YouTube is one of the most popular websites on the internet. The company was started in 2005 by Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim; three former PayPal workers. In 2006 it was purchased by Google for $1.65 billion. The corporate headquarters for YouTube is located in San Bruno, California, a community situated on the Golden State’s northwestern coast between the cities of San Francisco and San Jose. The company’s street address is listed as 901 Cherry Avenue, which is located next to Interstate 380.

Purpose Of YouTube

YouTube is a site which features both corporate and user-generated videos. It allows users to view, upload, rate, share, comment on, and distribute videos on a platform which is available throughout the world. Popular material on the site includes clips and video material from a wide range of sources including television shows, movies, blogs as well as original video content which is produced by both individuals and businesses. The site also features live streaming as well as short films, educational videos, interviews, movie trailers, and music videos. YouTube has grown throughout the years and presently includes several subscription services and apps such as YouTube Premium, YouTube TV, YouTube Go, and YouTube Music.

San Bruno, The Location Of YouTube Headquarters

The city of San Bruno is located in San Mateo County which is part of the much larger San Francisco Metropolitan Area. The community is geographically situated between South San Francisco and the San Mateo County city of Millbrae which is only twelve miles away from the downtown area of San Francisco. Incorporated in 1914, this community, which occupies an area of 5.46 square miles, is home to a population of approximately 41,114 residents. YouTube currently plays an important economic role in the local community and is ranked as San Bruno's largest employer. In 2018, approximately 2,000 people worked at the website’s headquarters.

San Bruno is also home to a twenty-acre former naval facility. Popular tourist attractions in the city also include the SFO Museum which is made up of 25 galleries and is the only accredited museum to be located in an airport. The California community is also home to the Golden Gate National Cemetery as well as various nature parks including San Bruno Mountain and Point Park.

History Of YouTube's Headquarters

Although YouTube was originally based in San Mateo, California, in 2007 its headquarters were relocated to its present location. Designed in 1994, the main building of the YouTube headquarters was built in 1997 and originally intended to house Gap Inc. Comprised of more than six buildings in total the facility was constructed in an environmentally conscious fashion complete with energy-efficient ventilation systems and a green roof (which involves planting vegetation over a water-resistant membrane).

A Shooting Incident At The YouTube Headquarters 

On April 3, 2018, YouTube’s headquarters was the scene of a major shooting incident which resulted in four people being shot with three of them suffering from serious injuries. The shooter, a woman later identified as Nasim Najafi Aghdamas, was a regular YouTube video contributor who harbored a variety of complaints against the website particularly in regards to its user policies and the censorship of her YouTube channels. Aghdamas shot herself and died at the scene.
