Hot Springs, Arkansas

The Best Towns to Retire In The United States Near a State Park

The cruelest thing about a great state park is distance. A red-rock trail or a waterfall 90 minutes away gets visited twice a year, photographed, and forgotten; the same trail 15 minutes from the front door becomes a Tuesday-morning habit that outlasts a knee replacement.

For an American retiree, proximity is the whole game, and a handful of towns have quietly won it. In St. George, Utah, the paved trails of Snow Canyon State Park sit 15 minutes from downtown, and in Hot Springs, Arkansas, a typical house runs about $243,000 while three state parks cost nothing to enter. Arkansas and Tennessee charge nothing at the gate, and Delaware sells residents 65 and older a lifetime park pass for $150. The ten towns here are the rare places where the best park of your life is also the closest.

Sequim, Washington

Every July, more than 200 vendors set up in Carrie Blake Community Park for Lavender Weekend, which is free to enter, and the lavender farms around town, more than 15 of them, open their rows. Carrie Blake Park sits on the Olympic Discovery Trail, and walkers and cyclists can follow the trail east to Sequim Bay State Park, a 14-minute drive on Highway 101. Inside the park, a one-mile loop follows a creek down to the water over a plank bridge and a covered bridge, then climbs back up through ferns. The water inside the sand spits is calm enough for kayaks and paddleboards.

Membership at the Shipley Center on East Hammond Street is $50 a year, and Wednesday bridge there costs members $3 a game. The class schedule runs to hula and ukulele, and day trips leave on the center's 26-passenger bus. Housing aimed at retirees includes independent-living apartments at The Fifth Avenue on West Hendrickson Road and Parkwood, a 55-and-older manufactured-home community on Highway 101, and the median Sequim home sold for about $475,000 in September 2026. Olympic Medical Center runs a walk-in clinic and a cancer center on its Sequim campus, and the main hospital is about half an hour away in Port Angeles.

St. George, Utah

July highs in St. George average about 102 degrees, so a summer day here starts early on the Whiptail Trail in Snow Canyon State Park, paved for three miles each way beside the park road and the only trail in the park fully accessible to people with disabilities. Utah residents 65 and older pay $10 a carload to get in. Later in the morning the 33 courts at the Little Valley Pickleball Complex are free to anyone when they're empty, and for $90 a year the Institute for Continued Learning at Utah Tech University opens more than 70 courses a semester to people 50 and up. In the afternoon, the water at Sand Hollow State Park, half an hour east, is in the 80s and warm enough for a slow paddle in a rented kayak. SunRiver St. George, a 55-and-older community on the south side of town, has its own 18-hole golf course and a 35,000-square-foot clubhouse, and homes there sold for a median of about $500,000 in September 2026. Intermountain St. George Regional Hospital is the major referral hospital for southern Utah. When the evening cools, Broadway musicals play in Tuacahn's outdoor amphitheater at the mouth of Padre Canyon, right next to Snow Canyon.

Oro Valley, Arizona

Members of the Tucson Amateur Astronomy Association bring their telescopes to Catalina State Park for star parties, and volunteers lead bird walks in a park where more than 150 species have been recorded. The park is under ten minutes from the middle of Oro Valley. The 2.3-mile Canyon Loop Trail crosses the usually dry Sutherland Wash and climbs to a grassy plateau of saguaros and mesquite facing the Santa Catalina Mountains. After a lookout with a memorial bench, about 90 railroad-tie steps lead down to cottonwood and ash along the wash. The easy one-mile Birding Trail loop suits the mornings when the knees are less cooperative.

Splendido, a life plan community for people 55 and older in Rancho Vistoso, has care through skilled nursing on one campus, and SaddleBrooke, an age-qualified community where the median age was 71.9 in the 2020 census, is about 23 minutes north. On Saturdays the Heirloom Farmers Market sets up about 30 stalls at Steam Pump Ranch, a town-owned ranch on Oracle Road, and between October and mid-April the hours shift later, to 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Oro Valley Hospital is in town, and the median sale price stood near $525,000 in September 2026 in a town SafeWise ranks as Arizona's third-safest city on its 2026 list.

