8 Prettiest Main Streetscapes In Southern California

Southern California's Main Streets turn a downtown stroll into a full day of shopping, dining, and sightseeing. Browse the Spanish Revival storefronts of Old Town La Quinta, or order Californian charcuterie at Parque 1055 in Santa Paula. Seal Beach adds ocean views and the vintage Bay Theatre, while Fillmore's Main Street carries traces of Hollywood productions such as Seabiscuit. Tour El Segundo's beachside downtown and Barstow's Route 66 landmarks; these streets reveal the region's remarkable variety.

Santa Paula

Santa Paula is a little Southern California city built on the banks of the Santa Clara River, surrounded by citrus trees in the fertile Santa Clara River Valley. East and West Main Street make up the central parts of Santa Paula, where the expensive, shiny watches of jewelry store Joyeria America and the antique decor of Main Street Mercantile grace the downtown district. And the refinement of American restaurant Parque 1055, with its deep teal leather booth seats, martini list, and authentic Californian artichoke sitting atop wooden charcuterie boards, makes for an indulgent dinner. As does the French Cajun roots of Rabalais' Bistro, a few blocks down East Main Street, which also has a fantastic bakery selling sweet and savory treats like quiches and layer cakes.

Fillmore

Fillmore is a riverside railroad town with ties to Hollywood; Seabiscuit used the Fillmore & Western Railway for filming, but that operator's lease expired in 2021, and Sierra Northern Railway now runs the line. At 350 Main Street, the circa-1905 Craftsman-style Hinckley House forms part of the Fillmore Historical Museum and greets visitors as they enter the grounds. After exploring, perhaps have a picnic or take a short walk at the grassy square of Central Park by Fillmore City Hall, surrounded by the palm trees and railroad tracks, basking in the warm glow of the Southern California sun, with the Santa Clara River only a few blocks away.

El Segundo

California's small coastal city of El Segundo has a Main Street that stretches almost all the way from LAX to West El Segundo Boulevard, dappled with breweries, coffee shops, and the El Segundo Performing Arts Center, as part of El Segundo High School. Get tickets for the latest play here, while sitting in a 1927 Lombard Romanesque building with warm-toned bricks and a red terracotta roof. Sip a warm drink at one of the best coffee shops here at Blue Butterfly Coffee downtown, with its black awning, red brick facade, and blue and white butterfly logo, welcoming you into its social atmosphere. Or, the industrial image and cursive white font of the El Segundo Brewing Company may serve a better purpose for a livelier drinking atmosphere with limited food options.

Seal Beach

Orange County's seaside community and vacation spot of Seal Beach is home to Walt's Wharf, a longtime Main Street restaurant serving seafood in a casual coastal setting. Farther up the street, the vintage Bay Theatre displays its green-tiled Art Deco exterior; it opened as the Beach Theater in 1945 and received its current name following a 1946 redesign. At the bottom of the confluence of Main Street and Ocean Avenue, Eisenhower Park leads out to the Seal Beach Municipal Pier, where surfers and beachcombers rest and play on the golden sand in sunny Seal Beach. If the town lives up to its name, you might even see a seal or two down by the Seal Beach Municipal Pier.

Barstow

Far more inland than our previous location, the Mojave Desert town of Barstow is one of the many stops that make up the 2,448 miles of Route 66. On East Main Street, see one of the Barstow Route 66 Markers in town with its turquoise American classic car next to Barstow Station, and see if you can find all eight of them. Be sure to take a look at the Main Street Murals that provide a wonderful local art show to those who call this town home, visually presenting southwestern life in a myriad of series. And for a meal that takes you back in time, the 1950s-themed Roy's Cafe on East Main Street should do the trick, its light blue awning and red columns treating diners to traditional American roadside cuisine, ranging from burgers and onion rings to rich banana splits.

La Quinta

Best known as a luxury resort town in the Coachella Valley at the foot of the Santa Rosa Mountains, La Quinta embodies Southern California's hot desert climate. Downtown, La Quinta's Main Street pays homage to yesteryear with the vintage DSRT CLUB restaurant and its Spanish Revival architecture, with the bold green font of DSRT CLUB greeting you before you enter this upscale eatery. Just down Main Street by only a minute or so, Le Chateau, as part of Old Town La Quinta, sells a wardrobe of refinement with more of that white and brown Spanish Revival to feast your eyes on. And the Old Town La Quinta Certified Farmers Market is here also, a local staple on the cobblestone plaza, selling locally sourced produce and handmade goods.

Julian is a rural settlement in San Diego County in the rugged Cuyamaca Mountains, its downtown area brimming with apple-related goods and historic properties. The 1914 gold-and-brown Julian Town Hall & Visitor Center faces the retro American Miner's Diner on Main Street, serving sodas from their fountain with plenty of vintage memorabilia hung on the interior walls and placed in the dark green shelves. One block away, the Victorian Julian Gold Rush Hotel is the oldest hotel that still operates to this day in Southern California, with its paneled walls covering two floors, its crimson lining, and an American flag out front, inviting visitors to enter its homely abode. Diagonally across from the Julian Gold Rush Hotel is the family-run Julian Cider Mill at 2103 Main Street, delighting visitors with homemade apple cider, honey, and other affordable goods, keeping the Julian apple tradition strong in this mountain town.

Brawley

Brawley's Main Street, in California's agricultural region known as the Imperial Valley, has sparsely placed palm trees, including one outside El Chochi's Mariscos & Snacks, a bright orange restaurant serving Mexican dishes, seafood, and smoothies. The interestingly diamond-shaped apartment building of Ciudad Plaza is central for living, dining, and shopping, watching out over the corner of Main Street and South 8th Street. Meanwhile, further down Main Street, the Revival-style brown and beige stucco of Brawley City Hall is part of the five acres of landscaped Plaza Park, a key staple of Brawley for meeting civic responsibilities and offering minimal public recreation, as well as architectural styles that are pleasing to the eye.

Be Romanced by Southern California's Main Streets

The Romanesque, Italianate, and Spanish Revival architecture in some of Southern California's prettiest main streets lures in people to its restaurants, shopping centers, and landscaped parks. Whether it is the palm trees that reach for the sky or the way the sun bakes these towns as you peruse their shops, drink their cider, and spread out on their piers, these main streets suggest a relaxed ambiance, no matter if you are staying in a rustic 19th-century hotel or in a trendy, chic restaurant.
