While Orlando's world-famous theme parks like Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, SeaWorld, and Legoland are often the first to come to mind, this bustling city in central Florida has much more to offer. Just over 80 miles from Tampa, it's perfect for a diverse day trip.

For those craving a true small-town Florida experience, you can't go wrong with charming Micanopy. Time seems to have stood still in this sleepy southern town filled with Oak trees dripping with Spanish moss. But while the town has a laid-back atmosphere, there's no shortage of interesting things to see and do. 

Start your day trip by strolling through downtown Micanopy, which is filled with unique eateries, coffee shops, and boutiques selling everything from high-end jewelry to local arts and crafts. Micanopy is known for its antique shops, such as Lost Ark Antiques, and the Micanopy Historical Society Museum, which is housed in a historic building and details the town's lively past. 

Spend an hour or two exploring the Tuscawilla Preserve, a large nature preserve featuring wetlands, mesic forests, and prairies. Visitors are welcome to walk along the preserve's trails and look for alligators, snakes, herons, egrets, and other types of native wildlife. 

Clearwater Beach

Just 25 miles from Tampa, Clearwater Beach, with its sparkling Gulf of Mexico water and white sand beaches, makes the perfect mini getaway. By day, the relaxing beach town has a dreamy island feel, but it lights up with bars, nightclubs, live music, and entertainment on the beach at night.

Spend the day strolling the sandy beach, stopping to take a walk out onto the 1,080-foot Pier 60, which hovers above the Gulf. The pier features telescopes and benches for viewing the stunning view, live entertainment, and covered pavilions. Considered both a fishing pier and a recreational park, Pier 60 also offers a snack bar and restrooms for convenience. 

No trip to Clearwater Beach would be complete without a stop at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, where you can see dolphins, sea turtles, and a variety of other rescued marine creatures. If you're adventurous, take a dolphin sightseeing cruise or spend a few hours on Captain Memo's Pirate Cruise. 

Silver Springs State Park

Located 100 miles from Tampa in the small town of Silver Springs, Silver Springs State Park is ideal for visitors who want to experience natural Florida in all its glory. A landmark destination since the 1870s, this 4,000-acre state park is known for its crystal clear springs, which stay cool even on the hottest of summer days.

While you're welcome to swim in the springs, another breathtaking way to explore the water is by taking a glass-bottomed boat ride. The boat offers stunning, up-close underwater views, as well as a look at Spanish and American artifacts and even submerged movie props. 

Explore the park's Silver River Museum and Environmental Education Center, and enjoy a meal in one of the onsite restaurants. You can also rent kayaks and canoes, hike the trails, and go birding. During the cool winter months, you may even share the waterways with wild West Indian manatees

Crystal River

If you've always dreamed of swimming with manatees or just viewing them in their natural habitat during the cooler winter months, Crystal River is the ideal day trip for you. Located just over 80 miles from Tampa, Crystal River has a laid-back Old Florida feel, eateries serving local cuisine, and a collection of galleries and boutiques to check out.

Known as the "Manatee Capital of the World," the city of Crystal River features the only national wildlife refuge dedicated to protecting the habitats of gentle marine mammals. Immerse yourself in culture by visiting one of the city's downtown art galleries or checking out the Coastal Heritage Museum, which features a comprehensive collection of Citrus County artifacts.
