The Largest Convention Centers In The United States
Nine convention centers in the United States have at least a million square feet of exhibit space, and McCormick Place in Chicago has more of it than any of them. Weighing in at a hefty 2.6 million square feet, it leads the pack when it comes to the actual exhibit-hall floor space, the figure that the trade show industry itself refers to as "prime" exhibit space. Meeting rooms and ballrooms are excluded, as are lobbies and outdoor lots. Even without them, these places are big. It's also why a seven-million-square-foot building in Orlando ranks third rather than first. Figures are the venues' own as of 2026, checked against Trade Show Executive's 2026 World's Top Convention Centers directory, the industry's annual survey.
1. McCormick Place, Chicago, Illinois

Exhibit space totals 2,600,000 sq ft.
McCormick Place has reported the same 2.6 million square feet of exhibit space for more than a decade, and no other American venue has matched it. Located on the Lake Michigan shore a mile south of the Loop in Chicago, its complex has four connected buildings. These are Lakeside Center, the North Building from 1986, the South Building from 1996, and the West Building from 2007. Between them, they put 1.2 million square feet of that exhibit floor on a single level.
The original hall opened in November 1960 but burned down in 1967, killing a security guard and leading to changes in fire codes across the country. Lakeside Center replaced it on the same foundations in 1971, and the 4,188-seat Arie Crown Theater, which came through the fire with only minor damage, is still inside it. The Chicago Auto Show is a consistent tenant and is held every February.
2. Las Vegas Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada

Exhibit space totals 2,500,000 sq ft.
The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority lays claim to 2.5 million square feet of exhibit space following a $600 million renovation of the original halls that finished in January 2026, in time for CES, the consumer electronics show held in Las Vegas since 1978. The center opened in April 1959 east of the Strip, with a 90,000-square-foot hall and a 6,300-seat arena.
The South Hall opened in 2002 and more than doubled the building's size. The West Hall, opened in June 2021, added a further 600,000 square feet of exhibit floor, including a 328,000-square-foot section that's the largest column-free hall in North America. The Convention Center Loop, an underground shuttle tunnel, runs beneath the 200-acre campus.
3. Orange County Convention Center, Orlando, Florida

Exhibit space totals 2,053,820 sq ft.
By total size, the Orange County Convention Center is the biggest facility on this list at seven million square feet. But that figure also counts the meeting rooms, lobbies, and other spaces excluded here, leaving 2,053,820 square feet of exhibit floor space split between the West Building, with 1,103,538, and the North-South Building, with 950,282. Not bad for a venue that opened in 1983 as a 325,000-square-foot hall at the south end of International Drive in Orlando.
The West Building's exhibit hall is an impressive 2,500 feet in length, longer than the main span of the Brooklyn Bridge, and the North-South hall covers 22 acres under one roof. A new phase is currently underway and will add 100,000 square feet of flexible space by 2029. Rounding off the venue's stats, it hosts 115 conventions and trade shows every year.
4. Georgia World Congress Center, Atlanta, Georgia

Exhibit space totals 1,400,000 sq ft.
The gap between third and fourth is the widest on the list, but the Georgia World Congress Center is still a big place to wander. Opened in September 1976, its 1.4 million square feet of prime exhibit space is spread across 12 halls in three buildings, with a total footprint in downtown Atlanta next to the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, now covering 3.9 million square feet.
Although it was a more modest 350,000 square feet at the time, it was the first convention center in the country owned by a state and marked its 50th anniversary in September 2026. A 100,000-square-foot addition completed in 2019 joined Halls B and C into more than one million square feet of contiguous floor. Notable events include its use as the International Broadcast Center for the 1996 Summer Olympics.
5. Kentucky Exposition Center, Louisville, Kentucky (Tied)

