8 Best Towns In Delaware For Retirees

Delaware is an attractive state for retirees for many reasons, including state median home prices of about $345,000 as of March 2025 (per Zillow.com). According to the U.S. Census Bureau, those 65 and over make up almost 18% of the state's population. More reasons to retire to Delaware include the fact that Social Security benefits and the first $12,500 of pension income are not taxed on Delaware residents. There is also no state sales tax. If you are considering retiring in Delaware, check out these eight small towns, one of which just might end up being your ideal destination.

Wyoming

You might be surprised to find a small Delaware town named for a state that is much larger, but Wyoming, Delaware, is actually named after a local reverend in the 1800s who was from the town of Wyoming, Pennsylvania. Today, Wyoming, Delaware, is home to more than 1,800 people, 18% of whom are age 65 and up, per the U.S. Census. Zillow.com notes the median home value in Wyoming is $304,430, making it an affordable place to retire. What else draws retirees to Wyoming? Many enjoy its ample green spaces, found in places like Wyoming Park and Wyoming Lake. Others may opt to visit Fifer's Farm Store & Kitchen, a family-owned farm that sells seasonal produce and holds annual events. The fact that the state capital of Dover is only a few miles away is also attractive to many retirees who move to Wyoming.

Retirement home choices can be found in neighboring Dover, including independent living and assisted living options at Harmony at Kent and Brookdale Dover. The nearest hospital, Bayhealth Hospital Kent, is also in Dover, easily accessible should the need arise.

Georgetown

Median home values are a comfortable $344,845. The closest beach is about 10 minutes away by car, which entices many who decide to retire to Milford. Its location on the Mispillion River and the Mispillion Riverwalk are two more attractions to living in Milford.
