Covering an area of 20,779 sq. km, Wales is a country located in the southwestern region of the United Kingdom. As observed on the map, Wales is a mountainous country, where the central and northern parts of the country are dominated by the Cambrian Mountains, the southern parts by the Brecon Beacons, and the northwestern part by the Snowdonia mountains. Situated in the Gwynedd county in the Snowdonia National Park is Mount Snowdon, which rises to an elevation of 1,085m and is the highest point in Wales.
Within the Cambrians, there are some small mountain ranges such as the Aran and Arennig, Glyderau, Molewynion, and Tryfan. In the northeastern part of the state, just above the Dee River, the Clwydian Hills are a short mountain range of undulating hills and moorland. The Brecon Beacons are a series of forested rolling hills that occupy the southern and southeastern parts of the country and also include the Black Mountains. Many deep caves, gorges, and waterfalls are found in this area.
The northern and western coastlines of Wales are covered by wide sandy beaches, while rugged sea cliffs front the southwestern coastline as well as the Llyn Peninsula. Rugged coastal cliffs, sandy beaches, and dunes are also found in the Gower Peninsula, which is situated in the southwestern part of the country. There are more than 50 islands that are located off the mainland of Wales. The largest of these islands is Anglesey, which is situated in the northwestern part of Wales. Some of the notable rivers of the country include Dee, Severn, Wye, Tywi, and Usk. The country’s lowest point is located along the Bristol Channel coastline (0m).
Wales is administratively divided into 22 principal areas (unitary authorities). Of these principal areas, there are 9 counties, 10 county boroughs, and 3 cities. In alphabetical order, the principal areas are Blaenau Gwent, Bridgend, Caerphilly, Cardiff, Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire, Gwynedd, Isle of Anglesey, Merthyr Tydfil, Monmouthshire, Neath Port Talbot, Newport, Pembrokeshire, Powys, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Swansea, Torfaen, Vale of Glamorgan, and Wrexham. The principal areas are further subdivided into a total of 878 communities.
