Primary school education is an important time in a child’s life and can largely influence their success during secondary school and higher education. Unfortunately, in large parts of the developing world, elementary school teachers are not suitably trained to serve as efficient teachers.
A Faulty System
Suriname, a small South American country, is known for its extensive areas of tropical rainforests. Unfortunately, the country is also known for its severe lack of qualified elementary school teachers, with just 6% of them possessing proper training for the job. Why are things so bad? Although education is widely available in Suriname, most of the schools are in an extremely poor condition. Many schools in rural areas do not possess toilet facilities, running water, or electricity. The government has initiated a national construction plan to combat these problems, but it will likely be a while before these changes have a lasting positive effect on elementary school students and their teachers. Given these abysmal conditions, becoming a teacher is not something that is highly sought-after. In fact, less than 1% of those in teacher training schools express a real desire to teach, highlighting a huge problem within the system: How can education improve when those training to educate have no interest in the teaching profession? The reason for this statistic is connected to the conditions mentioned above, as well as the poor pay and lack of available teaching materials. Ghana, a nation of West Africa’s Gulf of Guinea, has a more refined educational system than Suriname. However, it still struggles when compared to other regions of the world, and currently, only 52% of the nation’s elementary school teachers are trained. Most of the problem lies in the rural and remote areas, which rely the most on untrained teachers. Furthermore, just like in Suriname, teachers do not have access to proper educational tools. The high schooling fees and limited educational opportunity for females exacerbate the prior mentioned problems.
The Future of Education in the Developing World
Education is extremely vital in the early years of a child’s life and can have significant effects on their success down the road. Without proper simulation, they can experience stunted development, decreased confidence levels and have problems in being self-sufficient. Countries such as Suriname and Ghana thus require more funding and government attention. The necessary means and incentives need to be provided to the elementary schools to help improve the educational system as a whole. In the absence of efforts to improve the conditions of the schools in areas of the developing world, the poorer, rural areas continue to rely on elementary school teachers who lack the necessary motivation and training to educate the young minds. A lack of training means a lack of proper education, and in combination with poor school conditions and supplies observed in areas such as Suriname and Ghana, these regions continue to have high drop-out rates for students.
