10 Most Beautiful Small Towns In The Northern United States You Should Visit

The northern United States carries its beauty on the water. Camden’s schooners still raise sail in Penobscot Bay. Astoria’s Victorian houses still climb the hills above the Columbia River. Bayfield’s harbor still launches the ferry to Madeline Island across Lake Superior. Rockport’s Motif #1 still sits red at the end of Bradley Wharf where painters have set up easels for over a century. From Oregon’s Columbia River to Maine’s Penobscot Bay, the list runs ten towns long.

The Flavel House Museum holds Queen Anne furnishings in the 1885 home of a riverboat captain. Galena sits in the rolling hills of northwest Illinois along the Galena River, a short distance from where the river empties into the Mississippi. The town’s lead-mining boom of the 1820s and 1840s built a downtown that’s now over 85 percent listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and Ulysses S. Grant’s home from his Galena years before the Civil War remains preserved as a state historic site. Main Street still holds 19th-century brick storefronts converted into bed-and-breakfasts, restaurants, and shops. Galena On the Fly runs sunrise hot air balloon flights with views across the Mississippi Valley.

Rockport sits at the tip of Cape Ann, with harborfront streets running up to Bearskin Neck where shops and galleries occupy old fishing shacks. Motif #1, the red fishing shack at the end of Bradley Wharf, is the most-painted building in America, dating to the 1840s and rebuilt after the Blizzard of 1978. Halibut Point State Park preserves a former granite quarry on the headland, with trails over the rocks and views down the Atlantic coast. The Fish Shack Bar & Restaurant on Bearskin Neck handles fish-and-chips, and a handful of small inns run year-round.

The Beauty of the Northern United States

The 10 towns above span the country from Oregon to Maine, and each one earns its place differently. A Massachusetts harbor with a famously painted shack is not interchangeable with a Wisconsin gateway to a 21-island archipelago, or with a Maine midcoast town protected by a mile of granite breakwater. Take any of them on its own terms, and the visit lands.
