The Towns In The Rockies Where Retirees Are Actually Moving To
Not long ago, retiring to the Rocky Mountains meant selling an expensive house on the coast and living off the difference. That is no longer the typical story. Across a band of towns in Idaho, Montana, Colorado, and New Mexico, the number of residents 65 and older is climbing far faster than aging alone can explain. Some of these states barely tax a retirement check, and homes still cost less than they do on either coast. The people moving in, though, are mostly not the coastal transplants you would expect. If you are deciding where to spend your next thirty years, these are the places the numbers keep pointing to.
Coeur d'Alene, Idaho

Bald eagles congregate at Wolf Lodge Bay on Lake Coeur d'Alene each winter, and the Bureau of Land Management's weekly counts there usually peak in December, with a record 409 birds on Dec. 20, 2023. Between Nov. 20 and Jan. 3, a two-hour cruise leaves Coeur d'Alene's Boardwalk Marina at noon for the bay. Seniors 55 and older ride for $27.50, with warm drinks sold on board.
On the daily 90-minute cruises of the warmer months, the narration covers the Coeur d'Alene Resort's floating green, the par-3 14th hole that golfers reach on a boat named Putter. The 2-mile loop around Tubbs Hill starts a short walk from downtown through McEuen Park, and tai chi and chair yoga are on the Lake City Center's schedule. Homes in Coeur d'Alene sold for a median of $568,729 over the three months ending in September 2026. Kootenai County had about 7,400 more residents 65 and older in 2025 than in 2020, and about half of the roughly 1,200 people that age who move to the Coeur d'Alene area from another state each year come from Washington, with California a distant second.
Boise, Idaho

Around Boise, California is the former home of about half the people 65 and older who arrive from another state each year, and Ada County, which includes Boise and Meridian, gained more than 20,000 residents in that age group between 2020 and 2025. Each summer, Idaho Shakespeare Festival productions are staged in an open-air amphitheater on the banks of the Boise River, with room for up to 770 people and lawn seats starting at $26. Audiences bring a picnic and a chair or blanket, and the festival's 50th season, in 2026, included Macbeth and Sweeney Todd.
The Boise River Greenbelt is a 29-mile tree-lined path along the same river, open between sunrise and sunset. A year at Boise State's Osher Lifelong Learning Institute costs $120 and is open to adults 50 and older, less than five lawn seats at the festival, and Meridian Homecourt has 14 indoor pickleball courts. The median Boise sale price for July through September 2026 was $540,742, and Social Security benefits are untaxed in Idaho.
Kalispell, Montana

Spring enrollment in Flathead Valley Community College's Senior Institute reached its 230-student cap in 2025, and fall classes were added for the first time. Courses for people 65 and older, in subjects such as watercolor and creative writing, cost between about $83 and $103 each. On Saturday mornings between early May and mid-October, more than 200 vendors sell at the Kalispell Farmers Market on the same campus. About 26,700 people 65 and older lived in Flathead County in 2025, 18% more than in 2020. Counting movers of every age, Lake and Missoula counties, to the south, are the top sources of new residents. A Kalispell home sold for a median of about $502,000 between June and August 2026. Buffalo Hill Golf Club is a public 27-hole course, and Lone Pine State Park, 5 miles southwest of town, has 7.5 miles of trails and overlooks facing Flathead Lake.
Hamilton, Montana

Hamilton's median sale price reached $415,302 over the three months ending in September 2026, up 4.1% in a year, and more people of all ages move to Ravalli County from Missoula County, about an hour north, than from any other county. The county's population 65 and older grew by about 2,100 between 2020 and 2025, roughly 850 more than aging alone would have produced. On Saturday mornings, May through October, the Hamilton Farmers Market is held on downtown blocks along Bedford Street. Its 164 listed vendors include Bee Happy Honey Farm and Red Rooster Artisan Bakery, and the information booth is in front of the Ravalli County Museum.
Lunch at the Hamilton Senior Center costs $5 three days a week, and emergency and cancer care are available through Bitterroot Health, based at Daly Hospital in town. Just northwest of Hamilton, the Blodgett Canyon overlook trail is a 2.5-mile round trip beneath cliff walls that jut out over the canyon. Lake Como, about 19 miles away in the Bitterroot National Forest, has a sandy swimming beach and a $5 daily vehicle fee in summer.
Loveland, Colorado

