Nicest Small Towns To Visit Near Aurora

Aurora sits at the edge of a string of Colorado communities with friendly atmospheres and outdoor recreation. Golden is home to the Coors Brewery and the Colorado School of Mines. Morrison serves as a gateway to paleontological discoveries at Dinosaur Ridge and scenic hiking at Red Rocks. Roxborough Park is renowned for its 300-million-year-old sandstone formations. Golden

About 30 to 40 minutes west of Aurora is Golden, which offers visitors and residents access to outdoor recreation and is home to the Coors Brewery. The brewery runs tours that show how beer is made, along with historic photos from the early days of operations, beer cans with old logos, and memorabilia from the archives. Tastings of Coors products are available in the brewery lounge. A short drive away is the Golden History Museum and Park, a community history site with hands-on galleries, more than 15,000 historical objects, and a relaxing park outside the facility.

Next to Clear Creek is Parfet Park, the oldest park in the city and one of the most popular spots to enjoy a relaxing day, with benches, picnic tables, a slide, and easy access to the Clear Creek Trail. Another museum to visit in town is the Mines Museum of Earth Science on the Colorado School of Mines campus. The museum holds two Goodwill Moon rocks from the Apollo 17 mission and an extensive collection of minerals from throughout the state, with paid guided tours available for groups. The museum also hosts events, making for a fun time for friends and families.

Brighton

About 40 to 50 minutes north of Aurora is Brighton, a city with a rich agricultural history and outdoor recreation. A fun place to cool off during warmer months is the Oasis Family Aquatic Center, a local water park that replaced a community pool in 2011, with waterslides, water basketball, a lazy river, and a couple of pools for families to enjoy. Just north of Oasis is Benedict Park, known for a smooth skatepark designed for beginners through intermediates. It also has a disc golf course, grills for group barbecues, soccer fields, picnic tables, shelters, and an area for wildlife viewing.

On the other side of town is Lizzie's Axe Throwing, Pool, Darts, Arcade, and Bar, an amusement center with axe throwing, pool tables, dart boards, arcades, and a full-service bar for a night out. People can join leagues to make new friends, and the place also hosts parties and other events. The Armory Performance Center is a gem in town where people can enjoy plays, live theater, dance, music, and visual arts programs in a venue established in 1921.

Morrison

The town of Morrison is just under an hour from Aurora and is renowned for its natural wonders and lively downtown. A landmark in town is Red Rocks Park and Amphitheater, a geological feature that attracts nature enthusiasts for its rock formations and hiking trails, and music fans for the concerts it hosts. During concerts, lights illuminate the rocks while concertgoers experience one-of-a-kind shows. Just north of Red Rocks is Dinosaur Ridge, a 3.8-mile-long trail with 250 fossil tracks and a haven for dinosaur and nature enthusiasts. Tours are available with geologists, as well as self-guided, bus, and virtual options.

Within town is Red Rocks Beer Garden, a lively social space for those wanting flavorful food and beers before or after a concert at Red Rocks. About 40 to 45 minutes north of Aurora is Fort Lupton, a city with deep frontier history and a working downtown. The Coyote Creek Golf Course is an 18-hole championship course that offers golfers a tranquil yet challenging place to play. Visitors can enjoy the views of the Rocky Mountains in the distance, practice on the range, and relax in the clubhouse. Pearson Park is another pleasant place to soak in the Rocky Mountains, with picnic areas, walking trails, and baseball fields.

Further in town is the Fort Lupton Museum, where visitors can learn about the community's history and origins. The museum is housed in the original Fort Lupton Library, built in 1929, with exhibits featuring historical photographs and artifacts. Guided tours are available, and the museum preserves data and public information. Just north on Denver Avenue is Lucky Shot Sports Bar and Grill, where patrons can enjoy billiards, food, drinks, and a lively night out on the town.

Just west of Fort Lupton is Frederick, a town with a rich coal mining history and outdoor recreation options. On the northeastern end of town is the Frederick Recreation Area, a 130-acre park with a fitness court, the Milavec Reservoir, and well-maintained grounds. The park also has the Milavec Lake Loop, a 1.4-mile loop that is simple and good for a relaxing walk. A community event to attend in town is Miners Day, where the town honors its coal mining heritage. The event features food vendors, a parade, a burro race, contests, and an evening concert at Centennial Park.

A place to begin the day with a freshly made breakfast is Gabe's Cafe, a local restaurant serving meals like three-egg omelets, breakfast burritos, breakfast tacos, and pancake waffle combos. Gabe's Cafe also allows people to order burritos to go for those who want to enjoy their favorite locally crafted meals on the road.

Roxborough Park

The Roxborough Park area is renowned for its 300-million-year-old red sandstone formations, similar to Morrison, and its rich history. At the southern end of town is Roxborough State Park, more than 3,000 acres of land with numerous trails to explore, including the 6.6-mile, moderately challenging Carpenter Peak Trail, which offers views of red rock formations and wildlife. The park's bird checklist runs to over 145 species. Nearby, Arrowhead Golf Course is an 18-hole par-70 public course with views of the red sandstone and the Rocky Mountains. It is a quality course to play and can also host tournaments, weddings, and private events.

At the northern tip of the community is Saffron Indian Fusion Flair, where freshly made Indian cuisine includes Chicken Biryani, Tandoori Tikka, and Butter Chicken among the menu options. The interior of the restaurant is modern and cozy, with patrons enjoying the comfort of its contemporary flair.

Black Hawk

Just an hour west of Aurora is Black Hawk, a home-rule city that runs as the state's premier casino destination and carries Gold Rush history. The Monarch Casino Resort Spa is one of the casinos to visit in town, where guests can play slot machines, play blackjack, enjoy a spa, and attend meetings and events. Please gamble responsibly. On the northern outskirts of town, the Hidden Treasure Trailhead provides access to the Maryland Mountain trail system. One popular option is the 5.7-mile trail, which offers mountain scenery that leaves people speechless.

A place to enjoy a slice of pizza in town is Copper Kitchen Pizzeria, a local shop that opened in 2025 with a range of pizza options. JKQ BBQ, set in Crook's Palace, is another option, serving BBQ like ribs, wings, mac and cheese, and pulled pork in a saloon-like setting, inviting people to the Wild Wild West.