Fredericksburg, Texas

At the Sauer-Beckmann Living History Farm inside LBJ State Park and Historic Site, rangers in period clothing tend the animals and cook the day's meals. The park is in Stonewall, under half an hour east of Fredericksburg, and it is free to enter. A short trail passes pastures where bison and longhorns graze. Back on Main Street, polka plays on five stages at the Marktplatz during Oktoberfest, the first weekend of October. Methodist Hospital Hill Country is about a mile from the Marktplatz. Woodland Cottages of Fredericksburg rents single-story cottages in a gated independent-living community on Friendship Lane, and Zillow put the typical Fredericksburg home value near $512,000 in September 2026.

For a harder morning than the farm, the Summit Trail at Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, about 35 minutes north, is a steep 0.8-mile climb up bare pink granite. Day passes there sell out on busy weekends, so buying ahead is wise, and Texans 65 and up get half off entry with a free Parklands Passport. Turning 65 also freezes the school-tax part of a Texas homestead bill, and the state has no income tax.

Hot Springs, Arkansas

A typical house in Hot Springs was worth about $243,000 in September 2026, less than half the Fredericksburg figure, and the savings go a long way at Lake Catherine State Park, half an hour from downtown. Its marina is the only full-service one on the lake, and between mid-March and the end of October a 21-foot pontoon rents there for $230 a day. Park interpreters lead morning boat cruises and an owl prowl, and the Falls Branch Trail makes a two-mile loop through pine and hardwood to a seasonal waterfall. Entry is free at all three Arkansas state parks within about 40 minutes of downtown.

Hot Springs Village, a gated community of roughly 16,000 people, mostly active adults and retirees, sits half an hour north of downtown with nine golf courses of its own, and its duplicate bridge club has more than 800 members. Country Club Village Retirement Community rents cottages and apartments on Malvern Avenue near National Park Medical Center, a 166-bed hospital with an emergency room, and Arkansas exempts Social Security and up to $6,000 of other retirement income per person for those 59 and a half or older. The farmers market on Orange Street is open every Saturday of the year, with live music under the pavilion.

Traverse City, Michigan

A summer week in Traverse City can begin on Wednesday morning at the Sara Hardy Farmers Market downtown, where more than 115 farmers sell over the season. In the afternoon, riders can take the paved TART Trail east to Traverse City State Park, and drivers make it there in about ten minutes. The park has a quarter mile of sandy beach on the East Arm of Grand Traverse Bay and a buoyed swimming area, and a free all-terrain track chair is available to borrow for anyone who needs help on the sand. In early July the National Cherry Festival puts on a free air show over West Grand Traverse Bay.

About 101 inches of snow falls in a typical winter, and the Senior Center that opened on East Front Street in February 2025 sits right on the bay, with an exercise room and pickleball courts. About 4,000 new members signed up after the doors opened, compared with 307 in all of 2024. Cordia at Grand Traverse Commons has independent and assisted living within walking distance of downtown, Munson Medical Center is a Level II trauma center and the referral hospital for much of northern Michigan, and Redfin's September 2026 median sale price was about $491,000.

Crossville, Tennessee

Byrd Lake is inside Cumberland Mountain State Park, about ten minutes south of the Crossville courthouse, and the paved Byrd Lake Trail along its shore works for wheelchairs and walkers. In season, rowboats and fishing boats with electric trolling motors rent from the dock, and the park has a lakeside restaurant for lunch. Ranger programs carry names like Learn to Churn. Many of the area's retirees live in Fairfield Glade, a resort and retirement community with five golf courses and almost 100 clubs, about half an hour from the park. Fair Park Senior Center in town has fiddle and banjo lessons for people 55 and older. Cumberland Medical Center is less than a mile from the courthouse. About $307,000 bought a typical Crossville house in September 2026, and Tennessee taxes neither Social Security nor pension income. The town is known as the Golf Capital of Tennessee, and Bear Trace, the Jack Nicklaus course inside the park, stays open all year.