Every August, hundreds of sculptors show and sell work at Loveland's Benson Sculpture Garden during Sculpture in the Park, and about 185 sculptures stand in the garden year-round. In February, valentines sent to the Loveland post office inside a larger envelope are hand-stamped with a special pictorial cancellation and remailed.
On the second and fourth Monday evenings of each month, a live band plays for dancers at the Chilson Recreation and Senior Center, where admission is $9.50 with the $20 annual senior card for people 62 and up. Cardholders also get pickleball open play, and a Volunteers of America lunch is served four days a week for a suggested $3 donation. Roughly 540 people 65 and older move into Larimer County each year from the Denver-Boulder area about an hour south, part of a 21% jump in the county's 65-plus population over five years. A typical Loveland home was valued at $493,188 in September 2026, and Devil's Backbone Open Space, west of town, has more than 17 miles of trail. Colorado residents 65 and older can subtract all of their Social Security income on state returns.
Grand Junction, Colorado

A year at Grand Junction's Senior Recreation Center costs $20 for people 50 and older, and most activities there cost 50 cents a day, with line dancing every Thursday. People 60 and older can take most Colorado Mesa University courses for $25 a credit hour through the Golden Scholars program, while New Dimensions noncredit classes for adults over 50 cost $75 a term.
Winters are generally mild at Colorado National Monument, just west of town, where entry is $25 per vehicle for a week. For visitors 62 and older, an $80 lifetime senior pass covers that entry and national parks across the country.
The area has more than 20 wineries, and Tiara Rado and Lincoln Park are the city golf courses. Grand Junction homes ran about $73,000 below Loveland's in September 2026, with a typical value of $419,825. Mesa County's 65-plus population grew 19% between 2020 and 2025, about 1,800 more people than aging in place would account for, and newcomers of all ages most often arrive from Garfield County, upstream on the Colorado River around Glenwood Springs and Rifle.
Durango, Colorado

The 9 a.m. train on the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, which runs early May through Nov. 1, takes about 3½ hours each way through the Animas Canyon, where there is no cell service. The schedule allows about two hours in Silverton for lunch before the trip back, a standard-class seat costs $118, and a one-way ticket that returns by motorcoach is also offered. In town, the paved Animas River Trail covers 7.1 miles, over eight bridges and through a tunnel, without crossing a street. San Juan County, N.M., home to Farmington, is the most common former home of new La Plata County residents of all ages, and the county had 22% more people 65 and older in 2025 than in 2020. Durango home values rose 3.5% in a year, to $754,540 in September 2026. About six miles north, Durango Hot Springs has more than 40 thermal soaking features, 10 of them ADA-accessible pools, and CommonSpirit Mercy Hospital in town is a Level III trauma center.
Santa Fe, New Mexico

On Saturdays year-round, up to 150 farmers and producers from 15 northern New Mexico counties sell chiles and honey at the Santa Fe Farmers' Market in the Railyard. More of Santa Fe's older out-of-state arrivals come from Texas than from any other state, enough that some newcomers call it "Austin West." Santa Fe County added about 6,700 people 65 and older between 2020 and 2025. The city's median home price was around $592,000 in the second quarter of 2026.
The Santa Fe Opera's season runs early July through late August in the Crosby Theatre, an open-air house with views of the Jemez and Sangre de Cristo mountains. Tailgate dinners start in the parking lot three hours before curtain, and temperatures drop sharply after sunset, so a warm layer is useful. The Renesan Institute for Lifelong Learning runs low-cost, multi-session courses for adults each fall, on subjects such as literature and history. Social Security is exempt from New Mexico income tax for single filers with adjusted gross incomes under $100,000 and couples under $150,000.
On Christmas Eve, Canyon Road is closed to cars around 5 p.m. for the Farolito Walk, when the street is lined with candlelit paper bags weighted with sand, and hot chocolate and cider are handed out at galleries that stay open for the evening.
Most Of These Moves Are Short Ones
For all the attention paid to buyers from California and Texas, most of the people landing in these towns do not come far. Spokane County, Washington, just across the state line, is the most common former home of new Kootenai County residents, and more than one in five people who move to Ravalli County from elsewhere in the country come from Missoula County, about an hour up the highway from Hamilton. Those counts cover movers of every age. The out-of-state arrivals are real, but the largest single wave is close to home and heavily weighted toward Boise, where Ada County added roughly 20,600 residents 65 and older between 2020 and 2025, more than the entire population of that age in Ravalli County.
