10 New York Towns Where Time Stands Still

New York State is filled with old river villages and railroad-era towns where historic streets and dramatic scenery can make time feel wonderfully suspended. The famous Boldt Castle and Singer Castle, located in Alexandria Bay, take visitors to another time, like relics of the past preserved for your viewing pleasure in the present. Tourists can visit the literal highs and lows of peaks and valleys in Lake Placid, journeying across the winter wonderland of Mirror Lake with the Adirondack High Peaks right next door. These 10 small towns in the state of New York have a unique effect on people, making time stand still as they stop to marvel at their wide variety of sights.

The legend of how Alexandria Bay came to be, with Manitou putting paradise into a bag that broke into a thousand pieces to create the Thousand Islands, is quite fantastical. The Thousand Islands, real as they are, still evoke feelings of stepping into a fantasy world.

Visitors can tour wineries, distilleries, and museums, and take boat tours across the bay to see sights like Boldt Castle, Singer Castle, and the famous Rock Island Lighthouse. Boldt was once an abandoned castle that has since been restored and preserved into the desirable castle destination it is today, evoking a romantic, medieval past right in the heart of New York State.

Lake Placid

In the late 1800s, the Adirondack region soared in popularity, becoming a desired vacation spot for travelers looking to escape the heat of the South. Today, it remains a must-see destination for its history, once hosting both the 1932 and the 1980 Olympic Winter Games, and modern attractions. Lake Placid encourages its visitors to lace up their skates and glide across the frozen Mirror Lake, with the towering Adirondack High Peaks as their backdrop. For those looking to stay warm, Main Street is the place to be, with plenty of theaters and art galleries, such as the Arts Center Lake Placid and The Curious Otter, displaying incredible wildlife paintings.

New Paltz

Founded about 330 years ago, New Paltz is rich with history, and thankfully, it does not take much to find it. The massive Mohonk Mountain House is one of the town's greatest historical landmarks, built in 1869. The resort is like a series of architectural tapestries woven together to create something truly unique.

Venturing down New Paltz’s Main Street, visitors will find an array of markets and art galleries leading them to the famous Carmine Liberta Bridge that stretches across the Wallkill River, offering a scenic view of colorful forests and farmlands beyond. Huguenot Street is the origin point of New Paltz and remains one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in the entire United States. The National Landmark District of Huguenot Street features stone houses dating back to the 1800s, like stepping back in time to a past that remains very present.

Geneva

The town of Geneva fully formed its own identity in 1872, and that storied history is visible on nearly every street corner. Belhurst Castle is a beautiful destination for weekend getaways and weddings, with grand ballrooms inside and a beautiful exterior overlooking Seneca Lake. The Kashong Conservation Area, offering 83 acres of trails, and Seneca Lake State Park are two of the best places in Geneva to hike, boat, or swim. Seneca Lake and its state park offer the best of both worlds: waterfront views with a lakefront trail.

No trip to Geneva, the “Lake Trout Capital of the World,” would be complete without participating in the National Lake Trout Derby, a tradition that began in 1964. Geneva’s South Main Street Historic District comprises over 140 buildings, some dating back to 1850, earning it a place on the National Register of Historic Places and making it the most beautiful strip in town.

Catskill

Art is the core of the village of Catskill. Like one large painting, visitors can feel the brush strokes on every block. Catskill's Main Street features Victorian storefronts, breweries, cideries, and restaurants, all leading to the Hudson River Skywalk, which offers the best view of the Hudson River Valley and is definitely one place visitors will want to have their cameras ready. One destination leads to another, and exploration is encouraged.

Thomas Cole National Historic Site honors the artist it is named after, who founded the Hudson River School of Art, and remains a pillar of Catskill history. Venturing beyond the town streets, outdoor enthusiasts have 480 acres of the Hudson's biggest swamp forest to explore in the RamsHorn-Livingston Sanctuary.

