6 Best Lakeside Towns in Virginia
Virginia has several major recreational lakes including Kerr Lake and Claytor Lake. The towns around them are part of what makes the trip. Hot air balloons fly over Clarksville in July and a courthouse square in Boydton looks straight out of a history textbook. The brick storefronts of Mineral still carry that old mining-town feel. The lakes pull in the boat traffic but the towns deliver the overnight side of the visit. These six handle both.
Clarksville

Along the southern shoreline of Kerr Lake, Clarksville in Mecklenburg County faces broad water, marinas, and quiet coves. The Virginia Lake Festival runs in July with hot air balloons, live music, and craft vendors along the streets near the shoreline. Cooper’s Landing Inn & Traveler’s Tavern operates inside a restored 19th-century building on Virginia Avenue. Occoneechee State Park includes Civilian Conservation Corps cabins and wooded trails leading to calm inlets used by paddlers. Public access areas around Kerr Lake include boat ramps, swimming spots, and fishing pull-offs along the shore.
Moneta

Moneta lies in Bedford County near the northeastern portion of Smith Mountain Lake, beneath the Blue Ridge foothills. Bridgewater Plaza is the main waterfront complex, with boat rentals, Mango’s Bar & Grill, and docks active during the summer boating season. Virginia Dare Cruises & Marina in Moneta operates sightseeing and specialty cruises on the lake. A short drive from town, Booker T. Washington National Monument preserves the farm where the educator was born into slavery and spent his early childhood. The site includes a reconstructed kitchen cabin, heritage-breed animals, and interpreters covering plantation life.
Mineral

Mineral in Louisa County connects a railroad-era center with roads leading to coves, marinas, and public access points around Lake Anna. Boydton

Boydton sits in Mecklenburg County a few minutes from Kerr Lake, also known locally as Buggs Island Lake. Boyd Tavern features Federal-style architecture from around 1790 and is used for exhibits and events. Nearby Occoneechee State Park includes cabin stays, forested trails, and views from a peninsula associated with the Occaneechi people.
