10 Best Lakeside Towns in Florida

Florida has more than 3 million acres of freshwater and about 7,700 named lakes, with standout names like Lake Dora and the vast Lake Okeechobee. Mount Dora, located in Lake County, is closely tied to Lake Dora and the Harris Chain of Lakes, with the lighthouse at Grantham Point Park standing out as one of its best-known landmarks and a symbol of its boating-centered identity. And in Winter Haven, the biggest draw is the Winter Haven Chain of Lakes, a connected system that makes boating and cruising the most fun and defining part of a visit. The nine lakeside towns below are the best in Florida for boat rides and sweeping water views.

Few small Florida towns mix lake views and polished charm as well as Mount Dora. Renninger’s Antique Center and Flea Market is one of the town’s biggest draws, with enough vintage finds and oddball collectibles to turn casual browsing into a full afternoon.

For a quieter side of town, Palm Island Park offers a scenic boardwalk through cypress and palms right along the water. The photo stop everyone remembers is Grantham Point Park, home to Mount Dora’s lighthouse and some of the prettiest views over Lake Dora. Art and design lovers should also carve out time for the Modernism Museum Mount Dora, which feels surprisingly distinctive for a town this size.

Tavares

Tavares has a playful edge that helps it stand out from other Florida lake towns, largely because it embraces its seaplane identity so fully. The biggest attraction is the Tavares Seaplane Base at Wooton Park, where watching planes land and lift off from Lake Dora turns an ordinary waterfront into something far more memorable. Families flock to the Tavares Splash Park, which adds an energetic, kid-friendly stop right by the lake. You can slow the pace with a walk along the Wooton Park waterfront and scenic pier, where marina views and open water give the area its easygoing appeal. If you catch the Monster Splash Seaplane Fly-In, the whole town feels even more lively and unusual.

Winter Haven

What makes Winter Haven fun is not just one pretty shoreline, but the fact that the city is wrapped around a whole chain of lakes. Boating or cruising on the Winter Haven Chain of Lakes is the experience that really gives the place its identity. The city’s most famous attraction is LEGOLAND Florida Resort, built on the old Cypress Gardens grounds and packed with family-friendly energy. Inside the park, the Cypress Gardens Botanical Gardens still provide one of the area’s most graceful and memorable corners, especially around the giant banyan tree. For something less theme-park driven, Sherman’s Antiques adds a fun stop full of vintage pieces and treasure-hunt appeal.

Clermont

Clermont feels different from many Florida lake towns because the hills give the scenery more shape, while Lake Minneola keeps the setting open and breezy. The most obvious place to start is Waterfront Park, where the beach, pier, trail access, and broad lake views all come together in one polished public space. Above town, the Florida Citrus Tower offers one of the classic panoramic looks at Clermont’s lakes and rolling terrain. If you want to stay active, the South Lake Trail shows off the area especially well on foot or by bike. A visit to Lake Louisa State Park rounds things out with paddling, hiking, and a more natural side of Central Florida.

Sebring

Sebring brings together lake scenery and a few attractions you would not expect to find in the same town. On the waterfront, City Pier Beach gives Lake Jackson a relaxed, easygoing focal point with sand, water views, and room to unwind. The town’s wild-card attraction is Sebring International Raceway, whose racing history gives the area a punch of energy that most lakeside places simply do not have. For a completely different mood, Highlands Hammock State Park delivers ancient oaks, elevated boardwalks, and some of the best old-Florida scenery in the region. The Sebring Downtown Historic District and Circle Park Drive add another memorable layer with Sebring’s unusual circular layout and historic setting.

Leesburg

Boaters tend to remember Leesburg because it opens onto the Harris Chain of Lakes, and that connection shapes much of the town’s appeal. The prettiest public spot is Venetian Gardens, where bridges, walking paths, fountains, and views across Lake Harris make the waterfront feel especially polished. Getting out on the Harris Chain of Lakes is the best way to understand the town, whether you are cruising, fishing, or simply enjoying the scenery from the water. Leesburg Heritage Museum is a worthwhile stop for local history inside a former railroad depot. Melon Patch Theatre gives the city one more named attraction with a long-running community arts presence.

Eustis

Eustis is not flashy, which is exactly why its lakefront charm lands so well. The town’s best-known gathering place is Ferran Park, where a historic bandshell, palm-lined paths, and open views over Lake Eustis create a classic small-town waterfront scene. Rather than rushing past the center of town, spend time at the Clifford House, a restored 1911 home that adds a more tangible sense of local character. The shoreline becomes even more inviting along the Eustis Lake Walk, an easy place to slow down and enjoy the breeze off the water. If you visit during GeorgeFest, Eustis shows a livelier side and feels more festive than its relaxed everyday pace suggests.

Inverness

For travelers who want a quieter kind of lake town, Inverness has a lot going for it. Liberty Park gives the town a scenic edge with open views across Lake Henderson and enough green space to make the waterfront feel central to the experience. The bigger outdoor draw is the Tsala Apopka Chain of Lakes, which brings boating, fishing, and paddling into the picture on a much larger scale. Inverness also benefits from the Withlacoochee State Trail, a standout route for walking and biking that adds another layer to the outdoor appeal. Nearby, Fort Cooper State Park introduces hiking, wildlife, and a distinctly old-Florida atmosphere that helps the area feel more memorable.

Okeechobee

Okeechobee is not the kind of place that tries to look polished, and that is part of what makes it appealing. The biggest draw is clearly Lake Okeechobee itself, especially for anglers who come here specifically for the lake’s legendary bass fishing. To really appreciate the scale of the water, the Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail offers huge views and a more dramatic sense of the landscape than you get from town streets alone. For a quieter stop, Okeechobee County Veteran’s Memorial Park gives visitors an easy place to enjoy the waterfront. The Okeechobee Main Street Historic District adds just enough local character and older storefront charm to keep the town from feeling like a simple launch point.

From seaplanes in Tavares to the vast open water of Lake Okeechobee, Florida’s lake towns offer far more variety than many travelers expect. Some lean into boardwalks and polished waterfront parks, while others stand out for fishing, boating, gardens, or old-Florida scenery. Whether you want a relaxed weekend by Lake Dora or a full day on the Winter Haven Chain of Lakes, these towns prove Florida’s freshwater side is well worth exploring
