Welcome to Burnt Corn, Alabama. The fun name is sure to get your attention, and the rich history makes this a fabulous historic landmark. This highly recognized community general store was built in 1891 and served the community for decades. The post office was located inside the store and served Burnt Corn until the late 1990s.

The upstairs of the building once served as the Burnt Corn Masonic Lodge, and it was the meeting place for the Methodists for several years. Despite community efforts to keep the post office operating from the general store, it was forced to close after generations of postmasters had established traditions that contributed to its legacy. While the store is not in operation, it has been preserved as a historical landmark.

The Sprott General Merchandise Store and Post Office served the agricultural community for over 100 years. This iconic rural hub is in Sprott, Alabama. This local gathering spot served as the general store and post office in its prime. This place made its claim to fame in 1941 when Walker Evans and James Agee published the powerful documentary on Alabama sharecroppers, “Let Us Now Praise Famous Men”, which included a photograph of the post office. This photograph is proudly displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and in the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC.

Harrison Brothers Hardware was founded in 1879 and has operated on Huntsville’s historic courthouse square since 1897, selling locally and regionally made arts, crafts, gifts, and more.
