The classic general store has a unique characteristic that has appealed to its visitors for years. The old-time charm can transport its patrons to a different place or time period with its allure, décor and products. These stores almost have a story to tell, and you can learn a lot about their history through one shopping trip. If you find yourself in the Evergreen State of Washington, stopping at one of these eight old-timey general stores can have that same nostalgic effect.

Since 1853 the Port Gamble General Store and Café has been serving its patrons. From millworkers to modern day adventurers, this charming and quirky store has everything one might need. Or want. After opening in 1853 the business relocated in 1916 and since then the historic building has been home to Port Gamble General Store and Café. Located in the town sharing the same name, the second floor of this general store houses a museum that includes the second largest privately owned shell museum in the world! Stop in and take a look at the collection while enjoying one of the 16 flavors of ice cream from the café. The general store, which now features an online version as well, specializes in apparel, gifts, holiday items and treasure gift boxes.

Nordland General Store

Located on Marrowstone Island, this cooperative general store was built by the community, for the community and strives to showcase local farmers, producers and makers. They have a goal to showcase as many native island products and merchandise as they can. Opened in 1922 this general store is sure to stock all the island favorites. Groceries, quick bites, bakery items, meats and cheeses, and unique items from local fabricators line the shelves. Stop in and pick up the essentials or just something to remember your time on Marrowstone Island.

Located in the heart of Mt. Rainier, the Longmire General store is open year-round and has the essentials any adventurer would need for any season. From summertime s’mores supplies to wintertime tire chains, and every season in between this is the go-to store before heading out into the wild. This historical building, constructed in 1911 used to be the location of the hiker’s center. The purpose of the building has changed but the wooden porch and shuttered doors and windows remain to give it the classic cabin charm.

Shaw General Store

Opening their doors in 1898 ensured that Shaw General Store would become one of the oldest businesses not only in the San Juan Islands, but also in the entire state of Washington. Overlooking the water, the original fir floors provide picturesque views and emphasize the charm of the building. The store is furnished with antiques and island memorabilia. Over the years the owners have changed but the store has always remained and been considered a central hub of island life. Shaw’s roast fresh coffee daily from a roaster invented by an islander, and they also sell local produce, sea salt, ice cream and fresh vegetables.

Swain’s General Store

Swain’s General Store, located in Port Angeles, started their business in 1957 and since then have continued to evolve and expand. Opening as a military surplus, hardware and fishing store, today they have expanded their selection to include hardware, paint, lawn and garden, automotive tools, marine, hunting and camping equipment, apparel, toys and so much more. With the expansion of their items the only logical thing was to also expand their building. The original 7,000 square feet building has grown to 38,300 square feet! Stop in and peruse their two floors of items for anything you might need.

Ashford General Store

Since 1905 Ashford General store has been supplying their community with the essentials, including food, supplies, firewood and anything else you might need for a night at the campground. Open year round, the store can be found six miles from the entrance to Mount Rainier National Park. Make sure to stop in and stock up on anything you might need for your time in the park. If you’re not gearing up for a night under the stars, pick up a movie from their video rental selection and enjoy a classic or new release from the comfort of your home or hotel room.

Country Mercantile

The Country Mercantile was founded in 1996 and has grown from a family operated produce stand to a valued community landmark. However, the goal remains the same, “sharing the flavors and craftsmanship of our region.” The niche country market features homemade treats including fudge, ice cream and hand dipped chocolates, gourmet foods, and gifts and décor. But arguably the main attraction of the Country Mercantile? Their annual Harvest Festival. With a pumpkin patch, corn maze and festive foods, the event is praised for bringing the community together. Now with two locations, visit the Country Mercantile in either Pasco or Richland.

Doty General Store

Considered one of the state’s last remaining country stores, Doty General Store, found in no other than Doty, Washington, still has vintage photos on the walls and cork boot nail marks in the original flooring. The current owners feel passionately about preserving the building’s charm and authenticity. Taking over in 2022, they have kept original furnishings, a vintage meat scale, antique milk cans, a typewriter, old logging gear and more. The original store opened in the early 1900s during the logging boom. Although a fire took most of the original buildings from the small town, Doty’s original structure still stands to this day. Today they offer pastries, sourdough, soups and sandwiches, ice cream, as well as everyday essentials.

The classic general store is a staple in large towns, but a necessity in smaller towns. Some are focused on preserving the history of the building and the memory of the original store, while others make sure to stock full of everything a person could need. All these general stores provide something to the community in which they are found. Whether it be supplies needed for daily living, a sweet treat after a long day, or just a sense of belonging, stepping inside one of these eight old timey general stores will leave you feeling some kind of way.
