Red Cloud was named after a Lakota chief known for defeating the U.S. Army during Red Cloud’s War, one of the only strategic victories achieved by Native American forces against the U.S. government. The surrounding area historically belonged to the Pawnee people. Following the passage of the Homestead Act, settlers moved west into Nebraska Territory, and Red Cloud was established in 1871. The town later became a railway hub, with multiple passenger trains stopping daily at the Burlington Depot, which was once connected to downtown by a short horse-drawn streetcar line.

Throughout its history, Red Cloud has been home to several noteworthy Nebraskans, including Silas Garber, who served as governor of the state between 1875 and 1879, and author Willa Cather. Cather wrote numerous short stories and novels inspired by her life on the prairie, including O Pioneers! and My Ántonia. She maintained a strong connection to Red Cloud throughout her life and once told a friend she would rather be there than in Europe.

Downtown Red Cloud includes several locations tied to Willa Cather’s life. The Willa Cather Childhood Home was constructed in 1879, and her family lived there between 1884 and 1904. Many details in her writing reflect rooms in this house, including her grandmother’s room, the parlor, and the attic bedroom with its twin chimneys and distinctive wallpaper.

Another important location is the Cather Second Home, purchased by her parents in 1903. This larger residence includes a brick patio, sun porch, and guest rooms, and it now operates as a small inn. Visitors can also stop at the National Willa Cather Center, which opened in 2017. The center houses a museum, research center, bookstore, art gallery, and performing arts space inside the restored 1887 Moon Block building.

The center also interprets several sites connected to Cather’s work, including the Pavelka Farmstead in Webster County. This historic farm appears in My Ántonia. The Bohemian immigrant family who lived there, particularly Anna Pavelka, influenced the character of Ántonia Shimerda through her perseverance after her father’s death.
