7 Coziest Mountain Towns In The Poconos

The Pocono Mountains of northeastern Pennsylvania have been luring visitors for well over a century. Spread across 2,400 beautiful square miles of the Appalachian Plateau, the region's combination of mountain scenery and, of course, cozy small towns, makes it an ideal getaway destination. From grand old lodges to lakeside villages dating back to the early 1800s, not to mention endless outdoor activities to pursue, these six Poconos towns deliver the kind of unhurried mountain experience that keeps visitors coming back year after year. Places like Lackawaxen, Tannersville, and Lake Harmony are among those offering quiet, recharging escapes for a range of travelers.

Lake Harmony

Named after the glacial lake at its center, the small community of Lake Harmony occupies the western edge of the Poconos where the mountains begin their gradual descent toward the Lehigh Valley. Formed by retreating glaciers, the lake is the town's focal point in the warmer months when kayakers and paddleboarders take to its calm waters. If fishing’s your thing, head to Captain Joe's Fishing for guided excursions to hook species like bass, walleye, or pickerel.

For those who want to explore on two feet (or two wheels), the Kidder Hike & Bike Trail connects downtown Lake Harmony with Big Boulder Lake for a scenic out-and-back route. Check out Piggy's Restaurant, a local favorite for breakfast, while Nick's Lake House Restaurant serves dinner with waterfront views that are hard to beat on a summer evening.

Its proximity to Hickory Run State Park is another great reason to visit this cozy mountain town. Set amidst 15,990 acres of forests and streams, the main attraction here is Boulder Field, a nearly 17-acre expanse of red sandstone and quartz boulders formed during the last Ice Age 20,000 years ago. Now a National Natural Landmark, it’s quite unlike anything else in the Poconos: flat, treeless, and a mess of jumbled rocks that stretches into the distance. More than 40 miles of hiking trails wind through the rest of the park, including the uniquely named Shades of Death Trail. This path winds through dense rhododendron thickets along Sand Spring Run for two miles, leading to several small waterfalls. In summer, Sand Spring Lake offers a sandy beach and safe swimming from late May through mid-September.

Tannersville

If Lake Harmony is the Poconos' quieter side, then Tannersville is its more energetic cousin. Dominated by Camelback Mountain, a year-round recreation area that packs more fun into its single slope than most other Poconos destinations, Tannersville is where you go for outdoor fun, whatever the weather. When the snow flies, Camelback’s 39 trails spread across 166 skiable acres are served by 16 lifts, including a high-speed six-person bubble lift. Its 42-lane snow tubing park is one of the largest in the country, and thanks to the resort's 100 percent snowmaking coverage, the season runs well into spring (night skiing is available).

And when the snow melts, the mountain becomes an adventure park complete with ziplines, a thrilling Mountain Coaster, UTV trail rides, and the Camelbeach Outdoor Waterpark, the largest in Pennsylvania. The indoor Aquatopia Indoor Waterpark keeps families entertained regardless of the weather. Other cozy Tannersville fun includes visiting Mountain View Vineyard. A unique combination of winery, distillery, and brewery, its large wraparound porch overlooks the vineyards and mountains, making it an ideal spot for some downtime. And for shoppers, the Pocono Premium Outlets features around 100 brand-name stores near town.

Bushkill

Located midway between the towns of Delaware Water Gap and Milford, Bushkill is home to the Poconos' best-known natural attraction: Bushkill Falls. Known since 1904 as the "Niagara of Pennsylvania," this series of eight waterfalls is fed by the headwaters of Bushkill Creek, which tumble spectacularly through 300 acres of dense forest toward the Delaware River.

The main falls plunge 100 feet over a cliff into a pretty pool, and a well-maintained network of wooden boardwalks, bridges, and stairways offers routes of varying difficulty. The easiest route, the Green Trail, is a 15-minute walk to the main falls, while the more challenging Red Trail is nearly two miles long and passes all eight of the Bushkill Falls cascades.

Bushkill also benefits from its position within the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, which stretches 40 miles along the Delaware River and offers canoeing, kayaking, and some of the best trout fishing in the region. For a cozy meal after a day on the trails, the nearby Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort is well worth the short drive. And for a great beer, the ShawneeCraft Brewing Company produces artisanal brews on-site, with its cozy River Room serving farm-to-table fare with views of the Delaware.

