8 Tiny Off-Grid Towns In Western Australia

Eight towns, each running on one specific draw. Coral Bay and Exmouth share Ningaloo Reef and the whale shark season. Walpole has the karri and tingle forests of the south. Bridgetown sits on the Blackwood River; Margaret River, an hour southwest, runs the wineries and the wildflower bloom. Derby is the western start of the Gibb River Road, where King Sound tides rise and fall up to 12 metres a day. Toodyay sits on the Avon in the wheatbelt. Kojonup anchors a chunk of Noongar-settler history along the Albany Highway. None of them are close to the others.

Coral Bay

Coral Bay has roughly 245 residents and sits on the North West Cape in the state's Gascoyne region, right beside Ningaloo Reef. Ningaloo runs about 260 kilometres along the coast, the largest fringing reef in Australia and one of the largest in the world. The reef is one of the few places where you can swim with whale sharks (the season runs roughly March to August) and humpback whales (August to October).

Ningaloo Marine Interactions runs whale shark and manta ray swims plus snorkel trips through the coral gardens. Glass-bottomed catamarans cover Bill's Bay with views of rays and coral below. Paradise Beach handles the casual swim-and-picnic side. The Coral Bay Beach Walk runs along the coast for views back over the reef.

Walpole

Walpole is a small town on the south coast surrounded by the Walpole Wilderness, a 3,634-square-kilometre protected zone of karri and tingle eucalypts. The Walpole Wilderness Discovery Centre operates across three sites: the Valley of the Giants Tree Top Walk (a 600-metre elevated steel walkway 40 metres above the forest floor), Swarbrick (with its mirrored Steel Forest art installation), and Mount Frankland.

The Walpole-Nornalup Inlet is the easy paddle, with WOW Wilderness EcoCruise running narrated boat tours covering the karri and tingle forest from the water. The Mount Clare Summit Trail climbs through karri toward the coast. The Giant Tingle Tree, hollowed out enough to step inside, is the standard signpost stop on the highway loop.

Bridgetown

Bridgetown sits on the Blackwood River about 270 kilometres south of Perth and is locally known as Western Australia's winter capital. The Blues at Bridgetown festival every November turns the streets into open-air stages. The main street holds heritage buildings and cottage gardens.

The Brierley Jigsaw Gallery is the local oddity, with completed jigsaw puzzles displayed across the walls. Ooh La Lollipop is the long-running candy store, with traditional Australian "lollies" sold by the jar. The Blackwood River Walk runs an easy path from Blackwood River Park along the water, under tree cover most of the way.

Margaret River

Margaret River, the largest town on this list at roughly 7,500 residents, is a three-hour drive south of Perth. It is not strictly off-grid, but it is the staging point for most of the southwest's off-grid experiences. The Wadandi people have lived in the region for tens of thousands of years and continue to manage the river system through cultural and ecological practices today. The town is also one of Australia's premier wine regions, with Cape Mentelle and dozens of other estates open for tastings.

Whale season runs May to November, with humpbacks visible from coastal lookouts and on whale-watching boats. August to November adds the wildflower bloom, with the Wadandi Track (named for the traditional owners) the main walking route through karri and marri eucalypts toward the coast.

Kojonup

Kojonup sits along the Albany Highway in the Great Southern region with about 1,200 residents. The Kodja Place is the cultural anchor, covering Australian country life and Kojonup's Noongar-Aboriginal and settler histories through Voices, photographs, art, and artifacts.

The Australian Rose Maze winds through plantings tied to local stories. The Kojonup Military Barracks (one of the town's earliest surviving buildings, per the Western Australian Museum) hosts exhibits on local history.

Derby

Derby sits on King Sound near the mouth of the Fitzroy River in the Kimberley, with a population of around 3,200. King Sound has the largest tides in Australia, up to 12 metres of vertical movement between high and low. The town was developed in the late 1800s as a port and still functions as one. The Derby Jetty is the main vantage point to watch the tidal flats fill and drain through the day.

The Boab Prison Tree is a hollow tree on the outskirts that became part of late 19th-century colonial history; it has long been described as a place where Indigenous prisoners were held overnight during forced relocations, though more recent scholarship suggests its actual use was more limited than the popular story holds. The site remains a place to reflect on the violence of the colonial period in the Kimberley.

Derby is the western start of the Gibb River Road, the iconic 660-kilometre 4WD route across the Kimberley to Wyndham and Kununurra.

Toodyay

Toodyay sits on the Avon River in the wheatbelt, about 85 kilometres northeast of Perth. The town was officially known as Newcastle from 1860 to 1910 before reverting to its earlier name. Connor's Mill, a three-storey 1870s former steam-powered flour mill, is preserved as a heritage site with some machinery operated for demonstrations.

The Free Range Emu Farm is exactly what it sounds like, with emu flocks roaming open paddocks. For something less expected, Christmas 360 sells Christmas tree decorations year-round.

Exmouth

Exmouth sits on the tip of the North West Cape on Exmouth Gulf, with around 3,670 residents and Ningaloo Reef on its doorstep. The Ningaloo Centre handles the indoor side with aquariums and regional fossil exhibits. Stingrays and small sharks are commonly seen along the gulf shoreline.

Froth Craft Brewery serves locally caught seafood and house-made lager, with live music on rotation. Vlamingh Head Lighthouse, a short drive from town, is the standard sunset stop, with views of the red cliffs meeting the Indian Ocean.

Western Australia, On Its Own Terms

These eight towns introduce some of the most distinctive corners of the state. Coral Bay and Exmouth open up Ningaloo Reef. Walpole and Bridgetown anchor the southern karri country. Derby is the way into the Kimberley. Margaret River, while not tiny or off-grid in itself, is the launching point for the southwest's wine, whales, and wildflower seasons. Each one is a long drive from anywhere else, which is exactly the appeal.
