The Largest Clocks In The World

The largest clock face in the world is the Dokaae clock face at the top of the Makkah Royal Clock Tower in the Abraj Al-Bait complex in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, at 43 meters (141 feet) in diameter, about six times the diameter of the clock face on London's Elizabeth Tower (commonly miscalled "Big Ben," which is actually the name of the bell inside the tower). The Guinness record for the largest clock ever made of any kind was a temporary laser-and-stone installation by Jim Bowers and laser physicist Marcus Hertlein at the 2011 Burning Man festival in the Black Rock Desert, with a 3.28-kilometer (2.04-mile) diameter. The clocks below are the permanent fixtures, ranked by face diameter.

The Abraj Al-Bait is a seven-tower complex of hotels and apartments next to the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. The central tower, the Makkah Royal Clock Tower Hotel, rises to a height of 601 meters (1,972 feet) and is the world's fourth-tallest building, behind the Burj Khalifa, Merdeka 118, and Shanghai Tower. The four identical clock faces at the top each measure 43 meters in diameter (about six times the diameter of the clock faces on the Elizabeth Tower in London) and were certified by Guinness World Records on November 28, 2011. The clock was activated for a three-month trial on the first day of Ramadan in August 2010 and was fully operational by the building's completion in 2012. The faces are illuminated at night by approximately two million LED lights and are visible from up to 25 kilometers away. The clock was designed by German and Swiss specialists and built by the Saudi Binladin Group. The minute hand on each face is approximately 22 meters long.

Each of the hands weighs approximately 800 kilograms (1,763 pounds). The clock was built on roughly 23 acres of land donated by the Navin Fluorine company. As a botanical garden clock, the face exceeds the previous record-holder in this category (a Swiss floral clock) by about 2.2 meters.
