The small log cabin was built in 1911 and was originally used as a hiker’s center and a clubhouse for the National Park Inn. Walking through the doors of this historic building feels nostalgic. Originally built in 1922, it was damaged by fire but quickly rebuilt in 2024 with the massive help of its community. Here, you’ll find a shared potbelly stove, a lovely porch to gather on, and a dedicated space for community news. Nordland General Store is known for local island favorites such as smoked salmon, fresh clams and oysters, and sun-dried vegetables. As with every general store, they carry everyday staples and sell locally made cheeses, milks, jams, and jellies, along with tools and other supplies. Swain’s General Store in Port Angeles is a wonderful stop before heading into Olympic National Park. Originally opened in 1957 by local logging truck operator Cliff Swain and his wife, Bee, the store began as a 7,000-square-foot shop selling military surplus, hardware, and fishing gear under the memorable slogan, “Tents, trinkets, tools, tackle, and trousers.” Today, Swain’s spans two expansive floors stocked with everything from hardware, paint, plumbing supplies, and housewares to fishing, hunting, camping, and hiking gear. The store also carries sporting goods, clothing and footwear for the whole family, toys, and even offers services like custom Letterman jacket embroidery and UPS shipping. With its incredible variety and old-fashioned charm, Swain’s remains a true one-stop shop and a classic American general store.

The Port Gamble General Store has served as the heart of daily life in this historic mill town since 1916. More than just a place to shop, it was where mill workers received their pay, business was conducted, and residents purchased everything from food and clothing to tools and household necessities. It remains a beloved gathering place for both locals and visitors exploring the Kitsap Peninsula. The store features thoughtfully curated gifts, local products, home décor, and a creative makers' nook stocked with games, puzzles, and craft supplies. Visitors can also enjoy the café’s fresh sandwiches, baked goods, coffee, and ice cream before heading upstairs to explore a small museum housing collections of shells, skeletons, and marine life, including the second-largest privately owned shell collection in the world.

Located at the picturesque ferry dock on Shaw Island is the family-owned Shaw General Store. Built in 1898, it is one of the oldest operating businesses in the San Juan Islands and in the entire state of Washington. This charming old-timey building still has its original fir flooring, as well as antique furnishings and Shaw Island memorabilia. Inside, you’ll find all the essentials, including fresh sandwiches, stocked groceries, and warm coffee. Grab a treat from their selection of Lopez Island Creamery ice cream and enjoy their outdoor seating with incredible views of the bay. They strive to support as many local vendors and artisans as possible, offering a variety of local products, including art, fresh sea salt, wine, and homegrown produce. They also sell camping supplies, town memorabilia, and Shaw Island apparel. Notably known for being one of the best marina-centered stores in the area, it even offers pump outs for boats down at the docks.

This 125-year-old store preserves its early 1900s historic feel, honoring its logging heritage with vintage décor and old equipment on display. It originally served as a drug store and soda fountain before becoming the Doty General Store and Post Office. Today, it works to preserve its treasured legacy and the important history of the former logging town with displays that include a vintage meat scale, antique milk cans, kerosene lanterns, and an old typewriter. Along with all of these treasured artifacts, historical photos line the walls, telling the story of this old general store. Cork boot nail marks are even visible in the original wood flooring, which has been carefully preserved over the years. Doty General Store is well known today for its Sunday Pastry Mornings. Be sure to get there early to enjoy a warm cinnamon bun, fresh-baked sourdough bread, or a variety of seasonal treats. During the summer, they also offer an array of delicious ice cream flavors in their homemade waffle cones.
