European soccer, or football as the Europeans call it, is a sport followed by millions of people almost every day. Practically every country in Europe has its own league, and some of them are even branched down to several minor leagues. Best teams from each league compete in higher tiers of competition, like the UEFA Champions League or the European League and can be crowned champions of Europe. Here are the top 5 current most successful soccer clubs in Europe.

5. Juventus

Currently competing in the Italian Serie A, this soccer club is based in the city of Torino and has a very long and successful history. Known as the La Vecchia Signora, or The Old Lady, this club was founded in 1897 and has won 35 titles in the Italian soccer championship. They won two Champions League titles and three European League (formerly known as the UEFA Cup) trophies. In the current season that is midway through, they are sharing first place with another Italian soccer giant, Inter FC. They are definitely a favorite to win this season, with Cristiano Ronaldo, arguably the biggest star in the soccer world today, leading the attack.

Founded in 1900, the strongest team from Germany is definitely FC Bayern München. They are competing in the top tier of the German league, called the Bundesliga. Their home ground is located in Bayern, and the games are played in Allianz Arena, which is usually filled to the full capacity of 75,000 people every game. FC Bayern München has won an impressive five titles in the Champions League, and a staggering 29 titles in the Bundesliga. Currently, they are only third in the ongoing season. Still, they are only four points behind the leader with another half of the season yet to be played. Their most famous striker is definitely Robert Lewandowski, a striker from Poland. With Manuel Neuer protecting the goal, they are a serious contender for winning their 30th title in the German national championship.

3. Barcelona

This Spanish soccer giant founded 120 years ago plays their home games on one of the most famous stadiums in the world, called the Camp Nou. In this monumental soccer field, 99,354 fans enjoy the recognizable tiki-taka style of soccer played by FC Barcelona. They have won 26 La Liga titles, which is the name of the Spanish national championship. On their huge trophy list, they have added five Champions League titles and another four in the UEFA Cup. Undoubtedly, their most famous player is Leo Messi, the Argentinian striker who has scored a record 432 goals in the La Liga. FC Barcelona is sharing 1st place in their national championship together with Real Madrid. It is expected for those two clubs to have a very close race until the very end of the season, promising another exciting battle for the title.

Originally founded as St. Marks club in 1880 and renamed to Manchester City FC in 1894, this English soccer club is competing in the top tier of the national championship, called the Premier League. The club had won six titles in the national championship, with the most impressive one being in the 2017/2018 season when they reached 100 points mark in the league, for the first time in the Premier League history. Their current manager is Josep ‘’Pep’’ Guardiola, a Spanish expert who has already proved himself in both FC Barcelona and FC Bayern München, winning national and many other titles with both teams. This season they still have a shot of winning the UEFA Champions League, but winning the Premier League is going to be a hard task since Liverpool FC is already 14 points ahead. This team, however, can expect to be at the very top of European soccer with many talents like Rahim Sterling, Kevin de Bruyne, and Gabriel Jesus still not reaching their prime.

In 1897, this soccer club was founded in the city of Liverpool. The Reds, as the fans all around the world like to call them, play their home games at Anfield stadium. Every game is a special event for the fans there, and each game begins with the whole stadium singing the song called ‘’You’ll Never Walk Alone’’.

A long tradition, and numerous almost romantic stories surrounding the club and its most famous players, brought them 18 titles in the English national championship, and they were crowned as Champions League winners even 6 times. The last one happened just a year ago when they won the top European soccer exhibit under the manager Jürgen Klopp. This German expert can sure expect to grab some titles this year, one of them being the long-awaited Premier League title that had not happened since the season of 1989/1990. Liverpool FC is currently populated with some of the best soccer players in the world, Virgil van Dijk, Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, and Dejan Lovren,  to name just a few.
