9 Senior-Friendly Towns in Texas

Thinking about where in Texas to settle in for retirement, the state offers more options than the Hill Country and the major suburbs that get most of the attention. Fredericksburg sits an hour and a half west of Austin with a Pioneer Museum, a star-shaped fort, and a population around 12,000. DeCordova on Lake Granbury runs a country club for the golf and lake-access crowd. Vernon up near the Oklahoma line is the kind of place where everybody knows the local pharmacist by name. Housing costs run from under $100,000 in places like Vernon and Raymondville to mid-$500,000s in Fredericksburg. Here are nine senior-friendly small towns across the state.

Fredericksburg

Fredericksburg sits in the heart of the Hill Country with a population of about 12,000 and a recent median home value around $548,000. That number is on the higher end for a small Texas town, but the trade-off is access to the German-Texan heritage, the wine trail, and the National Museum of the Pacific War (anchored by the Admiral Nimitz home). The Pioneer Museum and old Fort Martin Scott cover the 19th-century history. Hill Country Memorial Hospital serves the area with a strong reputation, and the town's compact Main Street is walkable for routine errands.

DeCordova

DeCordova is a small lakefront community southwest of Dallas-Fort Worth on Lake Granbury. The DeCordova Bend Country Club is the centerpiece, with an 18-hole course and tennis facilities organized around the lake. Housing here runs around $370,000 on average, well below the DFW median, and most of the homes sit on or near the water. Granbury proper is a short drive for groceries, dining, and Lake Granbury Medical Center.

Lago Vista

Lago Vista sits along Lake Travis northwest of Austin. The town has multiple golf courses including Highland Lakes Golf Course and the well-regarded Lago Vista Golf Course, plus several public boat ramps and parks for water access. Pace Bend Park across the lake adds 1,500-plus acres for hiking and primitive camping. A home in Lago Vista runs around $425,000 on average. Ascension Seton Lago Vista Health Center handles primary care, with full hospital services available in Cedar Park and Austin.

Raymondville

Raymondville is a small Rio Grande Valley town of roughly 10,000 about an hour from the Mexican border. Around 12% of the population is over 65. Housing is the headline: the median home runs about $92,000, one of the lowest figures in the state for a town with full retail and medical services. Raymondville Country Club is the local social hub, and South Texas Health System Edinburg is within a 45-minute drive for hospital-level care.

Robstown

Robstown sits a short drive west of Corpus Christi, putting Padre Island National Seashore and the Gulf within easy reach. Nearly 30% of the 10,000 residents are seniors. Local favorites include Up In Smoke BBQ on the south end of town. Housing runs around $85,000, one of the most affordable on this list, and Robstown sits on the Christus Spohn hospital network through nearby Corpus Christi.

Vernon sits in north Texas not far from the Oklahoma border with a population around 10,000. The Red River Valley Museum on Cumberland Street covers regional and Comanche history. Wilbarger General Hospital handles emergencies and routine care in town. Housing runs just over $90,000 on average. US-287 runs through town for easy trips to Wichita Falls (about an hour east) for specialty appointments and bigger-box shopping.

Roma

Roma sits along the Rio Grande in Starr County, with cross-border ties that show up in the food and culture. The Roma Bluffs World Birding Center sits inside Roma's National Historic Landmark District (one of only a handful of border-town districts to hold that designation) and is a regional birding magnet. A home in Roma runs around $113,000. Starr County Memorial Hospital handles routine care, with larger systems in McAllen 50 miles east.

Sweetwater sits in west Texas about 40 miles west of Abilene. The Nolan County Coliseum hosts the World's Largest Rattlesnake Round-Up every March, drawing crowds from across the state. The Sweetwater Country Club Golf Course handles the slower-paced days. Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital serves the town and surrounding ranch country. A home here costs around $102,000.

Plainview is a larger town on the South Plains with a population around 21,000, large enough to support a four-year college (Wayland Baptist University) and a covered indoor aquatic center. Covenant Health Plainview handles full-service medical care including 24-hour emergency. Plainview Country Club is the local social hub. Housing runs around $114,000, with most homes on full-size lots and many on quieter side streets.

Where Texas Retirees Find Their Spot

The right small town depends on what you want most: lakefront access, low costs, walkable downtowns, or full hospital coverage. Fredericksburg costs more but delivers cultural density. Vernon and Raymondville come in under $100,000 with reliable local healthcare. Lago Vista and DeCordova put you on water for less than the Austin and DFW metros. Whatever the priority, the state has options that fit it.
