9 Coolest Pennsylvania Towns For A Summer Vacation In 2026

Pennsylvania hands you rivers, trails, and dark skies worth staying up for. You can cycle New Hope in the morning and canoe Bedford after lunch. Cool off in a Warren pool or stargaze the dark skies above Coudersport. Wind down in a riverside park in Greenville when the heat backs off. These nine towns make the summer case.

New Hope sits right on the Delaware River, and in summer the art galleries, riverside dining decks, and towpath traffic take over. Start the morning on the Delaware Canal Towpath, a nearly 60-mile trail that runs through town on its way between Easton and Bristol. For a slower look, the New Hope Railroad pulls a 1925 steam locomotive through the forest, and the First Class parlor cars are air-conditioned for the heat. Time a visit for August and you catch the New Hope Automobile Show and its lineup of domestic and foreign cars. The First Friday Summer Series turns downtown into a block party with a beer garden, a drone light show, fireworks, and live music.

Coudersport

Set into Potter County's rolling hills and deep forest, Coudersport saves its best trick for after dark. By day, Cherry Springs State Park turns up elk, bobcats, and soaring bald eagles. By night, it is one of the premier stargazing spots in the East, the dark sky at its sharpest around the new moon. Daytime has its own pull. Rainbow Paradise Fishing Park lets anyone cast a line with no license required, and a few minutes away the Coudersport Ice Mine forms ice only in the warm months. In summer the Bark Peelers' Festival celebrates the lumber trade with log rolling and chainsaw carving.

Bedford

Bedford pairs mountain scenery with deep early-American history. The Raystown Branch of the Juniata River runs through town for summer canoeing and fishing. If you would rather drive, the town starts the Bedford County Covered Bridge Driving Tour, a 40-mile loop past fourteen covered bridges that begins at Old Bedford Village. That living-history museum puts you among log cabins and period-dressed blacksmiths and artisans showing how things were made centuries ago. To stay over, the Omni Bedford Springs Resort and Spa keeps indoor and outdoor pools, an 18-hole championship golf course, and guided nature hikes.

Warren

Warren sits where the Allegheny River meets the Allegheny National Forest, which makes it a summer base for anyone who likes both water and woods. Allegheny Outfitters on Clark Street rents canoes and kayaks and runs overnight river excursions for a longer trip. On land, the 20-acre Clifford R. Betts Memorial Park has softball, baseball, and tennis, plus a paved path out to a flower garden. When the heat wins, the Warren C.A.R. Pool gives kids a slide and a water fountain to cool off. Close the day at Bent Run Brewing Co. over small-batch craft beer and local food.

Lititz

Lititz is one of the coolest small towns in the United States, with a Moravian center and historic buildings along flower-lined streets. Start downtown at Lititz Springs Park, where shaded paths and cool streams make an easy morning stroll. From there, the Lititz recCenter opens an air-conditioned court for pickleball and an indoor lap pool that is one of the largest in Lancaster County. In the afternoon, bike the Warwick to Ephrata Rail Trail, a 7.5-mile run from Broad Street through rolling farmland and historic villages. For something different, the Wolf Sanctuary of P.A. runs tours of more than 50 wolf dogs and gray wolves, including the summer-only Twilight with the Wolves fundraiser under live music and a full moon.

Huntingdon

Huntingdon sits among rolling ridges and farmland, with wide views and quick access to the outdoors. In town, the 34-acre Riverside Park runs along the Juniata River with a boathouse, a play area, a football pitch, and walking paths. Rothrock Outfitters rents kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards, and if you would rather stay on land, the same shop rents fat-tire and hard-tail mountain bikes. The Huntingdon Country Club books tee times on its 18-hole course and keeps a golf simulator in its in-house pub. When the afternoon turns hot, head underground at Lincoln Caverns, a show cave that holds a steady 52 degrees, so bring a light jacket. Its Summer Family Fun Nights add gemstone panning, a family treasure hunt, and a lantern tour.

Greenville

Set in the rolling hills of northwest Pennsylvania, Greenville keeps a laid-back summer built around its waterways and green spaces. The Upper Shenango River Water Trail is the headliner, a 23-mile run that is ideal for launching a paddleboard or kayak. Grab the gear at Carried Away Outfitters, which also keeps three indoor axe-throwing lanes, a rage room, and a splatter room for a different kind of fun. A few blocks from downtown, Riverside Park has paved river-view trails, a playground, and a disc golf course. Come in July for Greenville Heritage Days, when the park fills with food trucks, craft booths, inflatable rides, historical reenactments, and a fireworks show over the water.

Jim Thorpe

Jim Thorpe earns its nickname, the Little Switzerland of America, with Victorian buildings set against the Pocono Mountains. The clearest way to see it is the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway, whose vintage coaches run narrated out-and-back trips along towering cliffs. The line cuts into Lehigh Gorge State Park, where summer crowds hit the wilderness bike trails and the whitewater rapids. Minutes from downtown, Mauch Chunk Lake Park draws swimmers to its beach and anglers to a 345-acre lake of walleye, crappie, and perch, with 135 campsites for a longer stay. The park connects to the Switchback Railroad Trail and its two intersecting nine-mile routes over slick rock and steep descents.

Hawley

Hawley packs a lakeside summer into a compact town, with Lake Wallenpaupack and the Lackawaxen River both close at hand. Spend a day at the Hawley Silk Mill, a community space holding an art gallery, a coffee shop, a brewery, boutiques, and wellness studios. For more nature than commerce, walk or jog the 5.5-mile Hawley Trail, which links to Bingham Park in what was once a 19th-century canal basin, now set up for tennis, basketball, and skateboarding. As summer winds down, Wally Lake Fest spreads across town with boat parades, sailboat tours, food booths, and live bands on a floating stage.

Chase The Summer Sun In Pennsylvania

The coolest Pennsylvania towns for a 2026 summer do not all run on the same plan. Jim Thorpe sells canyon views and railway rides, Warren sells river and forest, and Coudersport sells a sky full of stars. Some days are for paddling a lake and others for stargazing after dark. What ties them together is space to do summer your own way. Nine towns, nine versions of the season.