Stroudsburg

Set in the heart of Monroe County, Stroudsburg combines the architectural charm of a 19th-century market town with the energy of one of the Poconos’ liveliest downtowns. Its walkable Main Street is lined with original historic buildings that now house boutiques, galleries, cafes, and restaurants, giving the borough a cozy feel that’s easy to settle into for an afternoon or a weekend. The Monroe Farmers Market, held in Courthouse Square, is one of the town’s most popular gathering spots, while the Sherman Theater has long served as a centerpiece for live entertainment, drawing concertgoers from across the region. Official Pocono tourism materials also highlight Stroudsburg’s murals, museums, and arts scene, all of which add to the town’s appeal as a mountain getaway with a little extra cultural polish. :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}

Stroudsburg also makes an excellent base for exploring the surrounding countryside. Just outside town, Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm preserves a 19th-century Pennsylvania German farmstead where costumed interpreters, historic buildings, and seasonal events bring the area’s rural past to life. It’s the kind of place that feels especially rewarding in fall, when the fields and forested hills begin to turn color. Back in town, the pace picks up again with cozy bakeries, casual eateries, and longtime inns that make it easy to linger after a day of sightseeing. That balance of history, scenery, and downtown activity is exactly what makes Stroudsburg one of the Poconos’ most inviting communities.

Lackawaxen

Tucked away in the northeast corner of Pike County, where the Lackawaxen River meets the Delaware, Lackawaxen is undoubtedly one of the Poconos' most peaceful escapes. And thanks to two major landmarks along Scenic Drive, it's also one of the region's most historically significant places to visit. The first is the Zane Grey Museum, the former home of the celebrated cowboy novelist who lived here from 1905 to 1918. Now operated by the National Park Service, the museum features original furnishings, personal artifacts, rare photos, and early editions of Grey's novels.

Just downstream from the museum, Roebling's Delaware Aqueduct is the oldest wire suspension bridge in the United States. Built in 1847 by the same engineer who would later design the Brooklyn Bridge, the aqueduct originally carried barges using the Delaware and Hudson Canal over the Delaware River between Pennsylvania and New York. Walking across its wooden deck above the river is a Poconos must-do, especially if you include a stop at the Roebling Bridge Tollhouse on the New York side.

The area around Lackawaxen is also one of the best places in the Mid-Atlantic for winter bald eagle watching; you’ll likely see nesting pairs along both the Delaware and Lackawaxen rivers. The Mongaup Falls Reservoir viewing area on the New York side of the river is a particularly good spot to view these remarkable creatures. Just be sure to dress for the weather!

Lehighton

Set on the banks of the Lehigh River just seven miles west of Jim Thorpe, Lehighton has reinvented itself from a 19th-century industrial corridor into a base from which to explore the southern Poconos. Once a major coal shipping hub, silk and lace mills followed, powered by the river's strong current. While those industries have long since gone, the infrastructure they left behind has found new life as recreational assets. The best-known of these assets, the Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor (aka the D&L Trail), follows the route once taken by the canal and railroad through Lehighton and the neighboring borough of Weissport. Hikers and cyclists can pick up the trail in either town for a flat, scenic ride along the Lehigh River, with Jim Thorpe's equally cozy streets just a short pedal away.

The city of Lehighton has developed its own unique charm. It’s here you’ll find the wonderful Country Junction, the self-proclaimed "World's Largest General Store." Part old-fashioned emporium, part family entertainment center, it features a free petting zoo for the kids, an ice cream parlor, mini-bowling, and even escape rooms, all under one roof. For something a little more subdued and relaxed, Wine & More on 1st combines wines from a small Pine Grove family farm with rotating craft beers from Cave Brewing in a cozy space that's part tasting room, part community gathering spot.

Skytop

The tiny community of Skytop has been synonymous with luxury travel to the Poconos for nearly 100 years. In 1928, Skytop Lodge welcomed its first guests to its scenic wooded plateau setting near Canadensis. A masterwork of Dutch Colonial Revival architecture with grounds designed by the same landscape architects responsible for Central Park, this majestic stone building presides over its surrounds like an old English manor house.

Even if you don’t stay overnight, you’ll want to visit for a meal or a game of golf on its 18-hole championship course. There are also some 30 miles of private hiking trails to explore the resort’s sprawling 5,500 acres, as well as a 75-acre lake. Much of Skytop's appeal lies in the sheer variety of things to do here. The Adventure Center at Skytop Lodge operates a fun TreeTop Adventure Course with ziplines and aerial ropes, while in winter, skiing, snow tubing, and ice skating rule. For a mellow afternoon on Skytop Lake, the on-site Orvis shop can set you up for fly fishing, while horseback rides through the surrounding forest are available year-round through nearby Mountain Creek Riding Stable.

Cozy, Comfortable, and in the Poconos

One of the Mid-Atlantic’s most popular and scenic vacation destinations, the Poconos is where East Coasters go for mountain air. And the best of this region’s small communities add a tangible dose of coziness for visitors to soak up after all that outdoor fun. Whether you're watching sunsets from Camelback Mountain or simply sitting with a glass of local wine, these communities deliver the kind of cozy mountain experience you’ll not soon forget.
