This Is The Friendliest Small Town in Rhode Island

Charlestown may be best known for its quiet beaches and wildlife refuges, but what makes this small Rhode Island town especially welcoming is the way it invites people to settle in and feel at home. Its friendly spirit shines in open spaces like Ninigret Park, where residents and visitors come together for picnics and festivals. The warmth also comes through in easygoing local stops like Beach Rose Cafe and the quirky Fantastic Umbrella Factory. Relaxed and outdoorsy, Charlestown offers the kind of coastal friendliness that makes visitors feel like locals.

Unlike many small New England towns, Charlestown doesn't have a historic downtown. Instead, it showcases its natural landscapes, water spaces, and wildlife as friendly green hubs for residents and visitors. The town's main community gathering space is Ninigret Park, a 227-acre park featuring a freshwater swimming pond, beach, bike track, tennis courts, and plenty of green space for picnicking. The park even showcases natural public art within its borders, home to two giant troll sculptures by Danish artist Thomas Dambo: Erik Rock and Greta Granite.

The park hosts many of the town's signature events, such as its mouth-watering Charlestown Seafood Festival and funky Rhythm & Roots Festival, held each Labor Day weekend. Ninigret Park is also home to the Frosty Drew Observatory & Science Center, which opens its Observatory Sky Theatre for free summer stargazing every Friday night, in addition to holding special events to celebrate other celestial happenings.

The Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge is a top spot for bird watching from the observation platform at Grassy Point, where over 250 bird species have been recorded. The refuge's Kettle Pond Visitor Center is a good starting point to scout out the trails, interpretive panels, and kiosks, and to learn about the wildlife that make their home in the refuge. View the wildlife from the 4 miles of nature trails, or from the water as you kayak or canoe through the waters around Ninigret Pond, the largest coastal salt pond in Rhode Island.

Visitors are welcome to bring their own kayak or canoe and launch right from the refuge. If you don't have a boat, local outfitters make it easy by letting you simply pick a body of water to paddle in and get Water Wanderers to deliver a kayak or paddleboard to you. If you're new to either sport, they will even show up for lessons, coaching sessions, or a guided tour.

Burlingame State Park is home to Watchaug Pond, a large freshwater pond, ideal for swimming, boating, and fishing. Landlubbers can follow the 8-mile John Vincent Gormley Trail around the pond, with their four-legged friend on a leash. Camp overnight in the Burlingame Campground next to the pond, which features 700 rustic campsites and 20 cabins, a boat ramp, a naturalist center, an arcade for the kids, and canoe rentals. Campers with RVs can camp at one of 75 spots on the Charlestown Breachway, near the popular golden sandy beach that overlooks Block Island Sound.

Eating, Drinking, and Shopping

While Charlestown doesn't have a large downtown dining scene, there are a few standout local favorites, mostly concentrated along Route 1 and Charlestown Beach Road. The Beach Rose Cafe is known for its homemade sourdough bagels, while Dave's Coffee serves up locally-roasted, handcrafted coffee. Stop by the cafe and buy some of Dave's merch, then pick up a 4-pack of Sweet Lemon Iced Coffee Shandy to enjoy on the beach. Seafood lovers can indulge in fresh lobster, clams, and shrimp at spots like The Cove and the Breachway Grill, or head over to the 1933 restored dining room and tavern, the Charlestown Rathskeller, for live music and a plate of signature truffle French fries.

Charlestown's shopping scene includes the Fantastic Umbrella Factory, an eclectic collection of shops on an old 1810 farmstead that sells everything you might imagine, including gardening supplies and old-timey candy, while chickens and an emu roam the grounds. The Charlestown Gallery showcases the photography, painting, and sculpture of Rhode Island artists and offers "Plein Aire" workshops.

The Charlestown Seafood Festival has become one of New England's most beloved seafood celebrations since its humble start in 1985 as a small one-day event with just seven vendors. Today, the three-day festival draws tens of thousands of visitors to Ninigret Park for a seafood-centered weekend where lobster, chowder, steamers, clam cakes, fish and chips, oysters, and fresh local seafood steal the show. Beyond the food, there are beer and wine tents, midway rides, fireworks, a classic car show, artisan vendors, and non-stop live music from multiple bands throughout the weekend of August 7 to 9, 2026. The Rhythm & Roots Festival combines three days of live Cajun, Zydeco, bluegrass, and many other genres of music with three nights of camping in Ninigret Park.

Charlestown's Friendly Coastal Spirit

Surrounded by salt ponds, wildlife refuges, and scenic parks, Charlestown is the perfect small town for nature lovers who enjoy kayaking, hiking, birdwatching, and camping. Community gathering places like Ninigret Park bring residents and visitors together through popular events such as the Charlestown Seafood Festival and the Rhythm & Roots Festival. Laid-back, calm, and full of character, Charlestown also offers friendly local cafés, seafood restaurants, and quirky shops, along with a relaxed coastal feel that makes visitors feel right at home.
