History & Culture

Founded in 1825, Bluffton originally served as a refuge from the Lowcountry's stifling heat, mosquitoes, and malaria. Its position between Savannah and Charleston soon transformed the retreat into a strategic commercial hub. Over the years, Bluffton’s history has seen it all. After being largely destroyed during the Civil War, Bluffton rebuilt in the 1880s, only to see its prosperity wane with the completion of the Coastal Highway (US 17). As the new highway rendered water travel obsolete, the town's prominence as a trade hub faded. Today, Bluffton provides access to the neighboring Hilton Head, and locals recognize it as a fantastic place to live year-round. Frequent local events and festivals ensure there is always something happening in the heart of the town.

Throughout the entire year, the town hosts a weekly farmers’ market on Thursdays, where farmers and food vendors come together to sell locally grown fruit, vegetables, plants, herbs, and flowers. The town also becomes quite lively in the summer, thanks to its Sunset Parties that take place between April and September. These celebrations bring together the community with live music, food, craft beer, and more. And perhaps most famously, the Historic Bluffton Arts and Seafood Festival arrives each October. This local classic features a juried fine arts show with over 100 artists alongside incredible cuisine from the area’s most noteworthy dining establishments.
