The town of Frankenmuth, Michigan.

9 Gorgeous Michigan Towns To Visit

"Gorgeous" reads differently across Michigan. In East Tawas it's the long sandy curve of Tawas Bay with the lighthouse out at Tawas Point. In Frankenmuth it's the painted Bavarian facades and the Holz-Brücke wooden covered bridge over the Cass River. In Saugatuck it's Oval Beach against the wooded dunes and a working artist colony that has been there since the early 20th century. In Munising it's the sandstone cliffs of Pictured Rocks rising directly out of Lake Superior. The nine towns ahead each earn the list on a specific kind of beauty, not a generic version.

East Tawas

East Tawas sits on Tawas Bay along the western shore of Lake Huron with a long sandy shoreline that has earned it the local nickname "Cape Cod of the Midwest." The bay's gentle slope into the water makes it usable for sailing, paddling, fishing, power boating, and shallow-water family play. Schooners and white-sailed boats run in and out of the harbor on most summer days.

Tawas Point State Park sits at the tip of the bay and has earned regional recognition in recent years from Midwest Living. The Tawas Point Lighthouse on the point is the photographed centerpiece. Back in the village, Newman Street is the main commercial drag with bookstores, fudge and candy shops, boutiques, and gift stores. The long pier at the eastern end of town makes for a quiet sunset walk after the day winds down.

Escanaba

Locals call it "Port Esky." The Upper Peninsula city of about 12,300 sits on Little Bay de Noc off Lake Michigan and runs on its working harbor history. The 40-foot Peninsula Point Lighthouse offers the best lake views in the area. The Escanaba Public Library and the Drifters Family Restaurant cover the daily local rhythm.

Fayette Historic State Park sits a short drive from town and offers a tour of about 20 preserved historic iron-smelting town buildings with a visitor center and exhibits. The Upper Hand Brewery handles the evening end of a visit. Haymeadow Falls and its trail are within reach for a hike and double as a snowshoeing route in winter.

Frankenmuth

Frankenmuth is a working German-themed town in the heart of the American Midwest. The community runs hard on its Bavarian heritage including the Holz-Brücke wooden covered bridge over the Cass River, the painted facades along Main Street, and a long-running Oktoberfest. Local restaurants run on chicken dinners, bratwurst, German breakfasts, and pretzels.

Bronner's Christmas Wonderland on the south side of town is the largest Christmas store in the world. The store stays open year-round and stretches across more than seven acres of retail space. The downtown streetscape pulls photographers in for its postcard architecture.

Grand Haven

Grand Haven carries the official "Coast Guard City" designation and the harbor entrance at the mouth of the Grand River anchors the town visually. Spring Lake farmers' markets, paved bike paths, and the Lakeshore Boardwalk fill out the day-to-day local list. The Grand River, Lake Michigan, and inland Spring Lake all sit within walking distance of downtown.

Grand Haven City Beach and Grand Haven State Park both run sandy frontage on Lake Michigan with the South Pier Lighthouse out at the channel entrance. The trolley loops through downtown and the riverfront shopping district. The Musical Fountain at the waterfront has run nightly shows from Memorial Day through Labor Day for decades.

Munising

Munising sits on the northern shore of the Upper Peninsula between Grand Island and the Hiawatha National Forest. The location makes it the practical base camp for visits to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, with cliff faces, sandstone formations, and waterfalls running for about 40 miles east along the Superior coastline.

The Alger Underwater Preserve sits offshore and protects multiple 19th-century shipwrecks in clear shallow water. Boat tours and kayak tours both run out of the harbor through the summer. Tracey's at the Roam Inn is the regular evening dining spot in the village.

Saugatuck

Saugatuck is a year-round arts colony on Michigan's southwestern lakeshore that has worked as an artists' destination since the early 20th century. The Ox-Bow School of Art was founded by School of the Art Institute of Chicago faculty and still runs summer residency programs. The Saugatuck Center for the Arts handles plays, films, and lectures year-round.

Oval Beach has appeared on multiple national best-beach lists for its dune backdrop and clear water. Saugatuck Dunes State Park covers the wooded ridges and trails north of town. The downtown commercial strip runs on boutiques, farm-to-table restaurants, and live music.

St. Ignace

St. Ignace anchors the north end of the Mackinac Bridge on the Upper Peninsula side. The town has been continuously occupied since the late 1600s and ranks among the oldest European settlements in the upper Midwest. Native American gathering history at the site predates that by centuries.

The Museum of Ojibwa Culture and the Straits Cultural Center cover the local Native American and French missionary history together. The annual Native American Festival and the Rendezvous Pow Wow draw regional crowds in summer. Lone Wolf Gifts on the main strip stocks regionally made crafts. Mackinac Island sits a short ferry ride east and runs its own car-free historic district, fudge shops, and Grand Hotel grounds. Pasties (savory hand pies) are the regional staple worth tracking down at one of the local bakeries.

Tecumseh

Tecumseh sits in southeastern Michigan with a working historic downtown along Chicago Boulevard and the River Raisin running just south of the commercial blocks. The Art Trail Tecumseh installs public sculpture along a walkable downtown loop. Local canoe and kayak outfitters cover the river side of an afternoon out.

Hidden Lake Gardens is a Michigan State University-operated conservatory and botanical garden a short drive west of town. Tecumseh's Taste Experience runs a guided food tour of four downtown spots that have become the local culinary anchors. The town's history runs back to the 1820s when the area was first surveyed for settlement and the historic district preserves a long pre-Civil War commercial streetscape.

Traverse City

Traverse City carries the "Cherry Capital of the World" designation, and the surrounding Old Mission and Leelanau peninsulas hold the bulk of the state's tart cherry production. The town runs about 16,000 residents but draws far more visitors during the National Cherry Festival in early July. The 180 miles of shoreline around Grand Traverse Bay handles the beach and boating side of a visit.

The Miller Creek Nature Preserve and the Traverse Area Recreation and Transportation (TART) Trail cover the walking and cycling end of the day. Sunset cruises run on tall ships out of the bay through summer. Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore sits about 30 miles west with 400-foot dunes climbable down to the Lake Michigan shore.

From The Bridge To The Bay

These nine towns cover Michigan across both peninsulas and four Great Lakes shorelines. Frankenmuth and Saugatuck run on cultural heritage. East Tawas, Grand Haven, and Traverse City run on water access. Munising, St. Ignace, and Escanaba carry the Upper Peninsula history and outdoor base-camp role. Tecumseh covers the inland southern Michigan small-town pattern. Together they make the case for an in-state road trip that does not need to end at any one stop.