Brevard, North Carolina

On summer evenings between late June and early August, the Brevard Music Center holds more than 80 public concerts on its wooded campus, with the biggest in the 1,800-seat open-air Whittington-Pfohl Auditorium. The 400-seat Parker Concert Hall opened in 2022, and concerts continue in the off-season, November through April. Over Memorial Day weekend, downtown streets have live music and crafts for the White Squirrel Festival.

DuPont State Recreational Forest, about 25 minutes east, has an easy 2.2-mile loop from the Hooker Falls lot that passes three waterfalls, including the 125-foot Triple Falls. Gorges State Park, a longer drive to the southwest, has a three-mile round trip to Rainbow Falls on the Horsepasture River. Independent and assisted living are both available at College Walk on North College Row, Transylvania Regional Hospital keeps a 24-hour emergency department, and the 28712 ZIP code's median sale was about $565,000 in September 2026. Weekday mornings at Silvermont Senior Center start with chair yoga and cornhole for residents 60 and older and end with a hot lunch.

Venice, Florida

Venice is known as the Shark Tooth Capital of the World, and the favorite hunting ground is Caspersen Beach, where fossil teeth wash up along the surf line. A rake and a sifter help, though sharp eyes are enough. Storm damage has closed the beach's access road and parking lots, so hunters walk in from the Brohard Beach lots.

The paved Legacy Trail heads north out of Venice and passes through Oscar Scherer State Park, a 15-minute drive away, where a bicycle gets in for $2 and a car for $5. Lake Osprey has freshwater swimming, and Florida scrub-jays, blue-and-gray birds found only in Florida, live in the park's scrub. They are easiest to spot early or late in the day.

Myakka River State Park, about 35 minutes northeast, has a canopy walkway 25 feet up in the trees, and from the Birdwalk on the Upper Myakka lakeshore, roseate spoonbills and wood storks are among the wading birds seen between October and April. Village on the Isle, a nonprofit retirement community less than half a mile from the Gulf, covers care through skilled nursing. On Saturdays the farmers market sets up in front of City Hall. A Venice home sold for a median of about $420,000 in September 2026, and Sarasota Memorial Hospital-Venice opened in 2021 with 110 private suites.

Lewes, Delaware

The Friends of Cape Henlopen keep a fleet of loaner bikes at the Seaside Nature Center, home to a 500-gallon touch tank, and the bikes cost nothing to borrow. Cape Henlopen State Park is a ten-minute drive from downtown Lewes, and the crushed-stone Junction and Breakwater Trail, about six miles long between Lewes and Rehoboth Beach, connects to it. The Gordons Pond Trail runs on crushed gravel and an elevated boardwalk beside a 900-acre saltwater lagoon, with waterfowl often in view. Delaware residents 65 and older can buy a lifetime park pass for $150, about the cost of three years of the regular $50 resident pass.

The Lewes Senior Activity Center schedules tai chi and line dancing, along with day trips such as a pontoon tour at Trap Pond State Park. Retirees here choose between The Moorings at Lewes, a continuing care community on Cadbury Circle, and Bay Crossing, an age-restricted neighborhood of 256 homes, and Beebe Healthcare's Lewes campus has 210 licensed beds. A median sale in the 19958 ZIP code ran about $605,000 in September 2026, and the Second Street shops downtown charge no sales tax, since Delaware has none. In April, 33,000 tulips planted by about 150 Lewes in Bloom volunteers come up around town, and the chamber's visitor center hands out a map to the planting sites.

The Tuesday Test

Hot Springs is the easiest on the budget, with a typical house near $243,000 and three state parks that cost nothing to enter, and the money saved buys a lot of pontoon days on Lake Catherine. Crossville comes close, with free Tennessee parks and a typical house near $307,000. Lewes and Sequim cost more, and they suit someone happy to leave the car at home, since a cyclist can pick up a trail in town and ride into Cape Henlopen or Sequim Bay State Park. July highs average about 102 degrees in St. George, which turns the Whiptail walk into a sunrise habit, while Sequim's July highs average about 70. Traverse City gets about 101 inches of snow, so its state park beach, free track chair and all, is strictly a summer outing. The park worth choosing is the one you would still visit on a Tuesday in February, when spoonbills are feeding along the Upper Myakka and Bear Trace at Cumberland Mountain is open for a round.
