The Best Small Town In South Carolina For A 3-Day Weekend

South Carolina’s second-oldest city is also one of its prettiest. Known as the ‘Queen of the Sea Islands’, Beaufort is a historic town on Port Royal Island. It’s situated in South Carolina’s Lowcountry, where coastal wetlands, marshes, and islands meet the Atlantic Ocean. This diverse landscape, combined with the town’s old-fashioned southern charm, makes it an ideal weekend retreat. It’s easy to spend a few days wandering Beaufort’s walkable downtown and browsing the boutiques. Then head to the waterfront to watch the boats go by. Below we share some suggestions on what to do, where to shop, and where to stay so you can craft the perfect getaway and enjoy the best of what Beaufort has to offer.

Beaufort’s downtown area is part of a National Historic Landmark district listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The downtown core is only a few blocks long and leads into Beaufort’s more residential historic district. Here, you’ll see classic Carolina scenery, featuring grand antebellum and Federal- and Greek Revival-style mansions on wide streets lined with centuries-old oak trees draped in Spanish moss.

One of the most eye-catching historic landmarks downtown is the Beaufort Arsenal, framed by turreted castle-like walls. Constructed between 1795 and 1799, the arsenal was used by the Beaufort Volunteer Artillery, who fought in the Revolutionary War, and now houses the Beaufort History Museum. As you enter the property, look for two large brass trophy guns seized from the British in 1779.

After learning about Beaufort’s long history, you can pick up some literary memorabilia at McIntosh Book Shoppe, a locally owned bookstore in the Old Bay Marketplace. The store is a treasure trove of rare and out-of-print books with a focus on southern writers and South Carolina history.

You’ll find more local talent at Thibault’s Gallery, an art gallery and gift shop owned by local artist Mary Thibault. Pick up a painting as a souvenir of your trip, or browse their colorful collection of glassware, prints, photography, and stationery.

If you’re hungry after all that shopping, head for Southern Sweets, an old-fashioned ice-cream parlor and sandwich shop that’s been serving residents and visitors for over 20 years. If you’re in the mood for savory, try one of their freshly made homestyle sandwiches. If you’re craving something sweet, order a classic shake or one of the many tempting flavors of ice cream.

While Beaufort is considered a coastal community, there are no oceanfront beaches in town. It’s just a short drive to the Atlantic, however. Hunting Island State Park, located 17 miles east of Beaufort, is South Carolina’s most popular state park and attracts over a million visitors each year. The park contains five miles of sandy beaches, a nature center, and a historic lighthouse first built in 1859 and rebuilt in 1875 after it was destroyed during the Civil War. Several trails wind through the area, including walks to its saltwater lagoon, along the coastline, and through lush maritime forest.

The Anchorage 1770 in Beaufort’s waterfront district isn’t just a boutique hotel; it’s a piece of local history. This upscale inn is a historic 18th-century tabby house still in use. Tabby buildings were popular in southern coastal communities from the 1500s into the 1800s and were constructed from a mix of concrete, oyster shells, and sand. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the hotel was once the home of Beaufort Mayor William Elliot III. It was later converted into a luxury inn by its present owners, who have preserved many original features, including exposed timber ceilings, intricate mantels, and detailed plasterwork. Guest suites feature four-poster beds, large bay windows, and stunning water views.

The Rhett House Inn, in the heart of Beaufort’s historic district, is a centuries-old Greek Revival home converted into a charming bed and breakfast with easy access to downtown. The two-storey manor has wide wrap-around porches and a courtyard with a fountain. The Main House has ten guest suites, while seven Cottages offer more privacy to those wanting their own space.

Packed with beauty, southern charm, and memorable experiences, Beaufort is a one-of-a-kind destination whether you’re planning a weekend away with the family or a couple’s retreat.
