7 Main Streets Where Southern California Comes Alive
There is so much to explore in the vibrant main streets that serve as the heart of Southern California's small towns. Venice
Abbot Kinney Boulevard is named after the millionaire who financed the creation of this American replica of the city in Italy for which it is named. This main boulevard is lined with the types of restaurants and shops that sum up the Southern California vibe. The Butcher’s Daughter is a popular vegetarian restaurant that is often frequented by celebrities. It is just up the street from Left on Friday, where you can try on all of the latest fashions in swimwear so you can look like a celebrity on the beach. Then you can stroll over to Saja Natural Wellness because who doesn’t want to look and feel their best? After dark, you can head over to the Brig to see live music and play a round of billiards.
Seal Beach
Located perfectly between the Pacific Coast Highway and the glistening Pacific Ocean is the quintessential Main Street of Seal Beach. This town is such a classic example of everything there is to love about Southern California. There are so many great little cafes and restaurants that you will not find anywhere else, like the Crema Cafe. The wholesome food, the down-to-earth vibe, and the atmosphere will nourish you and feed your soul. There are iconic shops like the Stitch + Feather, offering the perfect beachside bags and attire. And then you can stroll straight across Ocean Avenue and into Eisenhower Beachfront Park and out onto the classic wooden pier to take in the view of the ocean and all of the surrounding cities. Palm Springs
Palm Springs became known as the playground to the stars because it is about two hours inland from Hollywood. Movie stars like Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley would use this desert oasis as a retreat while filming. Since then, this has become an absolute paradise loaded with so much to explore. Palm Canyon Drive is lined with shops, galleries, and eateries that embody the glamorous desert vibe that is Palm Springs. And the Palm Springs General Store, located in Mercado Plaza, is the best place in town to shop for souvenirs.
Coronado
Coronado is just across the bay from downtown San Diego. It is nicknamed Crown City because its name is Spanish for crown, and if this city were a crown, one of its biggest gems would be the Hotel Del Coronado. This world-famous hotel is located on the southern end of Orange Avenue. The film Some Like It Hot, starring Marilyn Monroe, was shot here, and this hotel is frequented by celebrities and royalty. With that said, anyone can admire the grand architecture and art while perusing the shops at the hotel. After you have worked up an appetite, head across the street to Miguel’s Cocina, which is tucked away in the courtyard of El Cordova Hotel. This hidden treasure is known by the locals as the best Mexican food. Definitely try the queso sauce with the fresh tortilla chips. Then you will be all set for a leisurely stroll down Orange Avenue, along with the tourists from all over the globe. And when you are done window shopping, you can head over to the vintage Village Theater to relax while you catch a flick.
Laguna Beach
Laguna Beach is the epitome of a Southern California beach town. And Broadway Street runs right through the heart of Laguna Beach’s downtown district. You can pick up some sandals at the Treasures of Laguna thrift shop. From there stroll to Beach Feet Spahhh for a pedicure. Afterwards, pop next door to Dolce Gelato for a sweet treat to go. Or if you are feeling a little more health-conscious, there is Acai Republic. And when you walk to the end of the street, that will put you right at Main Beach, where you can saunter along the classic wooden boardwalk and soak up the sunshine and the fresh ocean air.
La Jolla
La Jolla's Prospect Street runs parallel to the coastline, and it is often called the Rodeo Drive of San Diego. It is lined with luxurious jewelry shops, high-end clothing shops, art galleries, and fancy restaurants. The First Friday Art Walk is hosted monthly on the first Friday between four and seven in the afternoon. You can meander along Prospect and admire art from all of the various galleries while you enjoy the monthly soiree. If you are feeling artsy, then go check out the Museum of Contemporary Art.
