10 Romantic Small Towns In The Finger Lakes For A 3-Day Weekend

Romance comes easily in the Finger Lakes. A waterfall hike in Watkins Glen can end with dinner on Seneca Lake. A castle in Geneva offers couples massages, and a historic inn in Aurora sits right on Cayuga Lake. Glassblowing in Corning and a theater night in Naples add even more ways to spend time together. These ten small towns each pack enough into a few blocks to fill a long weekend for two.

Watkins Glen

Nineteen waterfalls line the Gorge Trail at Watkins Glen State Park, where the path climbs more than 800 stone steps, passes behind cascades, and crosses arched bridges above the creek. It makes a good first-day adventure before settling into the Watkins Glen Harbor Hotel, a four-season resort with views over Seneca Lake. The hotel's Blue Pointe Grille serves lakeside dinners, and the Coldwater Bar is just steps from the room for a nightcap. On another day, drive out to Lakewood Vineyards for a private tour and tasting among the vines above the lake.

Skaneateles

Locals pronounce it "Skinny-atlas," and the lake that shares the village's name is so clean that the city of Syracuse still draws its unfiltered drinking water from it. Mid-Lakes Navigation runs sightseeing cruises, dining cruises, and private charters on that clear water. Couples can choose between two spa resorts, Mirbeau Inn & Spa on Route 20 and the newer Skaneateles Fields Resort & Spa, which opened in 2025 on a 100-acre property north of the village. Back downtown, browse shops like The Local Branch and Emma + James, then stop at Patisserie for French pastries. Finish with a toast at Anyela's Vineyards.

Penn Yan

Penn Yan takes its name from the Pennsylvanians and Yankees who settled the area, and it sits at the north end of Keuka Lake. Instead of a big resort, couples can book one of the five suites at The Laurentide Inn, a bed-and-breakfast on Main Street known for its breakfasts. Downtown's shops, restaurants, and historic storefronts make for an easy afternoon stroll. Keuka Spring Vineyards adds tours, tastings, and live music on most weekends, while Abandon Brewing Co. pours beers made with locally grown ingredients.

Geneva

Two historic lakefront estates give Geneva, at the north end of Seneca Lake, its romantic edge. Geneva on the Lake is an Italian Renaissance-style villa from the early 20th century, while Belhurst Castle dates to the late 1880s and offers a Romantic Retreat couples massage package at its spa. For dinner, Ports Café pairs fine dining with a relaxed setting and views over the lake. Wine lovers can book a custom wine, beer, or cheese tour with FitzGerald Brothers Finger Lakes Winery Tours, or head to 3 Brothers Winery on their own.

Aurora

The historic district of Aurora, which covers much of this small village on the eastern shore of Cayuga Lake, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Inns of Aurora Resort & Spa spreads across several restored historic buildings, and its spa menu is built for a slow, restorative day. Next door, The Village Market serves breakfast and coffee alongside locally made snacks and crafts. A short drive away, Long Point Winery offers tastings with wide views across Cayuga Lake.

Corning

Glass is the reason most couples come to Corning. The Corning Museum of Glass holds what it calls the world's largest glass collection, and its hot glass studio lets visitors try making a piece of their own. Afterward, wander the Gaffer District, the walkable downtown along Market Street, where shops and restaurants fill restored 19th-century buildings. Stay right on Market Street at the Gaffer Inn, or book a room at the nearby Radisson.

Auburn

Auburn's place in American history runs deep. Harriet Tubman and William Seward both made their homes here, and their houses are now open to the public as museums. The city sits at the north end of Owasco Lake, which gives a long weekend here a waterfront setting. The Inn at the Finger Lakes offers simple accommodations in town, while the more intimate Springside Inn has seven guest rooms closer to the water. Check the Auburn Public Theater schedule for a date-night performance, and set aside a day for tastings at the family-owned CJS Vineyards.

Naples

Naples sits in the hills just south of Canandaigua Lake, with Naples Creek running through the village on its way to the lake. The rural setting suits a quiet country weekend. The historic Naples Hotel has rooms upstairs and its Tap Room gastropub downstairs. Spend an afternoon browsing the shops along Main Street, then catch a show at Bristol Valley Theater.

Ithaca

Ithaca may be a college town, but Cornell University gives couples plenty to do together, including the Cornell Botanic Gardens and the Johnson Museum of Art. Around 150 waterfalls tumble through the gorges within 10 miles of town. The tallest, Taughannock Falls, is about 10 miles north of downtown on the west side of Cayuga Lake. Stay at La Tourelle Inn & Spa, where the August Moon Spa and the La Tourelle Lounge's local food and drink mean there is little reason to leave.

Seneca Falls

Seneca Falls is best known as the site of the 1848 Women's Rights Convention, where the women's rights movement took shape. The village is also said to have inspired Bedford Falls in the 1946 film It's a Wonderful Life, a connection celebrated at the It's a Wonderful Life Museum and the annual It's a Wonderful Life Festival. The Gould Hotel on Fall Street makes a stylish base for the weekend. Just outside town, Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge offers quiet trails for a slower day together, and Montezuma Winery is only a couple of minutes from the refuge.

Long Weekends Built For Two

Each of these towns handles romance a little differently. Watkins Glen and Ithaca lean on waterfalls and gorges, while Geneva and Skaneateles invite couples to slow down at lakeside spas and historic estates. Corning and Seneca Falls fold history into the weekend, and Naples keeps things quiet in the hills. Choose the kind of weekend you want, and one of these towns will be ready for it.
