Mount Pleasant started as a Mormon settlement permanently established in 1859 after an earlier attempt in 1852 was abandoned. And like other towns included on this list, Main Street's architecture is historic. See the Liberal Hall Museum and the Wasatch Academy, both dating to 1875, while the Mt. Pleasant Pioneer Museum and Relic Home offer the chance to step back in time. Get a snapshot of life pre- and post-Civil War America while learning about the role of Mormon settlers in the development of Utah. Meanwhile, Mount Pleasant hosts a range of town events throughout the year. Amongst these is the treasured Hub City Days centered around the 4th of July celebrations, with parades, rodeos, vendors, live entertainment, and fireworks displays.

Vernal, which also calls itself "Dinosaurland," is known for the many prehistoric fossils that have been excavated here, as well as the Cretaceous rock of the Book Cliffs, which form the southern rim of the basin. Visit Dinosaur National Monument and see an original dinosaur bone quarry, part of a monument that protects more than 800 paleontological sites. The sprawling Ashley National Forest is a short drive away. Covering an area of some 1.3 million acres, this outdoor playground is great for camping and exploration, with activities like hiking, cycling, rock climbing, and even fishing in some of the forest's lakes and rivers. These include the Green River and the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area.

Back in town, be sure to take a photo with Dinah the Pink Dinosaur, the 40-foot-tall roadside landmark built in 1958 and now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Dinah "Soar" Days in August give guests the chance to hop aboard a hot air balloon, and the spooky Trick or Treat Street arrives for Halloween, so it's peak season in Vernal any time of year.

Utah's Hidden Gems

There are at least six good reasons to take your time and explore Utah's small towns. Price and Vernal sit on top of fossil beds and rock art panels that predate any settlement in Utah by thousands of years, while Panguitch and Spring City preserve the brick and limestone record of the 1800s in buildings their residents still use. With seasonal festivals and a range of opportunities for outdoor recreation without the crowds of more well-known destinations, these towns are well worth a closer look in 2026.
