This Nevada Town Has The Most Walkable Downtown

Nevada is a land of sweeping, epic scenery. In the state’s southeastern corner, a more relaxing way of life can be uncovered. Tucked into a valley framed by cottonwood trees and rugged desert ridges, Caliente is the heart of Lincoln County and a refreshing change of pace. It’s a natural stop along the Great Basin Highway, putting you within reach of outdoor gems like Cathedral Gorge State Park and several other scenic parks nearby. Back in town, Caliente’s downtown streets are just waiting for you to explore its historic landmarks, discover local cafés, and learn about the town's railroad era entirely on foot, while nearby communities are just a short drive away.

Begin your downtown Caliente stroll near Spring Street, a few blocks past Main Street. Right along this area, you’ll find The Barrow Brew Co., a small coffee stand perfect for easing into the day. Pick up an espresso or iced latte and relax in one of the patio chairs, or take your drink to go and sip as you explore the surrounding streets.

From there, make your way toward Front Street on a five-minute walk to the Culverwell’s Ranch historical marker. This stop offers insight into how the town evolved from a ranch supplying nearby mining camps to a booming railroad hub. As a halfway point between Los Angeles and Salt Lake City, Caliente became the site of the Union Pacific Railroad in 1923. Afterward, continue your walk, passing Shady Motel, and stop for breakfast at Knotty Pine Restaurant & Lounge.

From there, you may catch a glimpse of the historic railroad depot across the tracks. Because there is no direct crossing, you'll need to head back down Front Street toward Spring Street and then turn onto Clover Street to reach it. The walk takes about 15 to 20 minutes, depending on your pace, but it's well worth the detour.

Clover Street begins as a quiet stretch before opening up to a small strip of local businesses, including a hardware store, a liquor store, and Side Track Restaurant, a great option to return to later for lunch.

Continue down the street until you arrive at the depot, once a lively hub for train passengers. While it no longer serves travelers, freight trains still pass by. The restored building now houses city offices, a library, and creative art spaces. Next door sits the Caliente Heritage Boxcar Museum, a vintage boxcar painted with a colorful mural. Inside, photographs, artifacts, and memorabilia provide more insight into the town’s railroad history.

After exploring the museum, stroll back down Clover Street to Side Track Restaurant (if you're not still full from breakfast). The menu offers everything from hearty burgers to homemade pizza. It also has a Prohibition-era theme, complete with a dance hall and speakeasy next door, which adds to its charm. Within the same area, The Slop Shop, an art gallery and consignment space, features artwork by local artists, while the Shamrock Pub is a neighborhood bar where you can stop for a drink, play pool, or order from the full-service deli inside.
