6 Best Downtowns In Utah

Among the glistening lakes, national parks, and red stone landscapes, there are many must-visit small towns in Utah. The desert landscape, combined with streets lined with historic brick buildings and cozy diners, gives visitors a sense of the Old West. Some of Utah's small towns have particularly distinctive downtowns, with quirky shops, western movie landmarks, and backdrops of red canyons. The small-town character of these places is difficult to find in larger urban centers such as Salt Lake City. Here, we explore six small towns in Utah with downtowns worth adding to a travel list.

Springdale

Springdale is near Utah's famous Zion National Park, making it a popular destination for nature lovers. While the national park attracts many visitors to the area, Springdale's downtown has its own character and appeal. Zion Park Blvd is set against massive sandstone cliffs in shades of cream, pink, and red, creating a relaxed setting for local shops and cafes.

Deep Creek Coffee Co. is a common stop for visitors browsing downtown. Shops such as Zion Prospector offer collections of fossils, gems, and rocks. Although Springdale is a small town, it has several museums and galleries. The Zion Human History Museum features artifacts from the permanent collections of Zion National Park. After a day of shopping and sightseeing, Café Soleil is a convenient place to stop for a meal.

Kanab

If you have ever wanted to feel like you are walking onto the set of an old western movie, Kanab is the town to visit. The town is surrounded by red rock landscapes that shape much of the experience. From slot canyons to views of the Wave formation and White Pocket, the surrounding area offers many opportunities for exploration.

Kanab’s downtown reflects this setting and its film history. The town is known as Little Hollywood. Visitors can learn more about this history at the Little Hollywood Museum. The outdoor museum explores the area’s role in Wild West films and allows visitors to walk through actual movie sets.

Many shops and diners downtown reference this part of Kanab’s past and reflect an Old West style. Visitors interested in learning more about the town’s film history can also visit Kanab Movie Tours, which takes guests to well-known filming locations and original sets.

Moab

Moab's downtown combines historic character, shopping, and red rock scenery. Walking through the downtown area, there is a wide range of attractions to explore. The Moab Museum features exhibits focused on the town's history, including Indigenous peoples, early settlers, and the uranium mining boom.

After visiting the museum, Main Street offers a variety of shops selling outdoor gear and handmade crafts. Moab Made features locally produced goods that work well as souvenirs. Back of Beyond Books is a popular stop for visitors interested in a curated selection of literature.

After spending time downtown, visitors often stop for ice cream at places such as Moab Garage Co. or Crystal’s Cakes & Cones. It is a common way to cool off in Moab’s desert climate.

Panguitch

Panguitch is one of southwest Utah's most visited small towns due to its surrounding scenery and nearby parks. The downtown area features well-preserved brick buildings that reflect the town's pioneer history. These buildings are still in use today and house shops and restaurants such as the Panguitch Drug, Radio Shack, and Cowboy Store.

These businesses sell souvenirs, film, western wear, hats, horse supplies, and some camping equipment. While the downtown is generally quiet, it becomes more active during the summer months with events such as the Chicken Lights and Chrome Truck Show.

Some festivals, including the annual Quilt Walk Festival, highlight the town's history. In the winter of 1864-1865, after a severe winter storm, the men of Panguitch used quilts made by local women to travel for miles in search of help. During the Quilt Walk Festival, quilters gather to attend classes, visit vendors, and work on projects, bringing increased activity to the downtown area.

Salina

Salina offers access to nearby mountains, local history, and a walkable downtown. Main Street includes a mix of shops and diners that serve residents and visitors. Mom's Cafe, located on Main Street, is a well-known local spot for lunch and casual meals.

The café serves a range of homemade dishes, including hamburgers, chicken-fried steak, and chicken avocado sandwiches. For cold drinks, The Soda Barn offers slushies and other refreshments. One of the notable stops downtown is the Miss Mary Salina Historical Museum, which houses artifacts related to the town's past.

During the summer months, Salina hosts the Eyes to the Sky Balloon Festival. Main Street fills with vendors, music, and street food during the event, drawing visitors into the downtown area.

Tropic

Near Bryce Canyon National Park and the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, Tropic is often used as a starting point for exploring the surrounding area. Staying in the downtown area allows visitors to access local services and attractions on foot. The Bryce Canyon Inn sits in the center of town and includes lodging, a restaurant, and a coffee shop.

Tropic also has a small but notable local history. The Tropic Heritage Center Museum displays artifacts and photographs that document the town’s development over time. After visiting the museum, Route 12 Grill offers a dining option downtown, with seasonal menus that feature seasonal specials.
