7 Picture-Perfect Towns in the Finger Lakes

Scenery does most of the work across the Finger Lakes towns. Vineyard-covered hillsides rise above the lakes, brick storefronts line historic main streets, and gorges drop into amphitheater settings that haven't changed in centuries. Ithaca holds a network of gorges and waterfalls that earned the catchphrase "Ithaca is gorges" across New York. Seneca Falls and Naples cover the architecture and fall-foliage corners of the region. The seven Finger Lakes towns ahead each carry their own visual signature worth a long lookaround.

Canandaigua

Canandaigua sits at the north end of Canandaigua Lake with a downtown that centers the historic Finger Lakes Wine Country. The Sonnenberg Gardens and Mansion State Historic Park preserves one of the few remaining Gilded Age estates with a Victorian mansion of red Medina sandstone and nine formal gardens, each with its own design and planting plan.

The Granger Homestead and Carriage Museum, dating to 1816, holds more than 100 horse-drawn carriages and sleighs that cover the regional transportation history before automobiles took over. The New York Kitchen, formerly the New York Wine and Culinary Center, runs cooking classes, wine tastings, and dining around the state's food scene. The City Pier handles summer boat traffic on the lake and provides the swimming and picnicking spot that centers the town's lakefront.

Owego

Owego sits along the Susquehanna River just south of Ithaca, with a historic downtown of brick storefronts that has earned national recognition as one of America's standout small-town main streets. The Tioga County Courthouse in Second Empire style rises above the riverfront streetscape with its mansard roof and tall windows.

The Owego Riverwalk runs along the south bank of the Susquehanna for a quiet stroll with downtown views across the water. The annual Strawberry Festival in mid-June covers a parade, strawberry-themed food, live music, and crafts vendors that bring the community out for a long weekend. Hickories Park east of downtown handles the camping, picnicking, and water-recreation corner.

Naples

Naples sits at the south end of Canandaigua Lake, surrounded by vineyards and hills that turn red and gold every fall. Known locally as the Grape Pie Capital of the World, the town runs an annual Grape Festival every September during the harvest with grape pies, wine tastings, and live music. Local pie shops keep grape pies on the menu year-round.

Vineyards around Naples open for tastings and tours, with cool-climate varietals like Riesling and Chardonnay leading the regional wine scene alongside locally famous ice wines made from frozen grapes. The High Tor Wildlife Management Area covers more than 6,000 acres of forested hills for hiking, hunting, and wildlife observation east of town. Bristol Mountain Resort 10 miles north handles winter downhill skiing and summer mountain biking.

Hammondsport

Hammondsport sits at the southern tip of Y-shaped Keuka Lake with steep vineyard-covered hills rising directly above the village. Bully Hill Vineyards, Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery, and Keuka Lake Vineyards all sit within a short drive, giving Hammondsport a position as a hub of the Keuka Lake wine trail.

The Glenn H. Curtiss Museum covers the aviation pioneer who flew the first public flight in the United States and built early naval aircraft from his Hammondsport workshop in the early 20th century. The collection includes original aircraft, motorcycles, and engines that show how Curtiss helped shape aviation. Depot Park along the waterfront handles the swimming, picnicking, and boat-launching corner.

Ithaca

Ithaca sits at the south end of Cayuga Lake with the local catchphrase "Ithaca is gorges" capturing the network of waterfalls and rock-cut canyons that thread through and around the city. Taughannock Falls 10 miles north of downtown drops 215 feet into a natural amphitheater of Devonian-age rock, ranking among the tallest single-drop waterfalls east of the Rocky Mountains.

Cornell University, founded in 1865 and one of the eight Ivy League institutions, occupies the East Hill above downtown with its own gorges, the Cornell Botanic Gardens, and the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art. The Ithaca Farmers Market on Steamboat Landing runs weekends April through October with views across Cayuga Lake. Ithaca Commons in the heart of downtown holds locally owned shops, restaurants, and live music venues across pedestrian-only streets.

Seneca Falls

Seneca Falls earned a permanent place in American history when Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Mott, and other organizers held the first women's rights convention in the United States here in July 1848. The Declaration of Sentiments adopted at that convention launched what became the women's suffrage movement, which culminated in the Nineteenth Amendment seventy-two years later.

The Women's Rights National Historical Park downtown covers the Wesleyan Chapel where the convention was held and the home of Elizabeth Cady Stanton, with National Park Service interpretation across both sites. The National Women's Hall of Fame nearby honors women across American history. The Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge 10 minutes northeast covers more than 9,000 acres of wetlands and serves as a critical migratory stop along the Atlantic Flyway, with bald eagles, great blue herons, and waterfowl.

Trumansburg

Trumansburg sits 10 miles northwest of Ithaca with a downtown of preserved 19th-century buildings that runs north along Main Street through the village center. The Trumansburg Conservatory of Fine Arts occupies a Greek Revival structure originally built in 1851 as the Second Baptist Church and now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Ulysses Philomathic Library with its tall columned facade ranks among the village's signature buildings. Taughannock Falls State Park immediately south of the village handles the major regional outdoor attraction with hiking trails to the base of the falls and overlooks of the gorge. The Finger Lakes GrassRoots Festival of Music and Dance every July draws crowds for four days of folk, bluegrass, reggae, and electronic music across multiple stages.

Lake-Edge Towns Worth a Long Visit

The Finger Lakes region pairs natural setting with cultural depth in a way few other regions match. Canandaigua, Naples, and Hammondsport handle the wine country corner. Ithaca and Seneca Falls cover the university and women's rights history. Owego and Trumansburg deliver the riverside and village-life options. Pick the corner that matches the trip and the Finger Lakes deliver a long visit worth of food, history, and lake-edge towns to come back to.
