This Wyoming Downtown Is Made For Strolling

One of the state's most pedestrian-friendly downtowns, Cody is steeped in Old Western culture, evident in the town's historic landmarks and old brick buildings. The most iconic attractions are on Sheridan Avenue, a beautiful downtown that is easy to explore. Unique shops and restaurants line the street, inviting you to walk around and browse. Here you will also find beloved historic gems such as the Irma Hotel. Walking further west, you will come across engaging exhibits at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West.

One of the best spots to start your visit to Cody's downtown is at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West. Walking into the center, you will immediately be surrounded by the region's rich Western history. There is a historic exhibit at every turn, teaching you about everything from the nature of Yellowstone to Western art. See stories of cowboys in grit and glory come to life through historic photos and artifacts. Prepare to be wowed as you walk by displays showcasing beautifully crafted nineteenth-century beadwork. The center is home to five world-class museums, all housed under one roof.

The five museums include the Buffalo Bill Museum, the Plains Indian Museum, the Whitney Western Art Museum, the Draper Natural History Museum, and the Cody Firearms Museum. The Cody Firearms Museum is particularly unique since it is the most comprehensive firearms museum in the entire country. Here you will find over 10,000 artifacts from various centuries. Whether you are a collector or history buff, a visit here will spark some meaningful conversation about firearms.

Eateries on Sheridan Avenue

Exiting the museums, you will be right on Sheridan Avenue, the main street through Cody's downtown. Heading east, browse the various shops, galleries, and eateries lining the street. Check out Millstone's unexpected attraction, the arcade. Enjoy their large selection of video games and redemption ticket games.

Walking east again down Sheridan Ave, make a stop for a refreshment at Annie's Soda Saloon & Café. Just a 3-minute walk away from Millstone Pizza Company & Brewery, the Saloon's beloved ice-cream sodas are the perfect refreshment on a day of strolling. Inside, the wooden bar and rustic décor prompt you to imagine the town's past as you sip on your soda. After your refreshment, continue on your walk and browse some of the unique boutiques on Sheridan Avenue. Rockstar Cowgirl is a shop only steps to the right of Annie's Soda Saloon and Cade, and sells beautiful beaded handmade jewellery. The turquoise beaded bracelets, hat bands, and bedazzled belt buckles at the shop make unique souvenirs.

Walking back toward Annie's Soda Saloon and Café, one of Cody's iconic historic gems, the Irma Hotel, comes into view. Just a two-minute walk away, you will not be able to miss this building with its large red sign and Victorian-era architecture. When you enter the hotel, you will see the hotel's famous Cherrywood bar, which was a gift from Queen Victoria to Buffalo Bill. The hotel lobby has historical photographs that offer a window into the town's past. If you are planning to stay overnight in Cody, this is one of the best places to stay in town. The rooms are homey with wallpaper, wooden furniture, historical décor, and cozy carpets. There is also an on-site restaurant known for its delicious meals.

If you decide to stay at the Irma Hotel, you will be conveniently across the street from the Historic Cody Theatre. Only steps away from the hotel, the theater is a great place to go for some entertainment at night. Their shows include everything from plays to musical performances that capture the spirit of the Wild West.

Craving some fresh air and greenery after exploring the downtown? Just a five-minute walk west of the Buffalo Bill's Irma Hotel is Cody City Park. Walk around and embrace the beauty of nature in a comfortable setting. Let yourself unwind amongst the birds, greenery, and trees. The green space is a great spot for a relaxing break or a picnic. There are also restrooms and a leisure playground, making it a family-friendly destination. In the summertime, on Thursday evenings, the park comes alive for the Concerts in the Park. They are free to attend and are a great way to enjoy some live music in a beautiful setting.

Also in Wyoming, Buffalo shares Cody's rich Old West history while being surrounded by more mountain views. The downtown in Buffalo is similarly lined with cute eateries and shops, creating a friendly atmosphere. Downtown Buffalo even has its own historic hotel, the Occidental Hotel.

Sheridan is another Wyoming town with a rich Old West history. Being a larger town than Cody, Sheridan has a busier downtown with a mix of historic buildings, shops, and cultural venues. In the heart of downtown, the WYO Theater hosts performances and movies and is a great spot to go on weekends. Throughout the year, Sheridan hosts community events such as the Sheridan WYO Rodeo, which adds to the vibrant community life.