Exhibit space totals 1,100,000 sq ft.
The position of Louisville's Kentucky Exposition Center on this list will have changed by the time 2027 rolls around. Trade Show Executive lists it at 1,100,000 square feet of prime exhibit space, while the venue counts 1.2 million square feet of indoor space, including two arenas, of which more than 700,000 square feet is Class A exhibit hall. Opened in 1956 as the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center on 400 acres near the airport in Louisville, it's home to the Kentucky State Fair, the National Farm Machinery Show, and Equip Expo.
Its Freedom Hall arena was the University of Louisville's basketball home for 54 years. A $460 million transformation is currently underway and will add a new 350,000-square-foot building due for completion on December 31, 2026, with events starting in 2027, complete with a milking parlor suite for livestock shows. Once done, the new addition will take the center's prime event space to 1,380,000 square feet, breaking its tie for fifth with New Orleans.
5. New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, New Orleans, Louisiana (Tied)

Exhibit space totals 1,100,000 sq ft.
No other convention center in the country puts 1.1 million square feet of exhibit floor in one uninterrupted hall on a single level. The New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center does just that, covering 11 blocks along the Mississippi River at the edge of New Orleans's Warehouse District. Its first section was built as the Great Hall of the 1984 Louisiana World Exposition, the last world's fair held in the United States, and it hosted its first trade show, a helicopter exhibition, in January 1985.
Phase III, completed in 1999, brought the hall to its present size, and the center was renamed in 1992 for Ernest N. Morial, the city's first Black mayor. It also has 140 meeting rooms and a 4,000-seat theater, and a $557 million improvement plan is in progress.
7. The Venetian Expo, Las Vegas, Nevada

Exhibit space totals 1,035,600 sq ft.
The Venetian Expo has five halls that together add up to 1,035,600 square feet. The largest, Hall G, provides 380,000 square feet on the ground floor, while the smallest, Hall D, offers 100,600 square feet. Originally known as the Sands Expo when it opened in November 1990, behind the old Sands Hotel, it was at the time the only privately owned convention center in the country, with the COMDEX computer show as its first event.
Three years after the Sands was demolished in 1996, The Venetian opened, and the expo center took the Venetian name in September 2021. The SHOT Show, the firearms industry's trade show, has been held here since 2010.
8. Anaheim Convention Center, Anaheim, California

Exhibit space totals 1,013,607 sq ft.
The largest exhibit facility on the West Coast, the Anaheim Convention Center reports its Halls A through E as having 813,607 square feet of event space. Add to this the 200,000-square-foot ACC North, a two-level addition in 2017 that cost $190 million, and we're a smidge over the million mark. The center opened in July 1967 directly across from Disneyland, and its domed 7,500-seat arena staged wrestling at the 1984 Summer Olympics.
Six major expansions later, the campus now covers 53 acres. The NAMM Show, the music products industry's trade show, has been held here most Januarys since 1977, and VidCon and Natural Products Expo West fill the halls in between.
9. Mandalay Bay Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada

Exhibit space totals 1,000,000 sq ft.
MGM Resorts International pegs the exhibit space at Mandalay Bay at a round million square feet. Opened in January 2003, it's attached to the Mandalay Bay resort at the south end of the Las Vegas Strip, and at the time it was the fifth largest convention center in the country. A $70 million expansion completed in 2015 added 350,000 square feet of that exhibit space, along with a 900-space garage beneath it.
The entire 2.1-million-square-foot facility came out of a $100 million redesign in the spring of 2024. It also includes the Mandalay Bay Ballroom, a 100,000-square-foot space that MGM says is the largest pillarless hotel ballroom in the country.
Just Shy Of A Million
Topping off our list of contenders, the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York reached 850,000 square feet when its $1.5 billion expansion opened in May 2021. Just 10,000 square feet behind, the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Illinois, opened near O'Hare in 1975 with 840,000 square feet of prime space.
Other also-rans include the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, with 755,000 square feet. NRG Park, also in Houston, has 706,213 square feet of contiguous hall inside NRG Center, and I-X Center in Cleveland has 530,000. Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center Dallas is down to 529,250 square feet while it's rebuilt, and the Los Angeles Convention Center is working on a new wing that will give it 913,000 square feet in early 2029.
Changes Are Coming
Changes are certainly afoot in our list of the biggest convention centers in the US. Louisville's figure will be out of date by the end of 2026, when the Kentucky Exposition Center moves into fifth place on its own. Among the contenders, Houston, Los Angeles, and Dallas will open bigger halls between 2028 and 2030, though none will breach the million mark, so the top nine will stay as they are.
