Alabama was admitted into the Union on December 14, 1819 becoming our Nation's 22nd State. Nicknamed the "Yellowhammer State," Alabama's quarter features an image of Helen Keller with her name in English and in a reduced-size version of braille. The Alabama coin is the first U.S. circulating coin to feature braille.
Gracing the sides of the design are an Alabama long leaf pine branch and magnolias. It bears the inscription "Spirit of Courage" on a banner underlining the center image. Additional details
