Washington state is part of the Pacific Northwest and is rich in diverse beauty. To the west lies the Pacific Ocean, while within the state, towns and cities are situated along Puget Sound. Visitors to the region enjoy sights of the Olympic Mountains or the Columbia River. Considering the vast amount to see, it should come as no surprise that Washington is a popular destination. If you are planning a weekend getaway, any of these nine towns would make the perfect spot to visit.

Lynden

Those in search of unique Dutch sights will certainly enjoy Lynden, which is known as Washington's largest Dutch settlement. When you first stop in town, take a walk down Front Street. You will find shops and places to dine, but more interestingly, you will see buildings all constructed in the Dutch style. The most convenient place to stay while you are there would be The Inn at Lynden, located just across the street from popular local spots, such as the Dutch Bakery. Just down the street, you will find the Lynden Heritage Museum, housed in a historic school building dating back over a century. Ancient vehicles, woodworked pieces, and home goods tell the story of the early Dutch settlers. Those who prefer some time outdoors can head just a short drive south to Wiser Lake Park, where anglers can cast a line from along the shore, or simply enjoy a walk along the water.

La Conner is a shopping hub for those seeking unique gifts and a variety of activities to enjoy. The popular 1st Street runs along the Swinomish Channel, and visitors will find lines of restaurants to choose from. You will find everything from woodwork at The Wood Merchant to home goods at The Cusp. Conveniently, Hotel Planter is also located along this strip, putting you within walking distance of some of the town's most popular spots. You will find the Museum of Northwest Art just down the street, where regional artists have their work displayed as part of rotating collections, featuring media such as photography and paintings. Those hoping to enjoy the waters are also within walking distance of La Conner Waterfront Park, where they can stroll along the shores while watching the boats drift by or stop to enjoy a picnic.

Coastal Port Townsend lives up to its name with plenty to do along Port Townsend Bay. Visitors to town will want to head straight to The Monarch Hotel, which offers competitive pricing and a prime location. Just outside its doors is Pope Marine Park, which attracts visitors thanks to not only its views of the water but also its many events, such as summertime concerts. Just down the street at the Point Hudson Marina, visitors will find the Puget Sound Express. Guests can set out on the waters aboard tours to see orcas, gray whales, humpback whales, and the surrounding scenery of Port Townsend. Those hoping to explore the town's history will want to visit Fort Worden Historical State Park. There, Alexander Castle has stood as a town landmark since 1882. Not far from it, Battery Kinzie stands as a former coastal defense post until 1944.

Anacortes is the perfect spot for those who love time on the water, and visitors will want to stay at the Majestic Inn and Spa. Located just moments away from Guemes Channel to the north and Fidalgo Bay to the south, the inn offers luxurious views of the water, along with dining and a spa for those seeking extra comfort. It is only a short walk to Cap Sante Park, which features 37 acres of woodland that provide perfect views of the nearby Cap Sante Marina. While it is the town's only wine shop, tasting room, and wine bar, what makes it a destination for wine lovers is its unique selection. Leavenworth

Leavenworth is a Bavarian-themed town that is perfect for vacationers seeking unique sights and sounds. Visitors can walk along U.S. Route 2, which runs through the center of town, and find a line of buildings in the Bavarian style. This route is ideal for visitors who want to shop or dine. Along the route, you will find the Bavarian Lodge. The lodge is a convenient place to stay, built in the Bavarian style, where guests can enjoy a drink at the Woodsman Pub and spend time around the fireplace. Within walking distance, you can find Waterfront Park, which sits along the Wenatchee River. Visitors come to spot deer and beavers while walking along the water, while others enjoy bird-watching or fishing along the river. Just north of town, you can also find the Leavenworth Summer Theater. Those hoping to enjoy a live performance will find productions such as Bright Star or The Sound of Music to enjoy while sitting in the open-air amphitheater.

Seabrook

True to its name, Seabrook is best known for its coastal location, and it is most enjoyed by those who appreciate time outdoors. Seabrook is a very small town, but it is possible to stay in town at Ocean Song Beach Cottage Rental. Guests can enjoy a wood-burning fireplace and a hot tub while relaxing in the evening. During the day, it is just a short walk to Seabrook Beach.
