Whitefish

The landscape surrounding Whitefish is a beautiful range of hills and mountains creating a perpetual scenic background wherever you look, but those mountains are distant beauties. Whitefish's most appealing attractions sit closer to home, right in the heart of its downtown district.

Whitefish's downtown offers a variety of food and drink options, including fine dining experiences in the Firebrand Restaurant, located in the luxurious Firebrand Hotel, and local favorites like the Bulldog Saloon, a great venue for burgers and cocktails styled like a structure from the Wild West. If food is your focus, then plan your trip to Whitefish accordingly. The annual Whitefish Restaurant Week is a week of celebrating restaurants and chefs, encouraging visitors to try something new and unique to Whitefish like local crepes, sushi, and a plethora of baked goods.

Livingston

Downtown Livingston is a great destination for travelers looking to find something new, be it a new beer at a local brewery, a new favorite food at a restaurant, or some rare or unique item at any one of their one-of-a-kind boutiques and vintage stores. The Katabatic Brewing Company features a rotating tap of beers that visitors won't find anywhere else in Livingston, or maybe even all of Montana.

Bob's Outdoor is a family owned and operated clothing store that first opened its doors in 1946. Beyond the meals and shops, Livingston's downtown is a living, breathing art market thanks to displays at the Danforth Museum of Art, including the "Frame Garden" exhibit that showcases local artists, and many more galleries. With just a little exploration, there's always something new to discover and something memorable to take away from Livingston.

Lewistown

Lewistown is a malleable destination for travelers looking to simply pass through or those intending to stay a while. Lewistown's downtown district is emblematic of Montana's character and sense of community, with showcases that celebrate local artists and experts alongside events that honor Montana's heritage.

Every year, over 5,000 locals and tourists attend the Chokecherry Festival the first Saturday after Labor Day to enjoy the famous chokecherry fruit that ripens in August, just in time for the event. The Downtown Street Jam is a perfect celebration for the whole family and a great way to discover musicians and artists and try something new from local vendors, occurring every Wednesday throughout the summer. Located in the heart of town, built in the historic Central Feed Mercantile building, Big Spring Brewing Co. is the perfect way to sit back, relax, and complete any trip through Lewistown.

West Yellowstone

Located just west of the Madison River, West Yellowstone is a very small community surrounded by beautiful nature with ample opportunities to explore the outdoors across every season. The Museum of the Yellowstone is a must-visit location when venturing to West Yellowstone. The museum features exhibits about the creation of Yellowstone National Park in 1872, the development of the town's historic district which features Union Pacific Railroad structures, and much more.

The Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center is a great place for travelers of all ages, offering educational exhibits about local wildlife, of course highlighting bears and wolves. The Old Town Cafe is a family-owned local business serving great beers and signature American dishes like the "Old Town Burger." West Yellowstone may be small, but its community packs a lot into its downtown core.

Philipsburg

Philipsburg is an old mining town from 1867, and travelers can see that history on nearly every street corner, both in the structures preserved to make this a National Historic Business District, and in the establishments that honor that history and heritage in informative and strange ways.

The Montana Law Enforcement Museum, as its name suggests, preserves and presents the history of Montana law enforcement. Illume Gallery West is a prestigious fine art gallery featuring oil paintings, bronze sculpture, wildlife art, and landscapes from local and acclaimed Western artists. The Granite County Museum takes visitors to the past with exhibits and visuals that recreate what life was like in Montana over a century earlier. Visitors have so many ways to explore Philipsburg's history that they'll surely make lasting memories themselves.

Kalispell

The residents of Kalispell know that they live in a really special place in Montana. Kalispell is a great tourist destination, and many of the greatest attractions sit right in the heart of the city across its downtown district. Kalispell even offers several self-guided walking tours that will take guests through the historic downtown district. The Conrad Mansion Museum features history dating back over 130 years, and visitors can take educational tours through all 26 rooms available in this preserved structure.

Kalispell's downtown core features even more historic landmarks such as the Glacier Art Museum, built in a 125-year-old Carnegie Library now listed in the National Registry of Historic Places, featuring tours, exhibits, classes, and collections of over 2,500 artworks. There's no better way to end a day learning about the past than to sit and enjoy the present drinks offered at Bias Brewing and Waters Edge Winery.

Bigfork

Bigfork, despite its name, is a very small town, but its small population has only led to a tight-knit community that ensures all guests feel welcome and a part of their many celebrations throughout the year. Bigfork just celebrated its 125th Founder's Day Celebration in 2026, marking 125 years of history within Montana.

Bigfork hosts a plethora of entertaining events every season. Tourists will find the usual holiday festivities during Halloween and Christmas, but if they plan their trips accordingly, they'll also see Rumble in the Bay, one of the most anticipated car shows in Montana, as well as the Bigfork Festival of the Arts, hosting vendors who sell fine art, handmade crafts, and more, ensuring all travelers will leave Bigfork with something to remember the town by.

Anaconda

The towering Anaconda-Pintler hills are hard to miss, eclipsing the horizon and much of the surrounding landscape around Anaconda. While exploring those peaks can be a fun outdoor adventure, the small town of Anaconda has plenty of activities a little closer to home. The Copper Village Museum & Art is one such destination, located in downtown Anaconda, listed on the National Register of Historic Places and offering free admissions to see its art shows and rotating exhibits.

Anaconda hosts plenty of events throughout the year such as Art in Washoe Park, inviting nearly 100 local artists and vendors to the Washoe Park neighboring the two main streets. The Bighorn bottle shop and wine bar is a testament to Anaconda's resilience. The owners purchased the 1884 building and refurbished it into a thriving local business that is now one of the must-visit locations in Anaconda.

Montana Main Streets Worth Walking

Many main streets scattered through Montana are worth walking. Annual events, like a downtown music jam and Chokecherry Festival, throughout the year bring Lewistown residents and visitors together. Several museums spread the lessons of Montana's history in Philipsburg, taking guests back in time to explore the region a century before. These eight Montana downtown districts deserve attention and recognition, with events and attractions encouraging tourists to not simply pass through but to take their time and absorb all they have to offer.
