Atlanta is the capital city of the state of Georgia. The town is a major hub for sports and it evident since the city hosted the 1996 summer Olympics. The city had invested in infrastructure to make the Olympics a successful tournament. The city plays host to several important sports teams that take part in national as well as regional sports. The sports lovers of this city usually head to the obligatory venues to support their favorite teams.

5. Atlanta Falcons

They are the professional football team that plays in the NFL (National Football League.) They are commonly known as the Falcons. The Falcons have recently acquired a new state of the art stadium. Construction was funded by its owner, Arthur Blank who gave 800 million dollars and the city authority gave 200 million dollars. The total cost was 1.5 billion dollars, 500 million dollars more than the original estimates. The work began in 2014 after the preparations were finalized. In addition to this new stadium called the Mercedes Benz, they have had two home grounds. One is the Georgia Dome (1991-2016) and the other is the Atlanta Fulton County Stadium which was shared with the Atlanta Brave Major League Baseball team from 1966 to 1991. Although they have not yet won a national championship, they have played in the Super Bowl, they have won the NFC division titles (West and South) six times and played in the playoffs 13 times. Their uniforms have the colors red, black, silver, and white. This team has a sporting rivalry with the New Orleans Saints and the Carolina Panthers. This team has its own broadcasting services in both radio and television. Their games are broadcasted using affiliate stations in Georgia

4. Atlanta Braves

It is a professional baseball team in Atlanta. They compete in the Major League Baseball since they are a member of the national league. They are known as the “braves”. This team has a rich history since it began in Boston. It moved to Atlanta in 1966 and played their home games at the Atlanta Fulton County stadium until 1996. They moved to a new park Turner field where they played up to 2016 from 1997. They moved to a new home ground called Sun Trust Park in 2017. It is among the most decorated teams in baseball. They have won a total of 39 titles - three World Title Series, seventeen National League titles, twelve east division titles, five west division titles, and two wild card births. Their team colors are scarlet red, navy blue, and white. The team has their games being broadcasted by television and radio stations. The team is currently owned by Liberty media which purchased it from Time Warner. This team joins the Toronto Blue Jays as one of the only two in the national league to be under majority corporate ownership. It also has a major rivalry with the New York Mets and the Philadelphia Phillies.

3. Atlanta Hawks

It is a professional basketball team that is a member of the National Basketball Association. It plays in the Eastern Conference southern division. The Philips Arena plays host to their home games. They are known as the Hawks. They have won the NBA championship once and they have gone a record number of 57 seasons without winning it. Even though, they have won the four conference titles and five division titles the latest coming in 2015. This team has been through tough times in the league despite the change in ownership that was to bring back its fortunes. It is during the tenure of manager Paul Millsap that they have improved. The high point is the reason that they have reached the conference finals in 2015. They lost to the winners Cleveland Cavaliers. They also became the first team to win the southeast division despite not being based in Florida. The team was acquired by billionaire Tony Ressler on April 22nd, 2015. The NBA governing board gave its approval to the acquisition on June 24th, 2015. The team colors are red, gray and green. There are plans to have white kits for home games and red or gray for away games. The team has competition from Boston Celtics and Orlando Magic. The most memorable are the games between the Hawks and the Celtics in the playoffs.

2. Atlanta United FC

It is a professional soccer team that is a member of the Major League Soccer Eastern conference. The club is owned by Arthur Blank. They play their home games at the Mercedes Benz Stadium. The team is coached by former Barcelona and Argentina coach Gerardo Martino. They had previously had their home matches played at the Bobby Dodd Stadium before moving to the new Mercedes Benz Stadium. The home games will be televised by Fox sports in the future. Their fan base is vibrant and growing. They are in contention to break the record attendance of their home games. American Family insurance has offered them kit sponsorship this season (2017). The junior team kits are sponsored by an American company called SunTrust Banks. Their colors are red and black with gold. The team was included in the Major league Soccer on April 16th, 2014. They have yet to win the national soccer championship.

1. Atlanta Dream

It is also a professional basketball team in Atlanta. It plays of the Eastern Conference in the Women’s National Basketball Association. This team was formed in 2008 and it is owned by Dream Too LLC. It is fondly known as the dream. Since the team was formed, it has reached the playoffs a record seven times and the finals only three times. They are yet to win the WNBA championship. Their home games are played at the Philips arena which is the home ground of the Atlanta Hawks. They get coverage from the Fox Sports South and the Sports South.
