Florida's small towns, coastal communities, and island destinations offer specific, local attractions beyond the theme parks. Crystal River is the only place in the country where visitors can legally swim with wild manatees. Tarpon Springs has Greek sponge-diving heritage from the early 1900s. St. Augustine has the 17th-century Castillo de San Marcos, the oldest masonry fort in the continental US. Mount Dora has the lake. Islamorada has the Keys. These 11 are the notable options for 2026.

Lake Wales

Lake Wales sits in central Florida's lake country and is home to Spook Hill, a gravity hill optical illusion where cars parked at the base appear to roll uphill on their own. Bok Tower Gardens covers about 250 acres around a 205-foot Singing Tower, a Neo-Gothic and Art Deco structure built in 1929 with a 60-bell carillon that plays several times a day. The walking trails wind through shade trees and open lawns, with benches for picnickers. Lake Kissimmee State Park, about 15 miles east of town, runs to 5,930 acres with over 13 miles of trails, campsites, fishing access, and canoe trails across forest, floodplain, hammock, and prairie habitat.

Cocoa Beach is located on Florida's Atlantic coast and is known for its surf and the Westgate Cocoa Beach Pier, which extends about 800 feet over the ocean and includes shops, restaurants, and bars. Ron Jon Surf Shop is a local landmark, open 24 hours, and houses the Florida Surf Museum with exhibits on the state's surf history. Next door, the Florida Key Lime Pie Company sells pies, ice cream, candy, and Florida-themed gifts. Cape Canaveral is a few miles north, and the town is used for overnight stays during Kennedy Space Center launches.

Mount Dora

Mount Dora is located on a hill over Lake Dora in central Florida and features a walkable downtown district. The Mount Dora Village Market runs on Sundays and includes produce, herbs, crafts, and local vendors. The IceHouse Theatre, a community theater operating since 1948, stages plays, concerts, and comedies in a venue seating about 270. A few blocks away, Palm Island Park is an 8-acre lakeside preserve with a boardwalk and shaded walking trails along the edge of Lake Dora.

Anna Maria Island

Anna Maria Island is a seven-mile barrier island on Florida's Gulf Coast south of Tampa, with three small cities along its length: Anna Maria at the north end, Holmes Beach in the middle, and Bradenton Beach at the south. The island has a combined population of around 7,500. Bean Point, at the northern tip, is a less-developed beach with views across Tampa Bay to the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. Anna Maria Island Dolphin Tours operates two-hour eco-cruises from the main dock. The Kokonut Hut is a beachfront restaurant serving seafood, tacos, and cocktails.

St. Augustine

St. Augustine was founded in 1565 and is the oldest continuously inhabited European-established settlement in the continental US. The 17th-century Castillo de San Marcos is the main downtown site, built of coquina (a shell-based limestone) between 1672 and 1695 and still standing at the harbor. Cobblestone streets run through the colonial-era core with shops, restaurants, and preserved Spanish-period architecture. The 1874 St. Augustine Lighthouse overlooks the Matanzas River from Anastasia Island and includes a 219-step climb to the top and a maritime museum in the keeper's house. Crescent Beach is located a few miles south.

Dunedin

Dunedin is a Gulf Coast city with long-standing Scottish heritage, reflected in the annual Dunedin Highland Games. The games include bagpiping, whiskey tasting, clan gatherings, and Highland dancing over a weekend each spring. The downtown runs along Main Street with shops, restaurants, and the Dunedin Downtown Market on Fridays and Saturdays, which includes more than 60 vendors. Honeymoon Island State Park is located at the north end of town with four miles of Gulf beaches across 385 acres and ranks among Florida's most-visited state parks. Islamorada

Islamorada is a chain of small islands in the middle Florida Keys, branded as the "Village of Islands." Anne's Beach on Lower Matecumbe Key includes a 1,300-foot elevated boardwalk through mangroves, one of the longer beach-access walkways in the Keys. The Morada Way Arts & Cultural District features work by local and regional artists and hosts a Third Thursday art walk each month. Theater of the Sea, a marine park operating since 1946 and one of the oldest in the world, includes dolphin swims, sea lion shows, parrot shows, and guided marine tours.

Micanopy, established in 1821 in north-central Florida, is one of the state's oldest inland towns. The Micanopy Historic District preserves a cluster of 19th-century buildings, now housing antique shops including the Antique City Mall, where the inventory runs to furniture, jewelry, decor, and collectibles. Pearl Country Store & Barbecue is the local barbecue stop, serving pulled pork, ribs, brisket, and baked beans. Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park, just north of town, covers more than 21,000 acres of wetlands, prairie, and pine flatwoods with bison, alligators, wild horses, and a long list of bird species.

Destin

Destin is located on the Emerald Coast of the Florida Panhandle, where the Gulf of Mexico beaches take their white color from quartz sand transported from the Appalachians. Henderson Beach State Park protects 6,000 feet of shoreline and includes nature trails, campsites, and picnic areas. The Destin History & Fishing Museum covers the town's development from a small 1850s pioneer village to its current role as a charter-fishing hub. HarborWalk Village is the waterfront commercial district, with shops, restaurants, boat tours, and summer events.

Crystal River

Crystal River, on Florida's west coast about 75 miles north of Tampa, is the only place in the country where visitors can legally swim with wild manatees. The Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge, covering about 80 acres across multiple small islands in Kings Bay, was established specifically to protect the manatees that winter in the spring-fed water. Operators such as Fun 2 Dive run snorkel tours between November and March, when hundreds of manatees gather in the warmer springs. Fort Island Trail Park has a boardwalk, fishing access, and picnic facilities along the river's mouth.

Tarpon Springs

Tarpon Springs, on Florida's Gulf Coast north of Tampa, has one of the largest Greek-American populations per capita in the US, rooted in a sponge-diving industry Greek immigrants established here in the early 1900s. The Sponge Docks on Dodecanese Boulevard form the cultural center of town and include sponge vendors, Greek restaurants, and boat tours of the working fleet. Mykonos on the Sponge Docks serves lamb fricassee, grilled octopus, and other traditional Greek dishes in a taverna-style setting. Sunset Beach on the Gulf is the closest public sand.
