Indiana's smaller communities reach north to the shoreline of Lake Michigan and south into the trees of the Hoosier National Forest. Batesville

Batesville gives newcomers a variety of employers to get involved with and a thriving outdoor arts and crafts scene to get invested in once established. Crawfordsville pairs a fresh start with a dash of college-town energy. The local median home cost is reported to be $231,178 by Zillow as of August 2026. That figure is low for a college town.

Despite its name, Wabash College is not in the city of Wabash, Indiana, west of Fort Wayne. The college is in more central Crawfordsville. Founded in 1832, Wabash College is a liberal arts college for men seeking a Bachelor of Arts degree. Its large activities calendar and a student body drawn from 31 US states and 28 foreign countries contribute to an open and welcoming atmosphere for newcomers of all backgrounds.

Auburn

Dubbed the "Home of the Classics," Auburn has always been about moving fast, and the town's culture is steeped in more than a century of automotive history. Home to the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum, named for the Cord and Duesenberg classic car models that can be seen there, the town hosts an annual Auburn Cord Duesenberg Festival, filled with activities and auctions for the classic car enthusiast.

Bluffton

The Wabash River flows through downtown Bluffton, putting riverfront recreation at the front and center of job options and after-work recreation for newcomers. Huntington
