7 Nicest Small Towns In Switzerland

Switzerland brings to mind castle towns above deep blue lakes and Alpine views everywhere you look. Spiez draws visitors with the 1,000-year-old Spiez Castle and the turquoise marina beside Lake Thun, one of the prettiest spots in town for soaking up the scenery. In Lauterbrunnen, 72 waterfalls make for an unforgettable trip in the valley, especially when you add in the dramatic drop of Staubbach Falls. If you are planning a Euro 2026 trip, these Swiss towns deserve a place on your itinerary.

Grindelwald

No trip to Switzerland is complete without going up the mountains. In Grindelwald, you can take a gondola up to the Bernese Alps. In just 25 minutes, you can dine at the mountaintop restaurant, Berggasthaus First, before taking a walk to take some photos of the Wetterhorn, the Grindelwald Glacier, the Kleine Scheidegg, and more. If being at the ‘top of the world’ is not adventurous enough for you, you can head to Glacier Canyon, which is a twenty-minute walk from Grindelwald. When you get to the canyon, you can stroll along the elevated walkway 870 meters down the canyon. There is also the opportunity to canyon swing, which is essentially a 90-meter free fall above the canyon.

If you are all about the green meadows and alpine air that Switzerland is known for, take the Bachalpsee Lake hike for a view you will never forget. And, another must-have experience that also more than delivers on views is visiting Jungfraujoch or the ‘Top of Europe.’ Taking the cogwheel train from Grindelwald will take you up the mountains to the highest railway station on the continent. Here, the views will take your breath away as you walk out onto the Aletsch Glacier and explore the Ice Palace.

Spiez

Like all nice Swiss towns, Spiez is breathtakingly beautiful. In fact, Spiez is one of the most picturesque towns in the entire country, looking like it was dropped out of the pages of an ancient fairytale. Spiez sits on the shore of the stunning Lake Thun and is twenty minutes away from another pretty town, Interlaken. The main attraction in town is the historic 1,000-year-old Spiez Castle. There is a flower park on the castle grounds as well as a spectacular Romanesque church. You can explore the park and church as well as the on-site museum. You can even drink excellent wine straight from the Spiez vineyards in the castle cellar. In the castle itself, you can go up into the castle tower for views of the surrounding landscape.

If you want a unique Spiez adventure, take the funicular railway to the top of the massive Niesen mountain. You can enjoy lunch at the restaurant at the top or go hiking. Should you prefer to stay on the ground, the marina beckons next to the Schloss Spiez. The marina is believed to be the most beautiful in the country, with clear turquoise water lined with healthy palm trees. You can admire the water from the marina itself or go on a leisurely boat tour.

Interlaken

A short drive away from Spiez, you can continue your journey through some of the nicest (and most beautiful) towns in Switzerland. Interlaken is the ultimate adventure destination, which means you can take in the incredible views while paragliding, hiking, and cable car riding. The paragliding adventure takes you to a grassy hill, where you start running fast and let the wind pick you up. You will soar above the town for around twenty minutes while looking down at the gorgeous landscape. If your nerves prevent you from paragliding, you can hike or take a cable car up to Harder Kulm. The historic car will take you more than 1,300 meters above sea level in fewer than ten minutes.

If you are a true adventure junkie, you will get a kick out of the fact that you can also go skydiving, rafting, and canyoneering. Or, you can get back to basics, hop on a bike, and ride to the pretty Giessbach Falls. This will whet your appetite for the next quintessential must-see town, Lauterbrunnen.

Lauterbrunnen

Lauterbrunnen is just fifteen minutes away from Interlaken and is known as the Valley of the 72 Waterfalls. This nickname is spot-on, since the town is home to 72 waterfalls, some of which are higher than a thousand feet. One of the most popular waterfalls is Staubbach Falls, which cascades down from the cliffs into the valley and is also one of the highest free-falling waterfalls on the continent. If you want to see the water and hike at the same time, take the challenging trail to Sprutz waterfall and be rewarded with unmatched views of the Alps.

Cowbells ring throughout the meadows in Lauterbrunnen, and the most beautiful flowers spring up during the summer. Once you have explored these, you can stroll through the pine tree forests before catching the bus to Trummelbach Falls. These subterranean glacial waterfalls include a lift inside a mountain that takes you to paths, tunnels, and stairs, all of which end up at the water.

Maienfeld

If the story of Heidi and her grandfather is what draws you to Switzerland, you will be delighted to know that you can visit this beloved character’s home, namely, Maienfeld. The main draw here is Heididorf, the ‘Heidi village’, which features the original 300-year-old Heidi House and a replica of her grandfather’s mountain hut. You can interact with the goats and chickens here, just like the fictional Heidi, and even visit the smallest post office in the country.

Beyond the Heidi lore, there is also the Heidi trail to explore. The trail is circular and will take you through town alleys and gorgeous vineyards where you can taste magnificent Pinot Noir. Remember to stop by Schloss Salenegg in the town center, which is one of Europe’s oldest wineries. And, to get back to Heidi, you can also visit the museum dedicated to Johanna Spyri before hiking the scenic slopes that surround Maienfeld.

Thun

Describing Thun as simply ‘nice’ is a disservice to this charming medieval town. Thun is known for Thun Castle, a 12th-century fortress with four white towers that offer panoramic views of the Eiger, Monch, and Jungfrau mountains. When you walk back from the castle, Old Town (Altstadt) awaits, where you can visit shops on two different tiers on Obere Hauptgasse. If you take a short walk from here, you will reach the Aare River to watch ‘river surfers’ tackle the standing waves at the historic wooden sluice bridges, the Obere and Untere Schleuse.

Thun is not only beautiful, but you can also take some time to relax within its limits. At Schadau Park, you will find the Thun Panorama, one of the world’s oldest surviving 360-degree cycloramas, which depicts Thun as it was in 1814. From the park, you can have a true fairytale experience when you board a paddle steamer and cruise across Lake Thun.

Montreux

When you arrive in sophisticated Montreux, which lies on the shores of Lake Geneva, your first stop should be the Chateau de Chillon, a moated fortress that sits on a rocky island offshore. Chillon Castle is Switzerland’s most visited historic monument, and you can experience the Dissecting/Dressing Chillon exhibition here as well as go on a guided tour between the castle’s fortifications and the castle itself.

For a history of a different kind, head to the Freddie Mercury Statue on the Place du Marché, which honors the Queen frontman who lived and recorded here. The nearby Queen: The Studio Experience museum allows you to view the original Mountain Studios. After this musical interlude, take a stroll along the Chemin Fleuri promenade to see the local sculptures. Or book your spot on the Rochers-de-Naye cogwheel train, which will take you up 2,042 meters for wonderful views of the lake and the French Alps.

The Pure Magic Of The Swiss Alps

Nearly every country in the world promotes itself as ‘uniquely special and magical’, but it is only in a country like Switzerland that these words seem to really ring true. The towns here are not only whimsically beautiful, but the country itself manages to offer both tranquility and adventure at the same time. You can white-knuckle it on a paraglider in Interlaken, or simply gaze out at the water in Spiez, glass of wine in hand. You can inhale literary history in Maienfeld or the famous mountain air in Lauterbrunnen. Either way, you will find these towns to be a genuine escape from humdrum everyday life, with a by-now-familiar’ chime of cowbells in the distance.
