Here are the Kansas towns that throw some of the state's most legendary Fourth of July celebrations.
Leavenworth

Kansas’ first city, Leavenworth, is hosting its annual Independence Day celebration on Thursday, July 4th. Admission is free to this one-day event at Merritt Lake, with the festivities beginning with live music at 6 pm While admission is free, purchases can be made for a variety of drinks and food, along with activities for the kids. The Salute to the Union is set for 8 pm, with the fireworks display beginning at dusk. Bring your comfy lawn chair or blanket for the ground and enjoy the show.
Leavenworth houses a downtown shopping district that stretches out for 28 blocks. There are hundreds of specialty shops that are family-owned and operated throughout the district, and a city trolley can easily transport you to and from your hotel. Tour the Chapel of the Veterans or peruse the C.W. Parker Carousel Museum that features multiple antique carousels, one being a wooden, hand-carved carousel made in 1913.
Wamego

Celebrate the nation’s 250th birthday in Wamego, once voted the ‘Best Fireworks Show in Kansas’, with a 30-minute sensory experience. Timed with the fireworks, guests can experience flame effects and light displays timed to the music, and view the celebration in a full 360-degree circle. While the fireworks are likely the star of the show, the event actually begins hours before the first lit wick.
An entire day awaits locals and visitors alike, with plenty of activities to ‘Celebrate Freedom in Wamego’. The state’s longest-running 4th of July parade will take to the streets, while a car show and carnival hold interest as well. Additionally, on the main stage before and after the fireworks display, Fort Riley’s First Infantry Division rock band will be keeping the party going.
Also, an entertaining stop in Wamego is the OZ Museum. Follow the yellow brick road, see behind-the-scenes photos, and view more than 20,000 artifacts from the classic Wizard of Oz novel and movie. Wamego City Park is another local favorite, featuring scenic ponds, picnic areas, walking paths, a playground, and the Wamego Historical Museum.

This exciting day starts at 7 pm with freestyle bullfighting, as professionals challenge themselves against the fast-paced animals. Hosted by the Frog Creek Fighting Bulls, no animals are harmed, and after the bulls, one can stay back for live music by Scott Wolverton until 11 pm.
History enthusiasts can also stop by the nearby Coffey County Historical Museum in Burlington, where exhibits cover early prairie settlement, local agriculture, and the region's railroad heritage.
