9 Old-Timey General Stores In Oklahoma

Pioneer Woman Mercantile in Pawhuska and Meers Store & Restaurant near the Wichita Mountains show why Oklahoma's old-timey general stores still feel tied to the state's small-town identity. Many began as community hubs long before modern supermarkets arrived. They sold groceries and farming supplies along with medicines and everyday goods. Located in Pawhuska, Osage County, in the wide-open space of northern Oklahoma, the Pioneer Woman Mercantile occupies a building that stood for over a century before becoming what it is today. The original Osage Mercantile Company occupied the structure for decades starting in 1910, selling everything from groceries and baked goods to farming and ranching equipment. When Ree and Ladd Drummond purchased it in 2012, the new owners were committed to keeping its original character. Brick walls, tin ceilings, and some of the original flooring are still intact today.

This two-story building sells everything you expect at a general store, but with its own flair. It is known for selling cookbooks, specialty foods, home goods, jewelry, and ceramics, among many other curated products. There is a restaurant called the Deli on its main floor, and a bakery located on the second floor. The Mercantile opened in October 2016 and now draws thousands of visitors a day to Pawhuska.

Deer Creek Mercantile is a historic general store in Deer Creek, Oklahoma, dating back to 1905, when it was built to replace an earlier structure. It is the oldest storefront in Grant County and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was a shopping hub for locals and farmers, offering a full variety of groceries and personal necessities. It operated in its original state for almost 100 years before closing in 1994. In 2021, it reopened after Brittany Webster purchased the old, dilapidated mercantile. Although it was quite an undertaking, she was able to restore its historic character and open in time for Christmas. She worked hard to ensure the store's original pieces were kept intact. The restoration helped revive that area of town by paving the way for other shops to open up nearby.

Sitting in the heart of the store is a horse-drawn wagon that the original mercantile sold to a family in town in the early 1900s. The owners also kept the original signage on display outside, connecting the building to its historic roots. They sell curated vintage finds like old enamelware and vintage cookbooks, along with modern products and specialty foods including jam, biscuit mixes, and more.

General stores are known for promoting locally made specialty products, and that is exactly why Roark Acres Honey, Bees & More is on this list. This family-owned business in Jenks, Oklahoma, takes pride in selecting locally made and curated products. Walking into this light and airy store, you will feel a warm and inviting energy. Centered around community, it is clearly a local hot spot and welcomes visitors graciously.

Of course, their main product is honey, Okie Honey to be exact, but they sell so much more than that. Okie Honey is wildflower honey that is harvested from the northeastern section of Oklahoma. It is made with care, being lightly strained and never force-filtered. This means the raw, pure, and unprocessed honey still contains all its minerals, vitamins, and pollen. It has been a bestseller that customers keep buying again and again. They also use their beeswax to make a variety of products, including chapsticks, lotions, beard balms, and candles. In true general store fashion, they serve as a grocery store, selling fresh vegetables, eggs, milk, and cheese from local farms. They proudly support over 60 local artisans and farmers at this unique general store.

Located off Historic Route 66 in Yukon, Oklahoma, the historic building of the Mulvey Mercantile remains a landmark. In 1905, twin brothers Mike and Odie opened a general store under the name Mulvey. It held the title of the town's largest store until the 1930s. Originally a single building, it grew into a central hub for the community, adding buildings adjacent to it and eventually occupying half the block. They offered products not only to travelers but also to local farmers and ranchers. The Mulvey Mercantile also served as a hardware store, doctor's office, post office, and newspaper office.

Despite its once-flourishing business line, the store has been shut down for quite some time. Luckily, its historic two-story red brick building still acts as an important local landmark, and is now the local coffee shop, Coffee Slingers. Although the mercantile itself is closed, it is still worth a visit to grab a delicious coffee and pastry and to admire the history and architecture of what once was.
