6 Quietest Small Towns Near Omaha

Omaha has a lot going for it, but on a summer weekend its downtown and zoo can feel packed shoulder to shoulder. The alternative is to drive less than an hour in any direction. Within that radius sit six genuinely quiet Nebraska towns: the Missouri River villages of Nebraska City and Brownville, the Lewis-and-Clark confluence country around Plattsmouth, the Platte River state parks near Louisville, and the college hills of Peru. Each keeps a strong local character, and none is noisy. Here are six quiet small towns near Omaha worth the drive.

Nebraska City

Nebraska City sounds like a big, flashy place, but in reality, it is a small, peaceful town with fewer than 7,500 permanent residents. The town lies only 47 minutes away from Omaha and is very popular for weekend getaways, especially because it is located along the Missouri River. Leave early on a Friday to make the most of your weekend, including visiting the Arbor Lodge State Historical Park and Museum, where you can tour J. Sterling Morton’s mansion as well as the surrounding estate. The grounds include a log cabin, arboretum, carriage house, and several walking trails, and it is the place where Arbor Day began.

The kids will have a field day at Arbor Day Farm Tree Adventures, which features eleven treehouses, a 50-foot slide, and swinging bridges. And, do not miss out on a short trip to the Missouri River Basin Lewis and Clark Center. The center offers live re-enactments and hands-on exhibits. The exhibits include animals, birds, medicine, and theatre, and you can get up close to full-sized replicas of a buffalo, wolf, elk, and grizzly bear. You will need the full weekend to enjoy the attractions in Nebraska City, and if you are not staying with family, you have several great accommodation options. At the Lied Lodge at Arbor Day Farm, you can book a luxurious stay with beautiful views. For something even quieter and more serene, opt for Whispering Pines Bed & Breakfast, which offers country breakfasts and an on-site waterfall.

Plattsmouth

If you want a little more history in your weekend trip, Plattsmouth offers you just that and much more. Around 30 minutes away from Omaha, Plattsmouth’s streets are filled with historic architecture, and you can look out over the river as you explore downtown. There are 44 historic buildings to see along the main street, and you can visit the Cass County Historical Museum to discover when and how the town was settled. While you are out exploring, stop by River House Soda Fountain & Café for a mouthwatering burger and soda. Or drop in at Mom’s Café & Catering for the renowned homemade biscuits and gravy.

East of Plattsmouth, you will find Schilling Wildlife Management Area. The area is perfect for a quiet day of fishing or lazy picnicking on the river shore (Platte and Missouri Rivers). You can go hiking, watch wildlife, and visit the Confluence of the Platte and Missouri Rivers to follow in the footsteps of Lewis and Clark. There are no big hotels in Plattsmouth to use as a base for exploring while in town, but there are several B&Bs and vacation rentals around. They include the Hillside Motel in Bellevue, eleven miles away from town.

Blair

Blair is another small town weekend getaway option, just 35 minutes from Omaha. If you travel here in the summer, you and the whole family can spend a day swimming at Blair Pool or enjoying the splash pad at Generation Park. If you go during the fall, you can head to a local pumpkin patch to pick the perfect pumpkin to take home for Halloween. At Skinny Bones Pumpkin Patch, you will find several attractions and activities, including Tornado Alley, which is an indoor tornado simulator. There are also jump pillows, a Pumpkin Plunge, and JJ’s Corn Maze to explore.

At Blair City Park, there is ample space to relax while the children run around on the playground. When the sun sets, you can take a nice, long walk on the walking paths within the park. You can even take a couple of hours (or a day) to go kayaking and canoeing on the nearby Elkhorn River, or stay in town to enjoy the Missouri River. There are several places to stay for the weekend so you can fit in all the sights and activities, including the Super 8 by Wyndham. This is a basic stay but offers a great breakfast. If you want an on-site swimming pool, you will find an indoor one at the Holiday Inn Express.

Louisville

Louisville is a small Cass County town about 30 miles southwest of Omaha, sitting on the north bank of the Platte River. It is genuinely quiet, with a population of roughly 1,200 and a slow, small-downtown main street that has not chased suburban growth the way some closer towns have. For a weekend getaway with the loudest sounds coming from birdsong and the river, Louisville delivers.

The town's main draws are its two adjacent state parks. Louisville State Recreation Area wraps around a chain of sand-pit lakes and is popular for swimming, fishing, and tent and RV camping right along the water. Platte River State Park, just across the river, covers about 420 acres of woodlands and bluffs with cabins, hiking trails, and horseback riding. Together the two parks give Louisville more outdoor acreage than almost any town of its size near Omaha. Downtown, the Louisville Municipal Park and the handful of cafés and small shops on Main Street round out a quiet weekend; the Mahoney State Park complex is also close enough to use Louisville as a base.

Brownville

A little further out, around 1 hour’s drive, lies the tiny town of Brownville. At the 2020 census, there were only 142 permanent residents here, but that does not mean there is nothing to see or do. At the gorgeous River Inn Resort, you can have a fantastic dinner and cocktails, all while literally floating on the Missouri River. This B&B is on a boat and is just 4 minutes from downtown. This dreamy location is a hint of the wonderfulness to come at the Brownville Concert Series at the Brownville Concert Hall. The concert series brings world-class live performances right into this small town for residents and visitors to enjoy.

You will find more on-stage drama at the Brownville Village Theatre, the oldest repertory theatre in Nebraska. When you have had a brilliant night of showmanship and music, head out early the next morning to explore Brownville’s fourteen museums before sitting down to a hearty lunch of beef tips and gravy at The Lyceum.

Peru

Finally, if you want more nature adventures, the Steamboat Trace Trail awaits you in Peru. Peru is an hour from Omaha and just 10 miles from Brownville. The trail, which also works for biking and birding, runs for about 21 miles from Nebraska City through Peru to Brownville. It follows the route of an old railroad grade along the Missouri and passes former river landings and the site of the ghost town of St. Deroin.

Peru is home to the state’s first college, so more than 2,500 students pass through each year. Still, it has managed to maintain a serenity and quiet that keep visitors coming back. You can go fishing and wildlife watching at the Peru Bottoms Wildlife Management Area or boating on the Missouri River. If you visit during the first week of June, you can join Old Man River Days, which includes a 5K run and live entertainment. You may find it somewhat tough to find accommodation right inside Peru, but since the River Inn Resort is 10 minutes away, you can extend your stay long enough to explore both Peru and Brownville.
