9 Best Ohio Towns For Retirees

Retirement in Ohio means picking a hometown that keeps you busy. Chagrin Falls sends its namesake waterfall straight through the middle of downtown. Dublin throws a three-day Irish festival with senior discounts every August. Vermilion sees more than 120 freight trains roll through on a typical day. Xenia built its walking and biking trails around an old Greek idea of welcoming strangers. Glendale skips the municipal income tax entirely. These nine towns earn their spots on culture and easy access alike. All nine keep the cost of living within reach.

Chagrin Falls stands out even on a list of the best places to retire in Ohio. It offers a blend of natural, retail, and community experiences that suit the retirement years well. Even with a population near 4,000, Chagrin Falls has a lively downtown, partly because the falls run through the middle of town. You can hear the Chagrin River rushing past from most corners of town. The Falls Viewing Area, set against brick storefronts and walkable streets, is the classic small-town scene. Riverside Park is another quiet outdoor option with green space along the river.

The town's appeal is not limited to its natural offerings. The Chagrin Falls Historical Society is a good resource for learning about the town's past. The town also has plenty of retail, and one store in particular stands out. The Chagrin Falls Popcorn Shop is a long-time Main Street favorite. Painted blue and red, the shop sits in an 1875 building and drew national attention after George W. Bush visited in 2004 during his re-election campaign.