Bolton Landing

Since the end of the Civil War, Bolton Landing has been a must-see tourist destination in New York state as tourists from all across the country and beyond grew increasingly interested in Lake George and the Adirondacks.

The Bolton Historical Museum and the Sembrich are both museums built from former homes and churches, respectively, preserved as meticulously as the artifacts they now house. Kayaking down Lake George is a treat, but Bolton Landing offers so much more, including a summer farmers’ market or a stay at the legendary Sagamore Resort, undeniably the prettiest place to stay in Bolton Landing. Sagamore Resort sits on the shores of Lake George and looks as if it jumped from a movie screen, built over a century ago with few architectural details changed in all that time.

Cold Spring

Cold Spring is deeply rooted in American history, housing many structures that were deemed Registered Historic Places, such as the West Point Foundry, constructed to provide more jobs after the Civil War. In fact, nearly all of Cold Spring’s downtown area, called the Cold Spring Historic District, has been added to the National Register of Historic Places thanks to many preserved 19th-century buildings.

This Main Street, with its Colonial and Victorian architecture, is a charming, quiet place to spend a weekend, and a gateway to the Hudson Highlands State Park, housing around 8,000 acres of trails, forests, and rocky grasslands. Additionally, visitors can browse the Magazzino Italian Art gallery and lose themselves among the hundreds of displays.

Saranac Lake

Saranac Lake wants visitors to make their getaways their own, whether venturing in summer or winter. There is always something to do and some new part of the region to explore every season. Like many towns in New York state, the Adirondacks is an important part of the community, and tourists are encouraged to take the Love Your Adirondacks Pledge and adhere to Leave No Trace policies to keep places like the Adirondack Rail Trail clean.

Back in town, the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival brings locals and tourists together, while places like the Pendragon Theatre and the Adirondack Artists Guild Gallery show off local performers and artists. The Winter Carnival also houses the Ice Palace, which is exactly what it sounds like: a “fortress” constructed annually of ice, with the first dating back to 1898. It’s a mainstay for the event that makes Saranac Lake feel like a winter wonderland.

Ticonderoga

Ticonderoga loosely translates to “the place between two waters,” referencing the surrounding waters of Lake George and Lake Champlain. Ticonderoga is a gorgeous place inside and out, and visitors will find beauty in both its downtown district and the natural wonders that surround it. For the best hikes and scenic views, tourists cannot skip out on the Carillon Battlefield Hiking Trail, Black Point Beach, and the rock formations around it.

Ticonderoga’s highlight remains Fort Ticonderoga, a massive site of over 2,000 acres, with Mount Defiance, built atop an 853-foot-tall hill, overlooking the two lakes. Fort Ticonderoga opened its doors to tourists in 1909, with exhibits exploring 18th-century military artifacts and the art and weapons of the period. Time will indeed stand still as the fort transports visitors to the past.

Aurora

Like many towns in New York, Aurora holds so much American history, and learning about the past is as easy as visiting one of the many destinations added to the National Register of Historic Places, such as the E.B. Morgan House. Built in 1793, it served as the home of wealthy politician and businessman E.B. Morgan. Today, it operates as a bed-and-breakfast, offering beautiful rooms overlooking Lake Cayuga. Another historical attraction is the 1833 Kitchen & Bar located on Main Street. It is popular for its creative menus, historical associations and sweeping views of the Cayuga Lake. Aurora is the perfect place to spend a day with family and friends, and the hours will fly by as you marvel at the Victorian architecture or browse displays of ceramics and glassware by local artists.

Disregard Time In New York State

Many travelers create fleshed-out, meticulously crafted itineraries for their trips. While having a plan is important, these small towns in the state of New York encourage a little improvisation. Visitors should not plan every step in Catskill. They should let the Main Street guide them through art markets. They should traverse all 83 acres of Geneva’s parks without checking their watches. They should slowly cross the Carmine Liberta Bridge in New Paltz, and let time stand still or slip away entirely as they take in the scenic landscapes.
