Northern California's Best Small Towns For A Weekend Escape

Northern California runs on microclimates so dramatic they feel like cheat codes for a weekend escape. In Mendocino, fog rolls in like a curtain and leaves the headlands smelling of salt and cypress; by afternoon, it can be sunny enough for a picnic above the cliffs. Cross into wine country, and the air turns warm and perfumed, then shifts again near Mount Shasta, where a dormant volcano dominates the horizon and small towns lean into basecamp life.

That constant change keeps travel here surprisingly light on planning: you can choose a main street to wander, a trail to follow, and a table to linger at, and the scenery does the rest. These towns deliver the best version of Northern California for a weekend escape.

This town is a great home base for a weekend excursion, as a wide range of hiking, kayaking, and sightseeing options surrounds it. If you're planning a visit, take a look at the Nicholson House, one of the best hotels in the town. When putting together an itinerary of natural areas to visit, don't leave Mendocino Headlands State Park. Here, you'll find trails overlooking the Pacific Ocean, unbeatable picnicking spots, and plenty of opportunities to see wildlife in their natural habitat.

A short drive north of town lies the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens, which visitors have labeled a "must-see" in this area of California's coast. Stroll through immaculately maintained gardens that will leave you inspired and refreshed. To learn a little more about the town and surrounding areas, visit Kelley House Museum and experience a local, little-known historical dive. And if you're on the hunt for some good eats, you might try out The Brickery, a highly-rated pizza joint, or Fog Eater Cafe, a delightful vegan/vegetarian restaurant offering a fusion of Southern cooking and regional flavors. On a final note, be sure to try out some of the town's wineries, as Mendocino County is one of California's largest and most diverse wine-growing regions.
