The Forests That Haven't Changed In Millions Of Years

Earth is approximately 4.54 billion years old, or about one-third the age of the Universe. If that history were compressed into one calendar year, Homo sapiens would not appear until roughly 11:25 p.m. on December 31. Forests occupy far more of that timeline, but no living forest has remained literally unchanged for millions of years. Trees die, species evolve, and forest boundaries move as climates shift. However, many regions have retained a recognizable forest identity or preserved ancient evolutionary lineages through deep time. These forests are not biological time capsules. They are survivors of immense change.

Hyrcanian Forests, Iran and Azerbaijan

The Hyrcanian Forests extend for roughly 620 miles, or about 1,000 kilometers, along the southern and southwestern shores of the Caspian Sea. Their history reaches back an estimated 25 to 50 million years, when similar broadleaf forests covered much of the northern temperate region. Those forests later retreated during periods of glaciation and expanded again from refuges when the climate became milder. What survived was not an unchanged plant community but a forest tradition that persisted through repeated climatic upheavals.

The UNESCO World Heritage property encompasses 17 protected sections across Iran and Azerbaijan. More than 3,200 vascular plant species have been documented in the wider region, along with approximately 180 bird species and 58 mammal species. Persian leopards, wolves, and brown bears remain among its largest predators. The oldest known trees are generally between 300 and 400 years old, with some possibly reaching 500 years. Their age is measured in centuries, while the forest system behind them reaches back millions of years.

Often described as the world's oldest rainforest, the Daintree forms part of Queensland's Wet Tropics. Its surviving plant lineages preserve evidence of rainforest evolution extending deep into the age of Gondwana, although the widely repeated 180-million-year figure does not represent the age of the present trees or an unchanged ecosystem.

The Daintree lies within the Country of the Eastern Kuku Yalanji people, whose connection to the landscape extends back thousands of years. The Daintree Rainforest is thickly covered by layers of tropical plants and trees, which coat the forest's rolling mountains, deep gorges, and coursing rivers and streams. The wider Wet Tropics contains many ancient plant lineages and regionally endemic species, while the Daintree supports animals including southern cassowaries, Bennett's tree-kangaroos, musky rat-kangaroos, spotted-tailed quolls, possums, bandicoots, rodents, and bats. Reptiles such as Boyd's forest dragon live alongside amphibians, fish, and a vast range of insects.

The Amazon Rainforest, South America

The Amazon remains the world's largest rainforest, but it has not escaped modern damage. A major scientific synthesis published in 2024 estimated that about 15% of the original forest had been cleared. It is also estimated that 17% of the remaining forest had been degraded by logging, edge effects, understory fires, and other human disturbances.

Covering more than 1.4 billion acres, the Amazon extends across eight countries and the French territory of French Guiana. It contains more than 10% of Earth's terrestrial biodiversity and occupies about 1% of the planet's total surface area. The Amazon River carries roughly 20% of the river water discharged into the world's oceans, rather than containing 20% of all freshwater on Earth.

Amazonian forests store an estimated 150 to 200 billion metric tons of carbon. Their vast canopy also recycles moisture and produces a net cooling effect that influences rainfall across South America. However, the forest's carbon balance varies by region, and parts of southeastern Amazonia now release more carbon than they absorb because of deforestation, fire, and rising tree mortality.

Palaeorecords indicate that forests have covered much of Amazonia for approximately 65 million years. Yet that continuity was never static. Wetlands once dominated much of the western Amazon, savannas expanded during drier periods, and forest boundaries shifted as rainfall patterns changed. Forests have expanded over the savanna in parts of the southern Amazon during the past 3,000 years, while Indigenous peoples have managed and modified Amazonian landscapes for millennia.

Taman Negara, Malaysia

Taman Negara was gazetted through separate state enactments in 1938 and 1939. It now protects approximately 4,343 square kilometers, or just over one million acres, of tropical forest across Pahang, Kelantan, and Terengganu. The popular claim that the forest is 130 million years old refers loosely to the deep evolutionary history of Southeast Asian rainforests rather than the measured age of the present ecosystem.

The park contains lowland dipterocarp forest, montane vegetation, rivers, limestone formations, and habitats used by threatened animals such as Malayan tigers, Asian elephants, Malayan tapirs, and sun bears. It also supports exceptionally rich communities of plants, birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish, and insects, although published species totals vary according to the survey and geographic area used.

Large portions remain free from intensive development, but Taman Negara is neither uninhabited nor untouched. Indigenous Batek communities have longstanding relationships with their forests and continue to use routes through the landscape. Tourism, surrounding land use, wildlife pressures, and climate change also prevent the park from being described as ecologically frozen in the past.

Gondwana Rainforests, Australia

The Gondwana Rainforests of Australia comprise 41 protected reserves across southeastern Queensland and northeastern New South Wales. These remaining forests preserve plant and animal lineages whose evolutionary histories reach back to Gondwana, the southern supercontinent that once included Australia, Antarctica, South America, Africa, India, and Zealandia.

Their vegetation records several major stages in plant evolution. Fern lineages represented in the reserves reach back to the era when pteridophytes dominated many terrestrial environments. Araucarian conifers represent lineages prominent during the Jurassic, while relict flowering plants preserve evidence of early angiosperm evolution. The reserves also provide habitat for ancient songbird lineages and more than 270 threatened species.

Modern forest cover is only a remnant of its former extent. Rainforests covered much of Australia for millions of years after the continent separated from Antarctica, but they contracted as Australia moved north and became drier. Fire, climatic changes, land clearing, invasive species, and habitat fragmentation reduced them further. Today's Gondwana Rainforests survive as an archipelago of refuges.

Continuity Rather Than Stasis

None of these forests contains the same trees or the exact combination of species that existed millions of years ago. The Amazon endured while its boundaries moved. The Hyrcanian Forests retreated and returned from refuges. Australia's Wet Tropics and Gondwana Rainforests preserved ancient lineages as surrounding habitats disappeared. Taman Negara retains Southeast Asia's tropical-forest inheritance without being a 130-million-year-old ecosystem frozen in place. These are the closest examples of forests that have not changed in millions of years, but their real achievement is surviving while change continued around and within them.
