History of America's First Goldrush Town

Dahlonega was incorporated in 1833, shortly after the nation's first gold rush in 1828, and was named for the Cherokee taulonica, or “yellow metal.” A United States mint operated in Dahlonega from 1838 to 1861, when the Civil War disrupted production. The mint produced the Half Eagle ($5), Quarter Eagle ($2.50), Gold Dollar ($1), and Three Dollar Gold coins. The University of North Georgia was founded in 1873 on the site of the former mint, adding to the area's rich legacy.

When gold was discovered on Cherokee Nation territory in 1828, miners from across the region set up camp, drawing the attention of the U.S. Army during a period known as "the intrusion." Mining camps soon sprang up, the first being Auraria, southwest of present-day Dahlonega. An unnamed site became the city of Dahlonega in 1833 and served as the county seat of Lumpkin County. The federal government transferred ownership of the mint to the state of Georgia to establish Price Memorial Hall, part of North Georgia Agricultural College, later renamed the University of North Georgia.

Visitors come to Dahlonega to walk in the footsteps of history, and the old buildings provide a tangible glimpse into the town's heritage. While many people are familiar with the California Gold Rush in the mid-19th century, this sleepy town can boast the first prominent rush in the country, a fact that deserves more attention, but that does not seem to bother the friendly community.

The other two are Savannah's City Hall and the Georgia State Capitol dome in Atlanta, underscoring Dahlonega's importance to regional history. One of the many landmarks and a popular stop is the Dahlonega Gold Museum. Housed in the 1836 Lumpkin County Courthouse, it is teeming with historical significance and information about the pivotal gold rush that defines this region to this day.

Of course, no trip to Dahlonega is complete without seeing the legendary gold mines that put the city on the map. At one time, according to local lore, there was so much gold in this region that it lay on the surface, drawing more than 15,000 miners within the first year of discovery. While most of the gold that could be mined for economic purposes has been removed, visitors are encouraged to pan for the shiny mineral themselves in local creeks or at Crisson Gold Mine or the Consolidated Gold Mine.

Crisson Gold Mine was established in 1847 and opened to the public in 1969. The mine now sells ore in five-gallon buckets for customers who prefer to take the ore home without panning. Professional gold miners use trommels to separate gold from sand mechanically. The Consolidated Gold Mine was built in the late 19th century and was the largest gold mine east of the Mississippi River. Many gold-bearing rocks are still available, and guests can travel 200 feet below the earth and 100 years into the past to explore the mines with the Dahlonega Gold Package from the Dahlonega Gold Museum downtown.
