From Beaufort, Cape Lookout National Seashore is an easy day trip, with wild sands, the lighthouse, shelling, ocean dips, and coastal picnics all within reach. Passenger ferries, including Island Express Ferry Service, leave the waterfront for Shackleford Banks and Cape Lookout, making it simple to piece together a full day without a car. If wild-horse viewing is high on the list, Shackleford Banks is the classic stop, with clear shallows and beachcombing as part of the same outing. Closer to town, Rachel Carson Reserve adds salt marsh creeks, tidal flats, shorebirds, and horses that are sometimes visible from offshore. During its seasonal run, the Olde Beaufort Farmers' Market brings regional vendors and musicians to Courthouse Square.

When open, the beach and water park offers a sandy swimming area, waterslides, picnic spots, and views across the reservoir. Lake Lure Tours is known for narrated cruises past coves, cliffs, and filming sites from Dirty Dancing. Nearby Chimney Rock State Park adds the Hickory Nut Falls Trail, which leads to a 404-foot waterfall when the route is open. For a gentler stop, the Lake Lure Flowering Bridge area and Morse Park provide garden paths, open space, and scenery near the reservoir and Rocky Broad River.
